President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed “deep concern” over increasing reports of mistreatment of children in the country, including rape and sexual abuse.
Speaking during his weekly radio address, Nasheed said that protecting children was an important part of the government’s role.
He publicly thanked opposition DRP MP Rozaina Adam for her work on the domestic violence bill and its submission to parliament.

President should be concerned long time ago, even before he became President and all along the last two years. Child abuse of every form is in this country. These reports have been there years ago. The last reports publicized, came out already in the last Government.
President and others including the Ministry of Health as well as other institutions like police, hospitals all will know about this. To say they don't, means they have ignored it.
Few people fought hard to make this an issue without much outcome and did not get much response for reasons from lack of legislation to absence political priority. It is evident in the punishments that perpetrators get how unimportant child abuse is.
The previous Government tried hard to pretend it did not happen so as to blind people to the perfect Maldives.
I hope it is not the increasing reports about abuse but rather the fact that there is such violence and to such an extent that would concern the President and more.
Everything that allows for child abuse of any form must be stopped and I expect the President to stand for kids. I expect the President to make it a priority on his agenda to stop kids being hurt. I expect the Parliament to make sure the punishments are very severe for child abuse.
