Government offices, schools and most private offices are to be closed on Thursday to celebrate greater Eid: Eid al Adha, with the Maldives joining other Muslims all over the world to honour the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son to show his obedience to God.
Male’ City Council has announced that 15 mosques in Male’ including Hulhumale’ and Villingili will conduct the Eid prayer on Friday morning. The Eid prayer is a special prayer which requires reciting the Takbeer, and delivering of two sermons – one before the prayer and one after.
The Eid al-Adha prayer is performed any time after the sun completely rises up to just before the entering of Zuhr time, on the 10th of the Dhul Hijjah month.
In Islamic tradition, it is highly encouraged to wear the best dress possible when attending the Eid prayer, and the streets of Male’ are full of people shopping to buy new dresses to wear for the Eid prayer.
Unlike many of the islands far from Male’, few activities will be held in the capital other than TV programmes, as many people take advantage of the public holiday and depart the city.
However, the outer islands celebrate Eid the way it was celebrated by Maldivians ages ago. Cultural dances, local Boduberu, Maali and Vedhuma Dhiun are some of the activities that most of the islands will never miss.
The Transport Authority has decided that Male’ will be a traffic free zone between 4:00pm and 10:00pm on Eid ul-Adha to make it more comfortable for families going out.
The Male’ west harbour area is left with few little boats as the fishing vessels have shortened their trips to make sail to their to their own islands – as they always do during Eid, so that they can take part in the cultural and religious festivities that will be held on the local islands.
The Eid Al Adha is a major religious festival for it is related to the Hajj pilgrimage, the holy Zam Zam Well and the ‘Kaaba’. According to the Quran, Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail laid the foundation of the ‘Kaaba’ the ‘Cube or the ‘Primordial House’.
The story of Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismail
The story of how Ibrahim acted when he was asked to sacrifice his only son at the time Ismail is mentioned as follows:
“O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!” So We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance. And when (his son) was old enough to walk and work with him, (Ibrahim) said: O my dear son, I see in vision that I offer you in sacrifice: Now see what is your view!” (The son) said: “O my father! Do what you are commanded; if Allah wills, you will find me one practising patience and steadfastness!” So when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead, We called out to him saying: O Ibraheem! You have indeed fulfilled the vision; surely thus do We reward those who do good. Most surely this was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice. And We perpetuated (praise) to him among the later generations. “Peace and salutation to Ibrahim!” Thus indeed do We reward those who do right. Surely he was one of Our believing servants.
As Ibrahim was preparing for his return journey back to Canaan, leaving his wife Hajar and little Ismail in the middle of a dry, rocky and uninhabited area, which is now Saudi Arabia, Hajar asked him, “Did Allah (God) order you to leave us here? Or are you leaving us here to die.” Ibrahim turned around to face his wife. He was so sad that he couldn’t say anything. He pointed to the sky showing that God commanded him to do so. Hajar then said, “Then Allah will not waste us; you can go”.
Ibrahim left a large quantity of food and water with Hajar and Ishmael, but the food quickly ran out, and after a few days the two began to feel the pangs of hunger and dehydration.
Hajar ran up and down between two hills called Al-Safa and Al-Marwah seven times, in her desperate quest for water. Exhausted, she finally collapsed beside her baby Ishmael and prayed to God for deliverance. A spring of water gushed forth from the earth at the feet of baby Ishmael. Other accounts have the angel Gabriel (Jibrail) striking the earth and causing the spring to flow in abundance. With this secure water supply, known as the Zam Zam Well, they were not only able to provide for their own needs, but were also able to trade water with passing nomads for food and supplies.
Years later, Ibrahim was instructed by God to return from Canaan to build a place of worship adjacent to Hagar’s well (the Zam Zam Well). Ibrahim and Ishmael constructed a stone and mortar structure —known as the Kaaba— which was to be the gathering place for all who wished to strengthen their faith in God. As the years passed, Ishmael was blessed with Prophethood and gave the nomads of the desert his message of submission to God. After many centuries, Mecca became a thriving desert city and a major center for trade, thanks to its reliable water source, the well of Zamzam.
