Police arrest 12 after white underpants hung outside Rasdhoo Magistrate Court

Police have arrested 12 persons on the island of Rasdhoo in Alif Alif Atoll late on Wednesday night, after a pair of large white underpants were hung outside the entrance to the island’s Magistrate Court.

According to a source on Rasdhoo, the white pair of underpants was hung on a rope strung across the street in front of the court offices at about 5:00pm on Wednesday, “barely three inches away from the entrance, but nevertheless not in the court’s premises itself”.

The white pants are a reference to recently-leaked videos of Supreme Court (SC) judge Ali Hameed apparently fornicating with unidentified foreign women in a Colombo hotel room, and have become a symbol of protests against the Supreme Court’s suspension of Saturday’s highly anticipated presidential election.

“Police from the Rasdhoo station started work to remove the underpants at around 7:00pm, prompting a immediate gathering of over a hundred people near the police office,” a source from the island told Minivan News on condition of anonymity.

He said that the gathered people shouted at the police for removing the underpants: “Is the underwear the only illegal thing you could find on the street?” shouted some.

“You can remove the underpants from this island’s court, but you do nothing about the ones sitting on the Supreme Court bench,” called others.

Eyewitnesses said the police resorted to the use of pepper spray and physical force to disperse the crowd.

Another pair of underpants was again hung in front of the Magistrate Court later the night.

Locals say that a back-up police team – nearly 30 officers in full riot gear – came to the island around midnight to remove the new pair of underpants.

Although no more confrontations occurred, 12 persons are now in police custody in Rasdhoo police station.

“Just after midnight, police summoned the magistrate himself and made him sign arrest warrants. First they arrested six people. They then spoke to a group of people from the island who are working with the PPM [Progressive Party of Maldives], and got their help to identify some of the most active MDP [Maldivian Democratic Party] campaigners, and arrested them too. That isn’t a new tactic for them anyway,” the source alleged.

Police Media Official Chief Inspector Hassan Haneef was not responding to calls at the time of press.

Protesting with underpants

MDP members have begun using underpants in various rallies and protests following the Supreme Court’s ordering the Elections Commission to halt preparations for the presidential election run-offs, which were initially scheduled for this coming Saturday (September 28).

A pair of white underpants hung at the Raalhugandu area – the party’s rally grounds – has the words “Judiciary ‘happy, happy’. Where are the citizens’ rights?”, referring to phrases from the video clips allegedly showing Ali Hameed fornicating with multiple foreign women.

At Wednesday night’s rally, a cake decorated to look like a person wearing white underpants was also seen at the rally grounds, sporting the words “Happy Birthday, Fandiyaaru (Judge) Ali Hameed”.

During the first protests after the court issued the order on September 23, a group of protesters were observed hanging a large pair of white underpants on a police barricade placed across Chandhanee Magu in capital city Male’.

While the protests against the Supreme Court on September 23 prior to the issuance of the order showed people holding posters of still shots from the leaked videos, on Tuesday protesters carried cartoons depicting scenes from the film.

The placards and posters expressed the lack of respect the protesters have for the courts due to “disgraced judges accused of indecent behaviour and fornication sitting on the bench.”

Cartoons, images, and caricatures of Judge Ali Hameed and the white underpants are spreading around social media. One such image shows a Maldivian flag with a white pair of underpants replacing the white crescent in the centre.

  1. Shout as much as you want. We shall rule . Police and Army are with Maumoon and next it will be Maumoon himself who shall file the case after Jameels case is near completion. Ha ha. Our puppet Waheed will keep telling International community to mind their own business and we shall rule.

  5. Was it the supreme court judge Ali Hameed's white underpants?
That might explain the police action, after all you can't hang a supreme court judges underwear in public like that, the dude still needs it for his next appearance in upcoming porn shoots.

  6. Arrest who ever is complaining, protesting or even mentioning the gang bang! All their pleas are not only irrelevant but MUST be illegitimate! Never ever dare do anything to the fat ass trying to trace the Constitution!
Ali Hameed could have never done it!
But the red headed guy with the pumped up tummy, a fat ass is surely one hell of a lookalike! Hameed's wife would not be able tell who is who!

  7. Guys there is no other way; if you want get rid of this police and the ape like judges just vote for Anni to elect him with the consent of majority people. This only will give the pathway to establish a just judiciary and civil police force.
This is going back to 30 years dictatorship, if ordinary citizen hang underpants he is arrested but people whom these police give an immunity umbrella, even they sodomize, rape, fornicate they are free to roam around with their dicks to rape sodomize, fornicate and god knows what these dirty minded apes do . Guys Ladheene is 100% better because Ladheene guy will have clear mind and will not be busy in implementing God’s code of conduct or spying on people to see whether they follow divine moral guide. It is more likely that under Anni you may see some hardship for the so called officials who are seasoned to engage in personalized political game. But we as ordinary people will have some rooms to breathe without fear. Therefore why you should vote to protect the gang whose business would be to put moral police behind your back and find ways to keep ordinary people suppressed so these monkey can roam freely.

