Umar Naseer supporters call for Thasmeen’s resignation, outside DRP head office

Protesters allegedly in support of the opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) have gathered in front of the group’s head office calling on its leader, MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, to resign.

The protests, which took place this afternoon outside the group’s headquarters opposite the Artificial Beach, came as website ‘Dhivehi Post’ published an article calling on DRP supporters to gather near the building.

The website alleged that Thasmeen was offering “gifts” to his party’s disciplinary committee members to dismiss DRP deputy leader Umar Naseer from his position.

In September Naseer accused Thasmeen of attempting to dismiss him from the party, after the DRP council voted narrowly to recommend Umar to the disciplinary committee.

“I know that the disciplinary committee will decide to oust me from the party, that is very clear to me,’’ Naseer told press at the time, adding that the committee was “full of Thasmeen’s people who would do whatever he says”.

This afternoon, 30 protesters gathered near the DRP’s headquarters holding placards carrying messages in Dhivehi saying things such as “although Umar may be removed from his position he will be serving the nation and the people.”

Others signs being held outside the party HQ read, ”for the nation, religion and people, we call on Gayoom to be back in politics” and ”Primaries will be held to elect the party’s presidential candidate in 2012.”

Umar Naseer vowed to take legal action against “government officials and opposition figures who accepted bribes from (Indian infrastructure giant) GMR”, following allegations that surfaced on the Dhivehi Post website last week.

Thasmeen and Naseer were not responding to calls at time of press.

  1. Why do we see such stupidity from our political leaders..Umar naseer is a moron, is he trying to be more stupid than Sarah Palin?

  2. If manliness is required of a President under the constitution, not Thasmeen but Umar qualifies to run for President in the next elections. Meanwhile, Thasmeen can lead the Women's wing of DRP, and attend to more delicate matters such as flower arrangement, baking and embroidery. Thasmeen, you're a fragile blossom on the silky blue fabric that is DRP. Carress and cover the nakedness of our country in 2013.

  3. If I am Thasmeen, Umar Naseer would have been chucked out of DRP ages ago.

This article says there were 30 people protesting with Umar Naseer's support. Probably this includes a few who has Gayyoom's support too for some of the placards read, according to this article, "for the nation, religion and people, we call on Gayoom to be back in politics.”

Why can't DRP get rid of 30 people?

  4. This is very entertaining for us to watch from the sideline as the DRP haggles within trying to salvage itself...

Sharmeel is quite right that Thasmeen should switch to Womens Wing and Umar should just go back to submarine business. Yamyn should be in jail and Gayyoom should make a fool of himself and come back to a country which rejected him...his letter to Cameron was such a load of bullshit and as always was about "me me me me"..during his 30 yrs it was always about him!!

I say we all get our popcorns out and watch as DRPs destiny takes its own course....

  5. Ilham and Ali Waheed do not belong in the beauty pageant that is DRP's vice leadership.

A tenured professorship awaits Dr. Mavoter Shareef at Falaahu Nursery, Maafannu Campus.

  7. DRP thought it could find a shortcut to power by using loonies like Umar Naseer. DRP did lack young people with a voice, but it definitely did not need Umar Nasir's voice.

MDP worked hard for years and it's not going to be easy for DRP either. If DRP wants to be a challenge it needs to find people who are more stable up there and prepared for the long run too.

  8. Umar is a crony of Gayoom and could be making all this crap at the behest of his master. It seems that master gayoom is desperate to come back. Yamin too has played his part but strangely why is Qasim or his party has not issued any statement.