One of the main trials of Ibrahim’s life was to face the command of God to devote his dearest possession, his only son. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to God’s will. During this preparation, Satan tempted Ibrahim and his family by trying to dissuade them from carrying out God’s commandment, and Ibrahim drove Satan away by throwing pebbles at him. In commemoration of their rejection of Satan, stones are thrown at symbolic pillars signifying Satan during the Hajj rites.

We are new Muslims of 21st Century; we believe Prophet has shown us a human life of his time, have a life of maximum of what he most enjoyed and die for a cause. This is we have learned from his personality. We don’t repeat what he has done in his time, we have leaned the psychology behind of his actions. Spilling the blood of poor old goats all over Male is, let's say, a bit "primitive" to say the least. This is the sort of thing you'd expect from "lesser" religions and not from Islam, the greatest-of-them-all.
The whole Hajj/Eid business now looks like a pure pagan ritual. Nothing wrong with that per se, as long as it brings disparate tribes together, which presumably was the original purpose of this. Don't get confused by all that crap about pleasing Allah. He doesn't really care about this sort of non-sense. As long as we think, it benefits us, then that's what counts.
And the Hajj Khuthba validates this point. The main theme was that of Muslims coming together and sorting out their differences. If a good old pagan ritual will help in that regard, then who cares.
Naya, you are what I would call a cherry picking muslim. You don't like certain aspects of Islam and are ashamed of bits and pieces, so you delude yourself by picking the sweet and nice bits with sprinkles on top.

Allah (Exalted be He) says at the end of Surah Al-Nur: And let those who oppose the Messenger’s (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah - legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them. This is a stern warning against one who turns away from his command (peace be upon him) and follows his own desires and whims.

The problem with Islam -
1. Its a highly politicized agenda in the name of Religion. Its not a spiritual thought. Its a code of conduct, it talks about geography, races, politics, War, conflicts, killing etc. I wonder, why God cant stay away from profane and mundane affairs of humans.
2. Its basically based on "Fear" and "Shame" and negativity of life and sexual and other banal rewards in after-life. What kind of God runs a Torture camp in the name of Hell, and runs a brothel in the name of rewards?
3. its highly aggressive and offensive religion for not only to non-muslims but even to muslims. In certain conditions, it ask you to kill and conquer. Now what kind of God order people to kill each other for whatever reason.
4. Its all about complete and blind submission in a certain violent dogma and set of theories with no questions asked. Now, what spirituality asks you to take your reasoning and brains out of equation?
5. Its medieval ( like other Abrahamic religions), primitive and highly Arabian in nature. Wonder, why do all muslims have Arabic names, even if they come from different geographies or races?
6. Its huge mass of highly uneducated and illiterate people. Now i often hear, its fastest growing religion in the world. Well, most of the world are not literate & aware minds. Most of the people are looking for some kind of simple faith, or reason to be. It provides an easy way out in the name of a narcissistic version of divine. Discard your brains, Your humanity and just believe in a cult of death, where every good thing comes after death.
7. Its mutually exclusive with every other faith. If you are a non-jew, you can still can be dear to God and can go to paradise. If you are not a christian, still you are not beyond the shadow of God. But as per islam, If you are a non-muslim, you are doomed. in practical world, you are a second-class citizen.
8. Its highly insecure. Where anyone can go to a christian church or a Buddhist Temple, a non-muslim is not allowed inside a mosque or in Mecca. They want to build mosques all over the world and want to immigrate to non-muslim societies, but if a non-muslim want to build a place of worship in Mecca or any other Islamic Holy place, its not allowed. A muslim man can and encouraged to marry a non-muslim woman but reverse is not allowed. Non-muslims in a Muslim society are a constant target of proselytizing and coercion and also of threat of life, kidnapping and torture and finally forced conversion. If you leave islam, you are to be killed. If you have some different opinion about Islam or its messenger, you are to be killed. Every answer to an intellectual or spiritual disagreement is Murder.
