Islamic Foundation calls for death sentence if apostate fails to repent

The Islamic Foundation has called for self-declared apostate Mohamed Nazim to be stripped of his citizenship and sentenced to death if he does not repent and return to Islam.

Nazim claimed he was “Maldivian and not a Muslim” during a public question-and-answer session with Islamic speaker Dr Zakir Naik, the first time a Maldivian has publicly announced he is not a Muslim.

According to the Maldivian constitution all citizens are required to be Muslim, and the country is always described as a “100 percent” Muslim country.

The 37 year-old angered many in the approximately 11,000-strong crowd with his statement during Dr Naik’s ‘Misconceptions about Islam’ lecture on Friday.

Dr Naik responded that Nazim had read the wrong books and “deviated from Islam”, and requested him “to read correct books on Islam, and Inshallah, you’ll come back to Islam.”

However Nazim did not relinquish the microphone and pressed Naik to clarify the penalty for apostasy.

“In Islam, there are many cases, it doesn’t mean death penalty,” Dr Naik explained. “But if the person who reverts who was a Muslim then converts to and becomes a non-Muslim and propagates his faith and speaks against Islam, and if it’s Islamic rule, then the person should be put to death. But just because a person who is a Muslim becomes a non-Muslim, death penalty is not the ruling.”

Nazim was escorted from the venue by police for his own protection, after members of the audience attempted to attack him.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam said two men who tried to attack Nazim were arrested after they attacked the police officers protecting him. Nazim himself “was not injured because police protected him,” Shiyam said.

He was taken to a police building where a crowd of protesters had gathered, calling for him to be punished. Shiyam confirmed that Nazim is now being held in an undisclosed location for five days while police investigate “in consultation with the Islamic Ministry and the Prosecutor General’s office.”

Today the Islamic Foundation of the Maldives issued a press statement calling on judges to give Nazim the opportunity to repent “and if he does not, then sentence him to death as Islamic law and Maldivian law agree.”

“The Islamic Foundation believes that the person who announces apostasy should be punished according to Islamic laws,” the NGO said, warning that Nazim represented “a disturbance to the religious views and the religious bonds that exist with Maldivians.”

“Hereby if this man does not do his penance and come back to the Islamic religion, the Islamic Foundation of the Maldives calls to take the citizenship away from this man as mentioned in the Maldivian constitution.”

If case crossed into areas not covered by the laws of the country, “then the judges should rely on Islamic law,” the NGO stated, as per article 142 of constitution which says judiciary shall look into Islamic shar’ia on matters not covered in law, and sentence accordingly.

“So it is requested that the commissioner of police run the legal research on this man and take this to the Prosecutor General’s office. We also request the Prosecutor General to go through this matter and to take this man to the criminal court for trial,” the Islamic Foundation said.

A government official involved in the legal process, who requested that his name and department be kept anonymous, said he was “really worried” and described the case as “a very sensitive subject”.

“Police are investigating the case,” he said. “My understanding is that the court authorities will give [Nazim] opportunities to change his mind. I think he will be given every opportunity to think about his decision.”

Minister for Islamic Affairs Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari told Minivan News that Ministry officials had acted quickly to remove Nazim from the venue “for his own protection”, and had now handed the matter over to the legal system.

“I don’t know if there is a penalty for apostasy according to Maldivian law,” he said.

The Adhaalath Party issued a press statement claiming that the act violated the constitution of the Maldives and called on the government “to strengthen Islam and protect the constitution.”

Religious NGO Jamiyyathul Salaf declined to comment on the matter during a press conference held today on another matter, however NGO Jamiyyathul Musliheen expressed “concern and regret” over the incident.

”Not a few number of Maldivian youths are moving further from the religion, and many of them are going renegade,” the NGO said in a press statement, adding that “it is a responsibility of the government to strengthen Islam in the country.”

President of the Human Rights Commission to the Maldives (HRCM), Ahmed Saleem, said “what happened was really unfortunate.”

