A Quran teacher on Filladhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll has been arrested after he was discovered inside a room with a 13 year old girl.
Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam confirmed that the teacher was arrested on Monday night and was in police custody.
A Filladhoo islander told Minivan News that the teacher was a temporary Islam and Quran teacher who had been working at Filladhoo school for two months.
‘’He is 19 years old and the 13 year-old girl was his girlfriend,’’ the islander alleged. “They were inside a room in the girl’s grandmother’s house when the police arrested him.’’
The islander claimed the girl’s parents were aware of their relationship and noted that such things were “quite common on the island.’’
The teacher had been reported to police by some boys on the island who had a grudge against him, the islander claimed.
A total of 198 arrests were made for child abuse cases from the beginning of the year to the end of September 2010.
The crime of child abuse is most common in Male’. More than 16 percent of girls in Male’ under the age of fifteen are sexually abused, four percent higher than the national average.
The national average stands at 12 percent – of every 100 Maldivian girls under the age of fifteen, twelve are sexually abused. Most perpetrators of the crime, according to a 2007 Gender Ministry report on women’s health and well-being, are male family members of the children.
The second most common perpetrators are male acquaintances of the family, neighbours, teachers or religious leaders.
Three men from Filladhoo were arrested recently for allegedly using spy cameras to filming videos young girls showering.
According to the islander, the three men admitted they committed the crime but have since been released by the court.

Relationships between 13 years and 19 years is common in Maldives. It does not limit to the teachers or any other profession.
I wish there were more details here.
Was the child being sexually abused at the time of arrest? Or is it merely being in a room with the girl that's the matter?
It might sound like a stupid question, but in a country where people get sentenced for possessing pornography byour Judges (presumably the only squeaky clean Maldivians remaining who are yet to chance upon porn in their lifetime), this needs to be asked.
Also, there appears to be a disproportionate amount of child-rapists among people of 'religion'.. qur'an teachers, and "scholars" who seem to gain easy access to children.
This makes one worry about local extremist groups that intend to take away young men to a 2 day 'camp' on secluded islands, away from family and others.
Perhaps a police/military escort is in order?

Why not establish Islamic law properly in the Maldives. Once it is publicly announced that Islamic Law is to be implemented and all punishments are to be according to Islamic law as well, Im pretty sure people will restrain from these situations. Currently under western cultural influence either through TV or elsewhere, all of us have easy access to what is wrong, hence it is always easier to go astray if we knew we can get away with things. That is logic when it comes to any intention to do something wrong.
At the same time the Human Rights Commission in Maldives will have to stop trying to give protection to criminals, be him a small or big criminal. Next you have the Judges who are corrupt to their bones with all those money going in their large pockets.
So again.. why not target the Judges in these articles? If this is just an article and nothing more.. than it is ok. But if it is to do good, then the problem must be addressed transparently from all sides and an actually a solution should be sought. These situations will keep repeating unless Islamic education and Law is implemented with understanding from a young age. Since most politicians are busy with unimportant issues, wasting the country's time.. I guess we will only see more articles and articles like this and others without a solution.
Do also note that just because this person is a Quran teacher, does not mean he actually understands the Quran when he reads it. Many Maldivians know how to read the Quran, but does not know the language Arabic in order to understand it. Its like learning how to read the letters but not knowing what you are reading all this time. People should start learning Arabic if they want to learn Quran especially if they care about God's words. It should also be encouraged in school since Maldives is a Muslim country by law.

minivan news is just about the only thing i have against the people ruling the country right now (yes we all know minivan is not independent). the selective nature of the news and the speed at which some types of news make it on the site compared to some other very important news, are just some of the things that shows the true nature of minivan. support for religious freedom or secularism and out-right war on a particular religion are very different things.

A 19 year old is referred as a Quran teacher? I think journalist and media reporters need to be more sensible and reasonable when reporting such stories. It is different when a 13 year old and a 30 year old adult is in a room. As we all know dating among youngsters is common among Maldivians though I agree it is not appropriate.

A 19 year old guy is significantly more mature mentally and physically and therefore should be responsible. It is also known that young adults are more experimental at this age.
Age thirteen is still seen as the last stages of childhood mentality and is very vulnerable and goes through many changes, changing from childhood to young adulthood over slow five year to six years. A child is physically not ready for sexual activity that leads to motherhood and adult responsibilities.
While cultural norms and the evolution of the human body and psychology can be addressed through education, religious advocates increasingly ignore the biological maturity a girl needs through a fully grown body to be a mother.
In conclusion, the tendency is to sexualize young girls in the Maldivian society and is encouraged by religious practices.

Why blame western culture for this incident. Isn't child abuse common in the more backward islamic societies today? In Yemen, Saudi, Somalia and Afghanistan girls as young as eight are routinely married off. This is because there is no minimum age limit for marriage defined in sharia law.........the girl must reach puberty.........this can be as young as eight and nine.