Do you guys really know why the gang against Anni is so adamant to make sure he does not come to power, it is because they believe that Anni has a mentality of ordinary people. If you doubt just listen to that bipolar Judge Ablho Saeed’s audio conversation, the guy believes Anni is like an ordinary person who is not fit to occupy the president’s palace. We have to break this mentality of hierarchy in society that discriminate ordinary people and officials. One thing that guy forgets that what kind of supremacy he has to occupy in the CS bench; a mentally retard who is a descendent of ancient Sri lankan Vedda family.

  10. I like the flag; very symbolic. We should also issue commemorative stamps, which I'm sure will quickly become the envy of every philatelist.

Well, why stop there? New currency notes with Ali Hameed's face on one side and Jangiyaa on the other side will do nicely too. He'll probably go down in history as one of our biggest exports; i.e. the Ron Jeremy of Maldives!

There's little anyone can write as you summed up everything in plain simple words. FACTS!

..we Maldivians tend to forget, assume and take for granted and therefore I encourage people to keep reminding each other of the real facts that have messed up the country.

JUST A REMINDER NOT TO FORGET....
    a) The 30 year regime killed innocent young active kids for speaking the truth. The culprits still walk free
    b) A young teenager caught with a 'joint'(cigarette mixed with drugs) gets five years jail term, while the main dealer and importer arrested with kilos of harsh oil and black money..walks free
    c) An underage girl gets pregnant after continuous sexual abuse by her step father with the help of her own mother. Pregnancy gets terminated the girl gets harsh sentence with 100 lashes. The man and woman walk free.
    d) Arthur brothers imported drugs into Maldives, used Maldives to clean their dirty money. Publicly supporting top government officials and even attend functions with the head of state. When the truth comes up, the government denies and let them leave free
    e) Parents entrust religious teachers /scholars to educate their children about the good of Islam..little did we know one of the called scholar sexually abused these young girls during religious classes in a religious institution. The scholar walks free and allowed to teach
    f) Nasimso fingered over thirty two kids (girls) in a public school. He gets a two year jail term, but comes out on parole and gets a better government job..and has so many jogging friends. Leads a normal life as if nothing happened
    g) Every night uncles, brothers, cousins, even fathers sneak into the girls room (in the same house) and get the satisfaction of a blow job or penetrative sex. ABUSE under our roof, many have been identified but they walk free and we share food with them
    h) Convicted murderers, rapists, pedophiles...caught red handed never see the horrows of jail, but are set free because of lack of evidence
    i) Supreme court judge with his sexual series shot in Colombo with prostitutes still seats on the bench and decides the fate of 350,000 Maldivians. A presidential candidate thinks the tape is fake...
    j) Religion being used to control women and confuse the young. Sex sex sex is the only thing in their minds. Extremists and extremism seems to be accepted
    k) Day light coup, and now knowing Nasheed WILL win elections, they are scared to death because they know this time harsh revenge is round the corner. Everything now has become personal...

People people, do you really need to be reminded of the truth about our daily lives??? I say it is time to say NO to all this nonsense, get elections backs, Nasheed wins, restructure judiciary system and get the coup leaders under the hammer one way or another!

  13. Ann: Yes, but MDP aren't the ones who want to punish people for Haraam activities we are ALL guilty of.

Most MDP have been tortured in prison, or bashed on the street, or bashed by the police, so they have been punished ten times over for their evils.

Yet will the Judges ever be punished?

You see, it is about EQUALITY before the law.

Many in MDP do not care that the Judge did all that for its own sake. It's because the Judge commits ZINA, and gets away with it - then has the audacity to flog others for it.

If the judges committed Zina but did not flog others for it, many who now care would not care that he committed Zina, its between him, his Family and Allah.

The issue is about equality before the law, and something more. It is also about the inevitably hypocritical nature of such strict law, and the inevitability of such laws being used to create a massive power imbalance of an unjust nature.

Could somebody please work out what I am trying to say and express it clearly. I am too frustrated as to why it not obvious to articulate my point coherently.

  14. Ann, we have not forgotten anything. The reference you have given are all individual at their home doing whatever to themselves. None of them has the power to judge us and sentence us. Despite that most of them slowly disappeared from the public.

The public outcry in this case is the person involved is a Supreme Court Judge, who sentences people for the same thing he is seen to be doing. For anyone who knows him, the videos leave no doubt to who the person is. This same person is sitting on the bench of the apex court of Maldives and signed a Court Order which affects each and every one of us.

So it is not that we forgot about the "Angelica Sharon" episodes. The priorities of the two are very different.

  17. The crescent in the Maldivian flag replaced by a pair of under wear is not a laughing matter. It is an act of crime. It is not one's freedom to modify a sovereign nation's national flag that symbolises the courage, dignity and the nation's traditions and values. It is rather a matter to be considered seriously. Maldives is a sovereign state and the crescent symbolises the Islamic faith which held the society together for all this time. It is not only when attacked by machine guns and suicide bombing that a nation's national security is under threat.

  18. No - a nation’s national security is also under threat when the Supreme Court thinks he is over the constitution and keeps issuing orders to military & police.