“I think the best thing will be to talk to him and to make him understand the situation and the repercussions, talks which HRCM will welcome,” Saleem said.

He said he was unsure how the Maldivian government would handle the incident.

“I’m afraid of the reaction from the international community should we resort to harsh action,” he said. “I don’t think it would be in our interest – we have just been given a seat on the UN Human Rights Council. This is something we need to think seriously about before we start using harsh language.”

Minivan News contacted several local human rights NGOs however they had not responded at time of press.

A senior government source, who requested anonymity, said he felt the case “will be a real test of how the government will abide by its international commitments.”

Press Secretary for the President Mohamed Zuhair was on medical leave and unable to comment.

Minivan News was unable to reach Nazim himself for comment, however a person close to the matter described him as “a very sensible guy who will think of the people around him. But he will not give up on calling for people to be more honest about themselves. I think he will become a genuine refugee if he refuses to take back his words,” she said.

A transcript Dr Naik’s response to Nazim is available here.

Tell me what Nazim said to refute any verse of the Quran when Dr.Zakir Naik asked that question? Nazim's answer was that he has to find a reason to read quran and on the contrary he head mentioned that he read translation of the quran several times. I would have given a credit to Nazim if he has refuted any verse of Quran with logic and established evidence however his questions were not based on intellect instead he acted like a moron. And see how you people have tried to distort the very fact that happened infront of a massive audience.

  3. You better see this Hadith before commenting,
    Narrated "Ali"
I relate the traditions of Allah's Apostle to you for I would rather fall from the sky than attribute something to him falsely. But when I tell you a thing which is between you and me, then no doubt, war is guile. I heard Allah's Apostle saying, “In the last days of this world there will appear some young foolish people who will use (in their claim) the best speech of all people (i.e. the Qur'an) and they will abandon Islam as an arrow going through the game. Their belief will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have practically no belief), so wherever you meet them, kill them, for he who kills them shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection.”

  4. Have the people of Maldives ever heard of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

Have they ever heard of freedom of religion?

This is a very shameful incident! It makes all Muslims look like Barbarians.

  5. I think this must have been one of the worst moments in Naiks public speech history. We could clearly see that he was unable to convince Nazim and became insecure. Just came up with some kindergarden food/doctor/teacher/poison story. A good scholar would have offered him consultation after the lecture, but since he is making money out of religion - why should he? However, Nazim did not ask him to convince him, but about his verdict.
Good teachers like questioning students, good doctors will answer patient's questions! Being asked to "shut up and believe" stops us from questioning, and therefore learning and mentally evolving.

  6. Every Maldivian is castrated and lobotomized. There is no cure or procedure or or re-boot.

A handful of Maldivians escape this lobotomy and castration. But they are soon devoured by the cannibalistic mob of castrated and lobotomized zombies

  8. Marina, Islam does not permit questioning. Mr Naik was simply following his Quran.

"O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble..." (5:101)

"Some people before you did ask such questions, and on that account lost their faith..." (5:102)

Islam is an insecure, totalitarian cult. There are no good teachers and good doctors among the mullahs. All they will say is "shut-up and believe" as Mr Naik has said.

Now I can envision a massive barrage of "out of context, out of context" coming my way, as Muslims don't know much else to say when the Quran is scrutinised.

  10. The guy's a hero! But he certainly is not the only non-muslim or the first. if the constitution says we have to be muslim before we can hold a Maldivian passport cos I been travelling on one for years, and it's been taking me to places where I can drink my alcohol, take my drugs, make love to women, visit places of significance to other religions - from temples to churches, and it'll continue to do so in the future. A toast to the legend, Nazim! HA!

