An 11 year-old girl who on Thursday prematurely gave birth to a child is said to be in a stable condition, as police today confirmed investigations were now under way into the case.
The girl, who cannot be identified due to her age, gave birth to the child two months prematurely. The child died early morning on Friday (November 2), after being taken to Feydhoo regional hospital in Seenu Atoll for further treatment, local media has reported.
The Maldives Police Service confirmed investigations into the matter were taking place, but said further details could not be disclosed due to the age of the child and the risk she could be identified and face possible recrimination.
A police spokesperson was unable to confirm the nature of the investigation at present.
However, local newspaper Haveeru, citing what it called reliable sources, reported that the girl had allegedly been a frequent victim of sexual assault before becoming pregnant.
“She came here with her mother complaining of constipation and stomach pain. Doctors had examined her and given an injection. But when she started to complain of severe pain, upon further examination doctors found that she was pregnant. The girl admitted that she got pregnant after someone had sexually molested her,” Haveeru quoted a local health centre official as saying.
The Health Ministry has meanwhile forwarded further requests for information on the case to the Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights, which is mandated to deal with the matter.
Gender Minister Dhiyana Saeed was not responding to calls from Minivan News at the time of press.
Abuse statistics
Almost one in seven children of secondary school age in the Maldives have been sexually abused at some time in their lives, according to an unpublished 2009 study on violence against minors.
Rates of sexual abuse for girls are almost twice as high than for boys at 20 percent – one in five girls have been sexually abused – while the figure for boys was 11 percent. Girls are particularly at risk in the capital Male’, the report found.
In recent years, local authorities and NGOs have released a number of findings trying to detail the extent of child abuse and wider sexual assaults within society.
The state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital’s (IGMH’s) Family Protection Unit reported in 2010 that the centre was notified of 42 cases of rape between 2005-2010. Most of these cases were found to involve minors.
According to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, 13 rape cases were reported last year alone, the majority of which most were gang rapes or assaults involving minors.

Before everyone goes all sympathaetic for the girl, we do not know if this was rape or zinaa. If it was rape then perpetrator must be punished by ruling of the Sharia...but if it was ziney, sharia has ruling too for both fornicators to be punished. We cannot let her off punishment just for being young ...sin is sin, and it doesn't matter of u r 18, 21, or 11. If you done crime you must be punished.

How about do a research to find out about the status on Maldivian mental health. I bet 98.5% are psychopaths. I have not met a single Maldivian whose brain functions as a normal civilized human being. One of the fathers of high court judge has abused his grand children and the case never was public.

According to them the girls start to experience their sexual desire from the age of 6 and once the child has this desire it is fundamentally ok to have sex with them, this is a sick society. In my country (Israel) we consider the age of consent by the word of god. so a child is no more a child around the age of 9 (women). its all biological. This artificial system of classifying minors by a certain numerical number such as 17 or 18 is illogical and unreasonable.
Thats why we sometimes arrest 12 years young Palestinian boys for throwing stones.
We are very rational people, we call a spade a spade. so this rationale of classifying women as young children despite their active sex life is very damaging to the moral fabric of the society.

Does anyone know that in Maldivian, mothers don’t trust their husbands and never let them approach their child girls when they are 6 years old. The season behind is, Maldivian do not have conscience that control their natural animal instinct. Even Fathers do not interact with their girl babies because this is considered as sexual approach. If any father keeps a better nearness to his girl, he could be suspected of his intention. This all proves that the culture itself is based on child abuse even within the family.
Does this mean that when this girl turns 18 she will be flogged?

She's a victim in every sense:
1) either she was a neglected child, took drugs and got together with the wrong people who convinced her to have sex
2) or she was the victim of rape without drugs involved, and shy to tell
3) she had a boyfriend and experimented without having had sex education, now covering it up with being "sexually molested".
The problem in our country is that the Mullahs are sexualizing our children by putting a veil on them. It indicates "this child may tempt men - let's cover her up". All bullshit. Then they're encouraging to get more and more children with less time to care for them, so many get lost on the streets. Oh and sex education is taboo - so what should they do? How would they know how fast it happens?
If this girl had a good relationship to her mother/guardian, she could have told her what happened and there would have been means to make sure a pregnancy will not take place. Now this poor girl had to go through a 7 months pregnancy with her baby finally dead.

Having heard the voice from different corners of Maldives in the recent past, obviously Mr. Riyaz would suspect this as an act by MDP which need to be referred to Vilingili court. If any suspect is to be photographed make sure he wears a yellow T shirt. And this pregnancy is ground enough for MDP's suspension from the upcoming election.
