Juvenile Court sentences 17 year-old boy to four months in prison for kissing girl

Additional reporting by JJ Robinson

The Juvenile Court has sentenced a 17 year-old boy to four months in prison after he kissed a 16 year-old girl in a court waiting room.

The girl was sentenced to four months house arrest.

The sentences were given after the boy was brought to court for a remand hearing in an ongoing drugs case, and kissed the girl who was in the waiting room. The pair were convicted for indecent behaviour and contempt of court for kissing on court premises.

“The boy was taken out of where those in custody are kept to the general waiting area, and walked right up to a girl standing there and kissed her in public. We found the girl to be 16 years of age,” a Juvenile Court official told Minivan News on condition of anonymity.

The official said although the girl involved in the matter had been sentenced to four months under house arrest, the court had ruled to delay implementation of the sentence for three years as this was her first offence. If the girl did not commit repeat offences of a similar nature in the next three years, the sentence against her would be annulled, the official said.

The four months would be added to the boy’ s drug sentence, the official added.

Harsh sentencing

Belying the country’s reputation as a luxury honeymoon destination, Maldivian courts issue harsh sentences for sexual offences.

In February 2013 a 15-year-old rape victim was sentenced to 100 lashes and eight months of house arrest, for a separate offence of fornication.

The girl had given birth to a baby in June 2012, which was discovered buried in the outdoor shower area of her home. Her stepfather was later charged with child sexual abuse, possession of pornographic materials and committing premeditated murder.

Following global outrage and a two-million strong petition threatening a tourism boycott by online activist group Avaaz.org, the girl’s sentence was overturned in the High Court on appeal.

Meanwhile in July 2013 the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) – the judiciary’s watchdog body – rejected the recommendation of its own subcommittee calling for the suspension of Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed.

Multiple leaked videos circulating on social media showed the judge fornicating with unidentified foreign women in a Colombo hotel room.

The JSC declined to suspend the judge, citing “lack of evidence”.

  1. It is heartening that this country is not yet a complete cesspit of vice and harlotry.

This is a wise judgement that serves to uphold our customs and values by severely punishing two individuals who knowingly and wantonly flouted them.

I thank our courts for their consistent and tireless efforts in upholding our moral norms and their uncompromisingly harsh attitude towards citizens who engage in sexually indecent behavior.

  2. Since this news appeared in Dhivehi, everyone has been expecting it to premier in Minivannews. This is a perfect story for Minivannews which does a good job of getting off beat stories out and make Maldivains look like Jamaicans in world press.

There is clearly a battle of lifestyles in Maldives. A western liberal camp VS a conservative camp. This is the diving line of Maldives politics too.

Hope proper context is given in such cases so people who does not know Maldives are not mislead.

Public kissing is frowned upon even in many liberal countries. In this case, it was kissing in Court!!.

This is a stand alone case and linking this story to the fornicating judge seems misleading.

    But others may disagree.

So where is the issue here?

  5. The brutally harsh nature of the law is designed to terrify the masses into a state of perpetual anxiety which renders them too afraid to create the sense of democratic accountability which normally works to reign in the unjust, cruel, sadistic, hedonistic excess of the tyrants.

What a paradox, the law only exists so that some can be above the law.

Minivannews or anybody else does not have to make Maldives look bad, your doing a good job of it all by yourself.

  7. The issue is with corrupt judges punishing citizens for crimes they also commit. Why are members of the supreme court allowed to fornicate with prostitutes on video tape and keep their job and not be punished? Linking this story to Hameed's sex tapes makes total sense because it shows the level of corruption and inconsistency with court sentencing in Maldives. Men in government can break any law they want while punishing the sheep for the same crimes.

    Ann? lifestyle battle? dhivehi hanguraama?

The story is absurd if true, and Maldivian courts are a joke.. No reason to make racist slurs about Jamaicans.

  11. What a great country for the chosen few. If you are a well connected corrupt lawmaker, or fortunate to be rich, the Maldives is the place to be. Among legal activities include:
    * Having sex with children
    * Having multiple sex partners whenever you want
    * Being homosexual with teenage partners
    * Enslaving wives and use them to get you younger sex partners
    * Dealing and using in hard drugs (cocaine & heroine)
    * Stealing and using government money
    * Prostitution
    * Gambling

The only condition which makes you in par with other good muslims is, NEVER miss prayers!....

Getting 4 months jail term for Dhivehi and not French kissing is hilarious.

Hey, the guy who makes Maakana show...this is the best time for you to start a series...to much good stuff is happening and housewives need entertainment as husbands are busy in politics and kids are glued on PS busy killing each online.