  11. Ok, let me be a little more civil about this. Several reasons why Islam doesn't make sense (not just the only ones though):

    - It claims we are all human beings and hence that we are all equal, but christians are still wrong for believing in a son of god, and jews are wrong for not accepting islam, which more or less makes them inferior in the eyes of islam... kinda contradictory to the whole idea of equality, don't you think??
    - We are all equal, and yet only the 'people of the book' are allowed to marry each other. But even that is between a Muslim man and woman from a Christian or Jewish background.. not a Jewish/Christian man to a Muslim woman.. why not?
    - We are all equal, yet we ridicule religions that are of different origins to islam. We call them idol-worshippers and what not, without any knowledge of what most of these religions are. Simple case in point is, that most religions we call 'idol worshippers' don't actually worship the idols.. they worship what is represented by the idols.. not just simply the idols!
    - Islam was sent by Allah to the whole world. Makes one wonder why he only sent prophets to what we now call The Middle East, when there is clear scientific evidence that people have been living all over the world for thousands of years.. including the Maldives. And don't go bagging science, cos I believe the scientific method was first adopted by Muslims and used by Muslims to further our knowledge of the world as Allah wants us to? Correct me if I'm wrong..
    - I, for one, think the idea of an eternal life is absolutely ridiculous. I imagine it would be boring, meaningless and pointless if you can sit on your lazy ass and get everything you wish for, for all of eternity.. makes no sense to me!!!
    - Eternal damnation to the unrepentant, the apostates etc etc.. hang on, isn't Allah supposed to be forgiving and merciful? If anyone supposedly deserves eternal damnation in the eyes of Allah, how forgiving is he exactly? If we're gonna talk about forgiving, isn't the Buddhist/Hindhu idea of being reincarnated as a lower life form more forgiving than ETERNAL damnation???

Just a few little pointers to keep in mind when you go around bashing people with your stupid holy books! Feel free to add more or just call on the government to carry out a mass execution of us non-believers.. depending on how forgiving you are I guess, heh!

  13. There are very few things I would voluntarily die for, but rejecting such a religion would be worth it. I deeply hope Nazim is let free, if not he has chosen a noble thing for which to be a martyr. If that happens it will never be forgotten; such senseless violence is always self defeating.

The Maldives have not committed themselves to the full declaration of the UN Human rights. They have reservations to Article 18:

"Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance"

  15. Nazim is the greatest, bravest maldivian who ever lived by a long mile... To suffer for standing up for what you believe is always hard, but it is a million times harder if you are not respected as a hero but as an outcast for doing so... When Anni and reformists resisted Maumoon, their suffering was worshipped by the people which made it far easier to undergo arrest and torture... Anni and co. had the support of the masses...They were heroes... But to make a stand which you will not be worshipped for, but shunned and rejected for, now that is a true hero, that takes more balls, soul and courage guts than anything I have seen...
Nazim is a million times stronger spiritually than Anni or anyone, I am going to carry a picture of that crazy hairy wild hero in my wallet to remind me of true sacrifice!!! Nazim is a billion times braver than any Muslim martyr, than anyone else in Male!

  16. I wonder why, when Maldivians get sick and are not happy with medical services available locally, they go to Bangkok instead of Saudi Arabia to pray.

Salaf and Islamic foundation must correct this situation and get them to go to Saudi Arabia. If a poor can't afford Salaf and Islamic foundation must use their influence with their Saudi partners and arrange free flights and so that they can go and pray there.

  17. @ Nazim's my hero,

I was just wondering whether you think Adolf Hitler is a hero?

I mean he did stand up for what he believed and raised an army which plunged the world in to an abyss of chaos for half a decade.

And he is "shunned and rejected" by almost all of mankind. So is Adolf Hitler a hero???

Are you going to carry a picture of Hitler along with Nazim's picture in your wallet??

  18. Obviously Nazim's actions have struck a chord with many Maldivian. Contrary to a lot of the above comments almost very single Maldivians is a Muslim.

    Some practice it, some don't.

And among those who don't devoutly practice the religion, I don't think there is a wide spread sentiment considering themselves to be atheists or agnostics.

