Three day MDP congress begins with formation of women and youth wings

The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party [MDP] will commence its congress tonight at Dharubaaruge in Hakura Maalam.

Spokesperson for the party Ibrahim Haleem told Minivan News that the congress was scheduled to commence at 9:00pm with a speech by the party’s chairperson and MP Mariya Didi.

After the speech by Mariya, Haleem said the party’s parliamentary group leader MP ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik will also address to the delegates.

“After that there will be a special reception, and the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed will also take part in the congress tonight,’’ said Haleem. ‘’It will be biggest and sophisticated congress ever held in the country.’’

Haleem said that Friday afternoon discussion meetings will be held t establish the party’s “woman’s spirit” wing and “youth wing”, mirroring two institutions of the opposition DRP.

“During the meeting we will amend our party’s charter, and delegates will also discuss when to hold the party elections to appoint two new deputy chairpersons,’’ Haleem said. “After the discussion they will announce a date for the elections.”

He said the Chairperson would not change because “the term is five years and it has not expired yet.”

‘’We are expecting more than 1000 representatives, delegates and supporters to take part in the event,’’ he added.

The main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) held its annual congress in February this year.

During the congress the party elected its leader as MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and Umar Naseer, MP Ahmed Ilham, MP Ali Waheed and Ibrahim ‘Mavota’ Shareef as Deputy leaders.

DQP holds party elections and pledges to win 2013 presidential elections

Newly elected Dhivehi Qaumy Party (DQP) Dr Hassan Saeed has pledged to secure a victory for his party in the 2013 presidential elections, reports Miadhu.

In the first congress of the party held last weekend at Bandos Resort, Dr Saeed said he will continue his party’s efforts to make the current government accountable. He added DQP will form necessary alliances to win the 2013 elections.

Elections for the party were also held, but there was not much competition for leadership positions in the party. Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, Imad Solih and Abdul Matheen were elected as deputy leaders, and Abdulla Ameen was the only candidate for secretary general.

DRP’s leader will be party’s presidential candidate

The Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has decided that their candidate for presidential election will be the party’s leader, a decision made during the first day of the party’s third annual congress.

DRP spokesman Ali Solih said the party decided during today’s meeting that it would not hold primaries to elect the party’s presidential candidate, with “only a few of our supporters calling for primaries.”

DRP’s national congress meeting started at 3pm in Dharubaaruge, with former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom speaking at the opening ceremony.

DRP MP Ahmed Ilham said more than 900 DRP supporters attended the national congress.

He also said that former president Gayoom was given the special title of DRP’s ”Zaeem” (leader).

Former president of Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) and candidate for the DRP’s vice presidency Umar Naseer, who had called for primaries, said he respected the decision of the party.

”An amendment was approved concerning the party’s leadership, including a provision for the party’s leader to become the presidential candidate, which meant the amendment I presented was cancelled,” Umar said.

Spokesman for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ahmed Haleem said that DRP’s decision not to hold primaries showed that the party’s members had confidence in current leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali.

Haleem said he did not want to comment on whether he considered the decision to be democratic.

Candidates to submit names for DRP elections by 31 January

Candidates who wish to run in the Dhivehi Rayithunge Party (DRP) elections must submit their names by 31 January, reports Miadhu.

The party’s congress will decide the leader of the DRP and the party’s candidate for the 2013 presidential elections.

There are rumours that many party members would elect Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as the leader.

Although Maumoon has shown favour for Thasmeen to be elected as the next leader, Miadhu suggests that Maumoon and Thasmeen may run for president and vice president in 2013.

DRP to hold second congress

The Dhivehi Rayithunge Party (DRP) will hold its second congress on 3 February 2010, to elect new  members for party leadership.

According to Miadhu, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is contesting for party leadership and many believe he will win the elections in 2013.

Miadhu also reports that many within the party believe Maumoon should handover power.

In a previous DRP meeting, Maumoon claimed that Ahmed Thasmeen Ali would be the next leader of the party, Miadhu reported.
