Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Mohamed Musthafa today presented a resolution to the parliament demanding the investigation of Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his half-brother Abdulla Yameen, for allegedly buying subsidied oil from OPEC and selling it on the international blackmarket to Burma.
The previously-aired allegations date from Yameen’s time as Trade Minister and head of State Trading Organisation (STO). Yameen is now an MP and leader of the opposition-aligned People’s Alliance (PA) party, and has insisted that any such trading was legal and that allegations of impropriety were politically-motivated.
In the motion, Musthafa claimed that Chief National Correspondent of CNN-IBN Sumon Chakrabarti had outlined how the fraud was conducted to local media, and provided evidence.
His resolution requests an investigation into what it describes as “the biggest corruption case in the history of the Maldives”.
Issues relating to the Singapore-based joint venture that allegedly carried out the deal, Mocom Trading Pvt Ltd, which was used established to carry out this fraud, were first raised by audit firm KPMG, Musthafa noted in the resolution.
The resolution states that later in 2004, audit firm Price Water House Coopers also audited the STO.
“This year the government handed the auditing to [forensic accountancy firm] Grant Thornton which found that the two audit reports contained legitimate concerns in their reports,’’ the resolution said.
If passed, the resolution would oblige parliament to investigate the matter. It states that it is the legal duty of the parliament to look in to that matter as the allegations concern commercial crime as high-level corruption.
Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MP Ahmed Nihan said he fully supported such an investigation as it would “reveal the truth of it to the people.”
‘’There have been so many accusations against Gayoom and so far none of them have been proven,’’ Nihan said. ‘’This government has already spent US$2 million on bribing the journalist Chakrabarti and investigating the matter using other methods,” he alleged.
Nihan said Musthafa was “the black sheep” of the MDP Parliamentary Group, and accused the party of “often using him to present such resolutions and bills.”
‘’He always tell us outside the parliament that his policy is ‘no money, no talk,’’ he said. ‘’He must have been given some amount of money and if someone else gave more he will withdraw it, that is how he works.’’
Nihan said that similar allegations had been made by the current Home Minister Hassan Afeef that Gayoom took US $80 million dollars in tsunami aid given by the Qatari government.
‘’The court found Afeef guilty of defamation,’’ Nihan said. ‘’There are many such accusations against Gayoom.’’

Its all talk and no work as usual. This is nothing new. MDP has mastered the art of playing games. This time it is played by Mutapha. And i am sick and tired of these games.
If the present government can actually find any evidence of any wrongdoing of the past regime, I see no reason why they should be so quiet about it. They are quiet only because they cannot prove any of their accusations.
Once every now and then they will tak of corruption, bribery, human rights, torture, gang violence, drugs, etc, etc, to bury something bigger under such talks. This time it is perhaps to divert public attention from the tax bill and the ailing economy.
Because the government is incapable of holding anyone from the previous regime accountable for anything, they will tell us that they do not believe in taking revenge. This is a big game that they are playing and we are supposed to dance to their tunes.
The 800 million dollar story is leaked through Suman Chakraborti as if that will make the story more crdible. Yameen has told on TV that no one can prove that he was involved in illegal trading of oil with the Burmese. So guys, give it up. Relax and let everone else relax too. Your games do not work!
Coming from Mustapha or anybody, this has to be investigated. How Yaameen was able to be so rich from being a paid government employee has to be investigated!

When this kind of allegations are made by Musthafa, its such a big joke! I think that Musthafa is making a deal with Gasim and this is just a "holhi vaahaka" so that we would concentrate on this rather than what Musthafa actually is doing.
Musthafa is the most corrupted person and he would not look out of any one's back but his own. We know this from the way he spent the poor people who paid him to go to Haj and Umraa. He used all that money for his campaign and then left them to solve their own problem. Thank god for them that a certain person paid the amount so that these people could in the end make their trip to Mecca.
So Musthafa, pls shut your hole and go back to your island. I know you cant even pay your own electricity bill or water bill...god knows what you do with all your bribe money from DRP when you accidentally slip your finger and press the wrong button. Joke!
I am not saying Maumoon and Yameen is not corrupted, all i'm saying is Musthafa is not the person to talk about this.
Really we need to investigate the credible reports by KPMG. So many evidence were on the reports that Yameen abused his power during and after his term.

It's hard to work when the opposition have blocked everything that you do in parliament. You talk about games but what has the DRP been doing exactly for the last 2 years in parliament eh?

They talk of these things because these things need to be debated, all problems directly caused by Gayoom and Yameen in fact. How do you explain why most people in Maldives live below the poverty line when so much money has come into the country for decades? This government is on the right progressive track, although obviously there are a lot of problems with it too. However, soon the deficit will be wiped out, the country can begin to grow and the people can get what they deserve. Compare this to stealing and squandering from the people and ruining the lives of a whole generation of youth with heroine addiction. Which would you say is better?

The government is incapable of holding anyone accountable at present because Gayoom and his cronies still control the judiciary. How can they be brought to justice when they control it?
I think this is a good beginning. Yameen did this on his own without STO board's approval. But Gayoom was aware of this from the beginning.

I personally spoke to a few other MDP MP's about bringing justice, they said something to the effect of, Yes Brother, but we have to be forgiving and we do not want to be like the leaders of the past... I agree...
But making Yameen give back what he stole from you is not about not forgiving, it may help him to be a better person also. Sure, you can forgive him, like him. Yet he still has to be made to return what does not belong to him, (your Dignity which he stole from you Maldivians by intimidating you...
My perception of Yameen is that he likes the feeling of power his notorierty gives him. Whether the evil things that are said about him are true or not, a part of him likes people to believe it, I think, as weak minded ppl fear and respect him for his reputation for 'Nulafukan...' He exploits that, and he knows he is doing it, I have experienced it personally.
His attempts to deny his control of gangsterism are fairly half hearted.
One guy even said to me that he does not like Yameen, but that he believes Yameen is the only leader ruthless enough to be capable of bringing order back to the Maldives, so he supports Yameen.

Most lies that had been told about me, I have even admitted to doing such things to protect the reputation of the liars from being known as a liar, because, I HATE the attitude which attempts to repress the truth through force to present oneself as a moral person for selfish reasons.