9. It believes in numbers. If they have more Goats than you so they are right. That's why such an astronomical rate of re-production and so much stress on numbers. Thats a typical Arbian, tribal mentality. Doesn't matter if most them are illiterate baboons.
In a way, its a violent political agenda, more like ultra-fascism with a mandate from an Arabian God. there is something very sinister about islam.

I remember when a muslim cleric declared that earthquakes were a result of women showing off their cleavage. This angered women who then proceeded to dress up in clothes which did show a lot of cleavage and they all got together to see if any earthquakes would happen. Nothing happened though. Opposing and Making fun of the Sunnah or other aspects of the Sunnah makes a person a kaafir.In this case he is opposing the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and making fun of his Sunnah, and the one who makes fun of the Sunnah and knowingly mocks things that are proven to be part of the Sunnah is not a Muslim.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say: ‘Was it at Allaah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were mocking?’Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed”[al-Tawbah 9:65-66]
If a person is called to observe one of the rulings of Islam and says that piety is in the heart but he does not follow the shar’i ruling, he is an evil liar. For faith includes both words and deeds, it is not simply the matter of what is in the heart.

The enmity of the kuffaar – the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), mushrikeen (polytheists) and hypocrites – towards the believers will last until the Hour begins. The conflict between truth and falsehood will continue until Allaah inherits the earth and whomsoever is upon it. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion (Islamic Monotheism) if they can. And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will be the dwellers of the Fire. They will abide therein forever”[al-Baqarah 2:217]
Because Islam rules the believers with justice, and gives each person his rights, and they do not want this to happen – for this reason they strive to wage war against this religion and to refute the truth with falsehood. But they can never achieve that, for this religion will abide, and Allaah will perfect His light, even though the kaafiroon hate that. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“They intend to put out the Light of Allaah (i.e. the religion of Islam, this Qur’aan, and Prophet Muhammad) with their mouths. But Allaah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate (it).
He it is Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islamic Monotheism) to make it victorious over all (other) religions even though the Mushrikoon (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah and in His Messenger Muhammad) hate (it)”[al-Saff :8-9]
The kuffaar want all the nations of this earth to follow kufr as one:
“They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (Faith), and thus that you all become equal (like one another)
[al-Nisaa’ 4:89 – interpretation of the meaning]
Those who disbelieve spend of their wealth in order to prevent others from following the path of Allaah, at all times and in all places, and (they strive to) spread corruption, provoke wars and kill the believers. But Allaah insists that they should fail and that His religion should be victorious. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (men) from the path of Allaah, and so will they continue to spend it; but in the end it will become an anguish for them. Then they will be overcome. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto Hell”
[al-Anfaal 8:36]
Allaah has told us how strong the enmity of the kuffaar is towards the Muslims:
“Neither those who disbelieve among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) nor Al-Mushrikoon (the idolaters, polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah, pagans) like that there should be sent down unto you any good from your Lord. But Allaah chooses for His Mercy whom He wills. And Allaah is the Owner of Great Bounty”
[al-Baqarah 2:105 – interpretation of the meaning]
No matter what the kuffaar do, their enmity will not end. Even though they may speak words of friendship, their hearts are filled with hatred towards Islam and its people:
“How (can there be such a covenant with them) that when you are overpowered by them, they regard not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant with you? With (good words from) their mouths they please you, but their hearts are averse to you, and most of them are Faasiqoon (rebellious, disobedient to Allaah)”
[al-Tawbah 9:8 – interpretation of the meaning]
The hypocrites are kuffaar among the Muslims, whose hatred appears in their words and whose hearts are filled with enmity. But Allaah is watching them, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“If a good befalls you, it grieves them, but if some evil overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious), not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allaah surrounds all that they do”[Aal ‘Imraan 3:120]
The People of the Book disbelieve in the verses of Allaah, and mix truth with falsehood. They conceal the truth and plot against Islam, in order to divert the Muslims from their religion, as Allaah tells us about them (interpretation of the meaning):
“O people of the Scripture! (Jews and Christians): Why do you disbelieve in the Ayaat of Allaah, [the Verses about Prophet Muhammad present in the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] while you (yourselves) bear witness (to their truth)?
