Zakath fund puts two million towards scholarship programme

The Islamic Ministry has added two million rufiya to its Zakath-funded scholarship programme, reports Haveeru.

Haveeru reported that there was now seven million rufiya in the Zakath fund’s scholarships programme.

Points for applicants would be given according to academic results and financial conditions, Haveeru said.

Police arrest man abusing 10 year old girl

Police have arrested a man in the act of sexually abusing a 10 year-old girl in Hithadhoo, reports Haveeru.

Haveeru reported that police heard a girl crying while they were patrolling in the area. The man was arrested at the scene.

This was the sixth child abuse case to occur in Hithadhoo, Haveeru noted.

3G Plus expands to Kudahuvadhoo and Mahibadhoo

Dhiraagu has expanded its 3G Plus network to include Mahibadhoo and Kudahuvadhoo, the respective capitals of Alifu Dhaalu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll.

Access to the 3G Plus network enables high-speed mobile broadband services and offerings such as Dhiraagu’s touchNET.

The telco said it would be expanding the service to other islands in the near future.

EU confirms €6 million grant to boost governance

The EU will provide a €6 million grant to boost governance on top of an existing €4 million for areas including climate change and the fight against drug abuse.

“Additional contributions include a further €3.8 million from the EU’s Global Climate Change Alliance Funds which has also been allocated towards the on-going climate change project,” the EU said in a statement.

The objective of the new funding for 2011-2013 was “to fight poverty and help the Maldives follow a sustainable growth path, in line with Maldives’ policy priorities,” the EU said.

“Thus, under the single focal sector of governance, in consultation with the Government of Maldives and other stakeholders, EU assistance may be directed towards the areas of environment, combat drug use or public administration (not excluding trade or economic regulations).”

Maldives Stock Exchange certified carbon neutral

The Maldives Stock Exchange (MSE) has claimed it is the first in the world to become ‘carbon neutral’.

The MSE says it has worked to measure and offset emissions caused by its use of energy, waste disposal, business travel and staff commuting.

The stock exchange worked with offsetting company The CarbonNeutral Company to measure total greenhouse emissions and offset it through the purchase of carbon credits.

CEO of the MSE Ibrahim Nasir said that by adopting a leading environmental position within the financial services arena, “we hope to encourage listed companies within the stock exchange to also take action for the impact of their carbon emissions.”

President Mohamed Nasheed has said the entire country will be carbon neutral by 2020.

US signs MoU for $4.5 million Climate Change Adaption Program

The Maldives has signed a memorandum of understanding with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to launch a ‘Global Climate Change Adaptation Program’ in the Maldives.

The program includes a US$4.5 million assistance grant over the project’s three year lifespan ends to provide up to $4.5 million of grant assistance under the 3-year program, intended to increase the Maldives’ adaptive capacity to cope with the impacts of global climate change.

USAID Mission Director Rebecca Cohn said in a statement that “under this new program, USAID will collaborate with the Maldivian government to develop adaptation strategies and interventions that will enhance the country’s climate resilience. It is our hope that the Maldives can serve as a global model for climate change adaptation.”

Mohamed Aslam, Maldives Minister of Housing, Transport, and Environment, said the Maldives stood at the frontline of the battle against climate change.

“USAID’s new Global Climate Change Adaptation Program in the Maldives will assist us in our struggle to survive as a nation on these islands,” he said.

Queen’s Baton Relay held in Male’

President Mohamed Nasheed participated in the Queen’s Baton Relay held this morning as part of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed and other members of government also ran the around Male’ to complete the relay this morning.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be held in New Delhi, India from October 3-14, 2010.

The relay began at Buckingham Palace on October 20, 2009, and will travel through 70 Commonwealth member states before the games – a distance of more than 170,000 kilometres in 240 days, before it reaches India.

The Queen’s Baton’s journey will conclude when it is brought to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the opening ceremony of 2010 Commonwealth Games on 3 October, where the Queen’s message will be read aloud, officially opening the Games.

Opening the relay in Male’, President said New Delhi was emerging as one of the biggest cities in the world, and this year’s Commonwealth Games would be a moment when Maldivian athletes and the Maldives were in the focus of the world.

Participation was more important than winning, he added.