With that said, as A Ahmed has said in a previous comment “undoubtedly, his action has antagonized many Maldivians and left an adverse impact on our closely knitted society . In deed this is a harbinger of many of such stuff yet to come.”

The question now is what his punishment should be for such a provocation.

Since there is no death penalty in The Maldivian Penal Code I personally think that we should sentence him to life in a super maximum security jail without possibility of parole.

“Objective is to provide long term, segregated housing for inmates classified as the highest security risks in the prison system - the "worst of the worst" criminals and those who pose a threat to national security.”
    Source: Wikipedia.com

He is among the worst of the worst and he does pose a threat to our national security. So lock him up and throw away the keys.

Also we should have the same punishment for murderers, rapist and pedophiles. Especially the pedophiles.

  19. @Visceral: Show me one case where this Nazim carried out the crime of genocide, ethnocide, unprovoked invasion and other assorted crimes on Maldives.

As far as I can see, his only "crime" was honesty.

Ah yes, Maldivian law is famous for trumping up charges. Harks me back to the good ol' days of war, when Maumoon bin Elfboy was in power.

Way to go! Missed "Nazim's my hero"'s point entirely! I admit it does take a guy with one-degree vision to equate Hitler with Nazim. In your mind, a guy who caused the death of millions and unbelievable suffering is on par with someone who had the courage to stand and and state his PERSONAL opinion??
You really must let us know where you learned mathematics. Bravo!

  21. I wonder who is more dangerous, Nazim or the brain-washed masses calling for his beheading? Seriously, if the very idea of existing in the same world as "kaafirs" is enough to send you off into a bloodthirsty frenzy, it is YOU, not Nazim, who needs to be put down for the safety of the rest of the SANE population.

  22. I am stupified by some of the comments here. Behead him? Lock him up and throw away the key?
Anyone know how many murderers, rapists, pedophiles, psycopaths with "licence to cut" and even terrorists are roaming about the streets of every island?
The fact that a convicted terrorist's whereabouts have been unknown for more than 4 months doesnt raise an eyebrow, but simply state a personal opinion and the hounds are after you!
Just like land, Maldivians seemed to have been on the tail end when brains were handed out.

  23. @Marina,

Ok, Just for apostasy death is not the answer. BUT what do you see daily on Minivan News? Isn't that maligning Islam? Are you sure apostates will leave Islam alone and mind there own business. WELL! Looking at the comments on this site - it's IMPOSSIBLE for apostates to keep their godforsaken ideas (which if almost always maligning Islam) to themselves, so in the same breath Zakir Naik said, IF, you start maligning Islam, THEN, THEN, THEN, your punishment is DEATH! The moment he is set free - he is sure to come and blast his TIRADE against Islam on Minivan News! So you see Islamic decisions are very intelligent and foolproof if applied correctly.

Isn’t the “un-castrated”, "un-lobotomized” handful who are the perversions, the trouble makers, those who are wrong as majority rules, Black sheep and so on???

See the majority is castrated and lobotomized, Therefore that’s the norm. Therefore there is no problem which is why it’s called the NORM!!!

    norm
    n

Well! I think he said that as far as he, the ROBBER is concerned he is LOGICAL, SCIENTIFIC and GOOD, that's why he was robbing. Why should he believe in others trying to prove that he was illogical and not GOOD!?

  27. Nazim's reversion back to Islam certainly indicates that Islam is the only true religion. His actions are justified by his lack of islamic education and the influence of people who are trying continuously to break our national unity.

I call on the government to provide islamic education in our schools to avoid such incidents.

Further, we also should put pressure (non-violently) on the people (like the minivan news journalists, Salim Waheed, Aniya, Hilath , and such people) who tries continously to impose their distorted ideology on the majority maldivians.

  28. This may be offensive, and it is, but it's the harsh truth: many young Europeans and Americans (and even many East Asians I've talked with) view Muslims as barbarians.

Cases such as this aren't really helping to reverse their misconceptions.