O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Why do you mix truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know?
And a party of the people of the Scripture say: ‘Believe in the morning in that which is revealed to the believers (Muslims), and reject it at the end of the day, so that they may turn back’”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:70-72]
Allaah has clearly stated that obeying the kuffaar in any way is the cause of destruction and loss, and that obeying Him is the way to glory, victory and strength, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will send you back on your heels, and you will turn back (from Faith) as losers.
Nay, Allaah is your Mawlaa (Patron, Lord, Helper, Protector), and He is the Best of helpers” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:149]
All of the kuffaar, be they the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), mushrikeen (polytheists) or hypocrites, are the enemies of the Muslims, so it is not permissible to depend upon them or to rely on them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And incline not toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you, and you have no protectors other than Allaah, nor you would then be helped”[Hood 11:113]
Allaah has warned us against taking the kuffaar as friends instead of the believers. If the Muslims fear their evil, it is permitted to make an outward show of friendliness towards them, even though he should hate them inwardly, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Let not the believers take the disbelievers as Awliyaa’ (supporters, helpers) instead of the believers, and whoever does that, will never be helped by Allaah in any way, except if you indeed fear a danger from them. And Allaah warns you against Himself (His punishment), and to Allaah is the final return”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:28]
Allaah has warned us against taking the Jews and Christians as friends, and He told us that whoever takes them as friends is one of them. He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Awliyaa’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Awliyaa’ of each other. And if any amongst you takes them (as Awliyaa’), then surely, he is one of them. Verily, Allaah guides not those people who are the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers and unjust)” [al-Maa'idah 5:51]
All of the kuffaar, be they the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), mushrikeen (polytheists) or hypocrites, will be in Hell on the Day of Resurrection, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islam, the Qur’aan and Prophet Muhammad) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al‑Mushrikoon will abide in the fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures”[al-Bayyinah 98:6]
The kuffaar and the Jews are the greediest of mankind for life, because they know that they have no share in the Hereafter. They hate death because they fear what comes after it, as Allaah tells us about the Jews and mushrikeen (interpretation of the meaning):
“And verily, you will find them (the Jews) the greediest of mankind for life and (even greedier) than those who ascribe partners to Allaah (and do not believe in Resurrection — Magians, pagans, and idolaters). Everyone of them wishes that he could be given a life of a thousand years. But the grant of such life will not save him even a little from (due) punishment. This is precisely what I was talking about in my earlier post. There is no doubt that the principle of Hajj is about gathering disparate tribes together, for a common purpose. The One God and the rituals are just superfluous side shows. The act of Hajj neither demonstrates nor refutes the idea of a One God, whatever that may be.
A lof of anti-Islamic commentators here need to take a chill pill. Islam, after all, is no better, nor worse than any other man made religion. The person who posted about Islam being a violent political movement has forgotten that the other two Abrahamic religions are pretty much the same and all of them have caused untold suffering on the human population throughout the centuries. Violence and intolerance is not restricted to Abrahamic religions either. Hindus and Buddhists, Sikhs, Shintos etc have inflicted similar atrocities on fellow humans. Are we forgetting about the massacres of millions of people by the Japanese during and before World War II? How about Nazi Germany and its treatment of the Jewish people? History is littered with horror upon horror of human suffering.
What's the common theme here? Surely, it's not a particular religion per se, but our own human failings that are to blame.

The argument of Moshaib was about the God's will rather than the human's in making the world a place of peace rather than horror. God claims he wields all powers such that he has control of everything, and nothing happens or will happen without his will. Then who is responsible for all the evils taking place.
