Are we getting bogged down in the process?: Dr Hassan Saeed

“The political process affects us all and can make a real difference to people’s lives. Politics should be about real things that matter to people. But do politicians and the public talk about the same things, even when both are focused on the issues?,” asks Dr Hassan Saeed in his latest comment piece for local newspaper Haveeru.

Dr Hassan, leader of the Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) and Special Advisor to President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan,  gives his opinion on the need to put political processes into a wider perspective.

“I say that when we are heading into a period when matters other than politics are likely to be at the forefront of ordinary citizens minds. I’m talking about the Euro Football Championship and of course Ramazan.

This natural break presents an opportunity for politicians to review how they operate.

Let me give an example of the different priorities for the public and politicians. I posed myself the question “What was the most important event in the Maldives last week”?

•    Was it progress on the Commission of Inquiry?
•    Was it the All Party Talks?
•    Was it the vote of confidence in the Majlis in the Speaker?
•    Was it MPs swapping parties?
•    Was it the drama on Usfasgandu?

No, it was the fatal stabbing of 16 year-old Mohamed Arham.”

  2. Hassan Saeed is talking about caring.

To truly care, we need to enter into the suffering of the most oppressed in a spirit of solidarity with them, we need to be strong enough to embrace the pain of others, to shoulder it, and we need to learn how to use that suffering as fuel for the struggle against injustice. It takes Divine assistance to do that, as noone is humanly strong enough to achieve such a feat, yet it is capable with Divine AID alone!

WE need to face up to the fear of suffering, the fear of being killed by gangsters, the fear of being alienated and sacked from our job, the fear of being tortured, the fear of death, the fear of being made homeless, impoversished by the powerbrokers whose interest it is to maintain gang warfare, the fear of being lied about, criminalized, rejected, made to grieve, the fear of - and this is the one where the criminals get us all the time... the fear of losing our family violently must be faced, and that is the one fear that the power brokers know gets the truly good ppl, they have used that one on me, YES, but I am so angry now, that I almost ready to tell you all the full, my full story... And you will see the level of evil which really controls these gangsters and murderers!

Yes, Saeed talks of caring, but we must truly seek Divine aid with an earnestness which will make our hearts literally HURT if we are ever going to have the strength to confront this tyranny!

But until one comes along who can face ALL of these above fears, one cannot talk of CARING FULLY, as in my opinion, TRUE CARING...is capacity for sacrifice, and that is the only thing which can touch, change lives, and truly inspire genuine spiritual sentiment!

I am not even nearly there yet, a few are, but not I... It is my desire to get to that level of character, but until I do, everything I have said myself about love and caring is just meaningless cheap trash, and I am sorry for it!

It is Friday Night, I am allowed to indulge in a little philosophical hog wash, just ignore it if you don't like it!

I am also learning this the hard way, so easy to talk about caring, but talk is so cheap. To truly care is something which we should
