Maiden flight lands at Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah’s newly completed airport was inaugurated today when a Dash-200 aircraft from Island Aviation landed at approximately 3.35 pm.

Witnesses of the event said those gathered to watch the landing were filled with joy and excitement, and may took photographs.

The airport, which measures some 1,200 metres in length and 30 metres in width, is expected to receive license to officially start operations within 2-3 days.

According to Mikal, a Fuvahmulah online magazine, Island Aviation’s Managing Director Ibrahim ‘Bandhu’ Saleem said scheduled flights would begin operations within the first week of next month.

Security switches on for SAARC

Armed forces, police and other relevant authorities are on alert for the SAARC Summit, Joint Inter Agency Taskforce Commander Hassan Ziyad said. Heads of State from the South Asian region, including high-profile leaders of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, will be arriving in Addu City starting November 5.

Ziyad told local media Haveeru that the heads of states are “considered high risk even in their own countries,” and that respective domestic security threats are being taken into account by SAARC security forces.

All attending countries are providing security measures. Indian surveillance aircraft and navy vessels are patrolling the areas around Addu City and Fuvahmulah.

Ziyad has said that six teams of sniffer dogs provided by Sri Lanka are among the most trusted security measures.

During a press conference last week, National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal assured that security was tight and “there is no risk at all, we aren’t even bothered about it.”

The armed forces will be on alert commencing Tuesday for the SAARC Summit to be held from November 10-11.

Gayoom not invited to SAARC for precedent, allegations

The Maldivian government will not invite former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to the upcoming SAARC summit, to be held in Addu City and Fuvahmulah between November 10-11.

According to local media, Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem yesterday said the allegations against Gayoom of “killing people” and “torture” made it difficult for the government to extend an invitation.

“LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] leader Prabhakaran wasn’t invited to previous SAARC summits because of such allegations against him. So it’s hard for me to do it,” Naseem said earlier on MNBC One.

Local police are currently investigating Gayoom’s son, Gassan Maumoon, for the violent turnout of a protest by ruling party MDP on Thursday, October 20.

Former heads of state are not routinely invited to SAARC summits.

Gun theft “could not have happened” at Addu’s Southern Command Centre

Reports of missing guns from the Southern Command Centre in Addu City have been denied by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Armed forces spokesperson First Lieutenant Abdulla Ali told local media that such an incident “couldn’t have happened at the centre because our management is much more organised. We don’t have to worry about guns missing from the centre.”

The command centre is currently holding special training programmes in preparation of the SAARC Summit, to be held in Addu and Fuvahmulah between November 10-11. The armed forces has established a Joint Inter-Agency Taskforce to oversee summit security at the centre, Haveeru reports.

All countries participating in the SAARC summit are providing security forces and equipment for the event.

Himandhoo, Fuvahmulah by-elections scheduled for November 19

The Elections Commission (EC) has announced by-elections to replace vacant council seats in Alif Alif Himandhoo and Gnaviyani Fuvahmulah for November 19 and invited potential candidates to apply before October 16.

Councillors of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Hassan Saeed from Fuvahmulah and Abdulla Jameel from Himandhoo, lost their seats after the Supreme Court ruled last week on cases contesting their eligibility to compete in the February council elections.

The Supreme Court ruled that Hassan Saeed had a decreed debt that he was not paying back in accordance with a lower court verdict while Abdulla Jameel had been convicted of theft. Both were disqualified under article 12(c) of the Local Council Elections Act.

Fuvamulah runs out of gas

Rain has prevented gas supplies from reaching Fuvahmulah, forcing the islanders to switch back to wood for fuel, reports Haveeru.

Gas retailers told Haveeru that the two main supply boats have been forced to remain in Laamu and Huvadhu Atoll due to the bad weather. Islanders are now using firewood and oil for cooking.

Haveeru also reported that switching to traditional methods of cooking has been a “painful” experience for the people of Fuvahmulah.
