A speedboat travelling to Hulhulé from Rannaalhi Resort collided with a Hulumalé ferry yesterday around noon.
ADK Hospital reported nine injuries, including three children. Five passengers were injured seriously, Miadhu reports.
An eye witness saw the speedboat being kept afloat near Funadhoo by emergency inflation devices.
The ferry was taken back to Malé ferry terminal. “There was a shattered window and the railing was broken,” said the witness.
Water regulations prohibit speedboats travelling at full speed near Malé. It is likely that these precautions were not taken into account. The regulations make it highly improbable for a serious accident like this to occur.

This accident does not surprise me at all. I am sure that no speedboat captain knows about the regulation that prohibits them from travelling a full speed near Male. If they are aware of the regulation then not one of them follows it. I witnessed speedboats up on the plane, accelerating to full speed inside the airport harbour wall and travelling at maximum speed within 30 metres of the harbour wall outside number 1 jetty in Male.
I have complained to the resorts that some of these boats are registered to on several occasions only to suffer another near miss by the same vessel within days. Most of the captains are young men with no real sense of self preservation or danger and little concern for other vessels.
