Video: Lion tries to eat baby through glass

The family of this adorable one-year-old were probably thanking their lucky stars for the safety glass that stopped him from becoming a lion’s dinner.

The clip showing a determined lioness clawing at a thick glass window in a zoo has been doing the rounds on the Web.

Fearless baby Jack doesn’t look at all fazed by the animal’s attempt to take a swipe at him as he calmly sits outside the lion enclosure in Portland, Oregon.

While African lioness Kya is seen trying to take a bite out of the baby’s head, the boy’s mother is heard giggling, encouraging Jack to say: "Hi kitty, kitty.”

Oregon Zoo director Kim Smith told KPTV that lions often interact with young visitors to the zoo through the glass.

Ms Smith said: “She's using a typical prey behavior.”

It could be that the beast mistook the black-and-white hooded baby for a zebra foal.

The funniest thing I've ever seen was a bunch of chavs at Chessington years ago making fun of a male gorilla. It charged towards them, grabbed hold of the bars of its enclosure and proceeded to urinate all over them. It was like watching them being hosed down by the fire brigade, LOL.

Der - not sure that lions 'often interact with young visitors at zoo' - just wana EAT em!

Poor kid, probably terrified of animals from now on. What kind of parent would put their kid through that.

The parents should be throw into the lion's den, that would be funny

"We're off to the zoo today darling, would you like to dress as a Zebra and sit in front of the Lion enclosure?"

I agree with Avril. I also believe they should not be in cages or pens....them run free in their own enviroment.

Why not move the baby away from the glass, and not tease the lion, people love to tease animals, so annoying.

        Agree completely...poor lion.
      • jamesh 10 days ago
Or remove the glass and the toddler leaving the adults and see what the lion thinks of being made a burk by them

        couldnt agree more.

I think encouraging a baby to just sit there and say "Hi, kitty" when a lion is trying to attack it is not evolutionary wise.

Really stupid parents. The child could have ended up terrified. Would they still have laughed if their child had started screaming.
      • Raquel 10 days ago
Tressy, it is survival of the fittest. The lion is clearly hunting their child and rather than move it even a little they torture the animal. Hopefully they never go on a safari.

Don't worry, Darwin had a thing or two to say about that.

find this quite disturbing tbh, even if it is toughened safety glass, the thought of putting a child there for amusement in my book is a little twisted

Thank goodness the glass didn't break - the lion could have been badly cut!

Don't believe in taunting animals in captivity, disgraceful.

Poor lion! What sort of people would leave their child there for their filming entertainment. Feel sorry for both the child and the lion.

I am I the only one a little disturbed by this.... Sure there was safety glass there but encouraging the child to look around at a lion wanting to attack?? Seems a little wrong to me.

somehow this clip leaves me feeling very very very very uneasy,
I cannot explain it but the parents idea of humour is ........cant find the words to express myself....it all seem wrong, definitely not funny for me.
      mmmmmm
      what do you think???

      Never play with wild animals
Don't really find this funny, the animal shouldn't have been locked up in the first place
More importantly the irresposibilty of the parents that find it so funny, No doubt they would have sued it the glass broke
    • AVL  •  8 days ago
OK, Ms Smith, but that lioness looks friendly, it uses its mouth to catch things too, not just for eating, and it is not so stupid, 'It could be that the beast mistook the black-and-white hooded baby for a zebra foal' ...maybe you, Ms Smiths, could make such a mistake. Stop f***in' up beasts!

Very silly on the people in charge of the child, Murphys law, if something can happen it will sooner or later. It is wrong to torment a lion like that.

jesus christ that lioness had her jaws open so wide.trying to get babes head.oooeer.i wouldnt have felt safe even with the glass there!

Great, place your child in front of a hungry wild animal and film it. If that glass had broken, the lion would be blmaed for being a lion. The idiot mother would of been the victim and the lion destroyed. Humans are the worst. We go and capture a wild animal, break their souls by caging them for the rest of the lives so we can dangle morsels before them and draw amusement from their torture. The mother should be cained for stupidity and the child taken away.

If that glass had broke, the laughter would have quickly turned to screams. :)

Poor animal shouldn't be in cages simply to amuse us.