  12. Sure Jamaicans are good people. But there is a semantic point.

If one read stuff written by Brits one cannot avoid noticing the wholesale stereotyping. Perhaps as owners of the English language (which unfortunately has become the universal language, at the expense of the rest of the world due to internet), the natives of the English have an advantage - when they define words that becomes the standard and the rest of us follow. But if English is to be an universal language, everyone should be able to define and write Englsih their way. Why not?

Indians and Sri Lankans have realized this a long time ago and they have their own type of English - they are not be bothered by what the native English think..

The typical Brit/native English view of an islander is very likely a Jamaican stereotype ( pot smoking, voodoo practicing, rastfarian, unorganized, lazy people)

Is this not the picture of Maldivains society that get from reading the Minivan articles..? I think it is.

    just my view..

  13. A country where love is illegal, but prostitution is legal. What a miserable hell this place is. May global warming sink this cesspit into the depths of the ocean.

  14. I could not stop laughing after first reading this on haveeru. Well done to the young couple who did this in court. If the 100% muslim people can go abroad and fornicate with prostitutes, while women fall off buildings during sex, kissing is not a problem at all!

  15. I think it is a perfectly knitted article..

I am concerned about The boy: will end up in jail where he will complete his studies for drugs, theft or probably murder.. he is just 17, a small boy. what age does mischief happen in? Judge Hameed's age? when u can pay off for the f-*ks? The boy would have felt his whole world trembling down at the court,, maybe he wanted some comfort knowing that he is going "IN" for a long time..?? a comfort kiss, a good bye kiss,,,,? i do understand that the country is muslim..such actions (at least in public) arent encouraged even if it is a daily (nightly) occurrence specially in the capital city.

Pple like sheik shaheem who blam the quran for actions of his own would disagree.. pple like imran will call for immediate lashing under fornication..while he is allowed to fornicate with his sister in law..(captured on video). And finaly, pple like judge hameed will sit in the high posts, protected by the a corrupt system while they openly indulge in immature, 5minute sexual ordeals.

Maldives as a state is on the verge of making the most critical decision of its entire life time. It is the time we decide either we want to be like an extremist state or the west. History and past of each extremist state, iraq, iran, syria, pakistan, are of extremist majority where so far; a stable govt is non existant. Bombing, killing, mass murder, etc etc.it is time we choose the right decision.. for the sake of the many generations we wish to come for our children. do we knowingly throw our state into the hands of extremist ideas or we give a future to our generations?? the decision is weighing on which side we choose now. MDP or PPM.. I for one have seen enough repetition around the world.. I want development and stability and a balance in my country. I call you all to vote with your heart. Think about this well.b urself when u have the voting paper & pen in your hand. make the right choice.. EBBURUN ANNI for President. HABURUNVIYAS HEYO

  16. to follow ismalic principals, a country does not have to sky dive into extremism. religion a self right of each individual. and i mean no harm or disrespect to islam and its fundamentalism in above comment. But i have seen religion being sold in Maldives for petty cash.

I have seen Imran and Shaheem openly sell out the quran and the religion for party benefits, for money benefits...what more will you call this other than selling out on religion? in this maldives...

So i am calling for the rights of each person..to be able to live a life of their own in peace...for future and current generations..

PPM- those of you who will vote for PPM, are couching for cocaine and brown sugar business in Male...Seriously, who doesnt know the mass tax free business done by Yamin? and who doesnt know that this PPM is a monstrosity created by the then 30 year old dictator Maumoon abdull Gayyoom? I feel shame for the fellow Maldivians,,..knowing all and still campaigning for him... he can pay off his entire state to me and my reply to him wud be f-=k off. i will not sell my future or my kids future to a drugs smuggler.

for those of you who would like to ask me what proof i have of yamin.... i'd like to say:, i have enuf proof..
    - Do i want to say that in a court of law? Not yet...
    - Why wudnt you go as witness or proof?
    To protect my family
    To protect my friends
    To avoid confronting corrupt systems

  20. This is what Anni says, the Tourists will increase when the Maldivian are civilized. How many tourists will think twice on hearing this news whether to go on their next vacation to Maldives? I don’t think these monkeys will ever evolve. Is kissing that bad, I think spitting on the ground or scratching the crotch in public is common practice in Maldives which looks more ugly then kissing someone. How about if you kiss your kid in public, are you going to be punished? Too much fish….., bloody fishermen will never grow up.

These idiots go insane if they see a Maldivian women swimming in bikinis, or sipping a beer, if it was like eating from the garbage. Do you really think those women who wrap up like mummies, or those potbelly men eating like dogs licking the fingers and chewing nuts like grazing cows are beautiful scene.
And how about those MPS behaving like apes in the Majlis hole or the public who seems that there is nothing in their life other then spying on people and spreading rumors and engaging in politics. Grow up guys and be civilized in order to progress.