It's unfortunate, and I often dread for the future of our planet.

Different NGOs are trying to score points. I wonder how much petrol money the leaders or Salaf and Islamic foundation has been pocketing without the knowledge of their members.
I have “wind” that one NGOs’ leader had pocketed a 5 figures sums in US$ for championing for a particular case last December. Poor Nazim, you will be punished but your loose is someone’s gain! This is Dhivehi Raajje.

  31. Sorry for the previous comment, failed copy-paste:

As a Maldivian, I do not believe in freedom of religion: we have been living under the relative unity and identity of Islam for 19 full centuries, and I will not allow it to be broken by some Western concept of freedom of religion, that is barely over half a century old.

As a Muslim, I don't believe that this fellow should be executed; apostates should be given the chanece to repent. If they don't, on a minimum basis, their citizenship should be revoked, or they should be banished.

  32. Hard to believe anyone takes Naik seriously. Can a robber realise he is bad, without life after death? What an idiot. Of course he can!

The answer is the rule of law, as practised the world over, muslim or not, but better than that, he must be persuaded that robbery is wrong, because he learns to respect others, not because he is frightened of God or frightened of Hell.

I am afraid for the future if religious people think Naik has 'logic' when he has the opposite.

Nazim is courageous and intelligent, learn from him, do not persecute him

If you think Islam is a barbaric religion, then what is your religion?
Christianity? Did you ever read the Bible?

I think this verse from the Bible played a very important role in creating white imperial rule over much of the world.

Luke 19:27 "But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me."

This verse must have been the inspiration to kill all those innocent human beings in the name of holy war and inquisition!!

i still cant figure out how 'peace' comes with this particular brand of belief...how humanity comes last in the list.

sad that one has to be bound just because society decides that one has to be bound. who made them God? who is this God that demands absolute control, absolute power, who creates enmity between His creation?

oh! i forgot the kafirs may not be His creation...they are definitely of some other God...thats why they gotta go, they gotta be wiped out...destroyed..

as long as people belong to one belief then they are humans? brothers?? then they are society? then they should live??

The real God only requires you to come to Him out of your own free will, He never forces His hand on anyone...everyone in his own way acknowledges Him as God...so easy yet so impossible to reach???

  40. Well ... I am Monir Hasan from Bangladesh ... here like to SALUTE Nazim vai ... for his outstanding bravery and stand for the truth. We ex-muslim atheist are less than minors and treated all the way same like Nazim vai in Muslim majority countries. As you know, Muslims made themselves the Dumbest among all the religion, still living in stone age, have no recent sign that they will improve the situation. Yeah … Here this comment section is that good indication.

Joker Nayek: the stupidest lecturer with complete controlled environment full of dumbest muslim crowd … speeches “Logic”(?)! … How pathetic!

Here’s you can see Nazim never claimed any best food … but that Joker questioned nazim as he did, when that stupid joker himself easily can be questioned for claiming best food, best book, best God, best religion etc. And here’s you can see the subject - “Robbing” suddenly out of no where comes to make joke on Nazim (though Nazim never had the chance to clarify or establishing the logic). Well any literate person having least knowledge on sociology or social science knows that robbing is not moral … cause of its nature. Robbing creates a chain chaos to the society … long before even Mohammad shouted out of the cave or Marry claiming her virginity or the Noah’s fancy disaster management … human society prohibited robbing. The value of … the morality of … the logic of “robbing is no good thing to do” is no mystical voice or god send commandment.

Well … pathetic that the dumber the lecturer … the dumbest the audience. A great stupidity just staged here.

  42. guys, seriously:
why is it so difficult to let someone express their opinions? what happened in the minds of people while growing up that they can honestly say and believe a human being should be killed because of their opinion?
if you are truly a believer, and realise the power of god, why would you not instead wish fortune and wisdom to this person and hope one day he will see who god is...
all you do is to propagate a god of hatred and intolerance, while as robots exclaim "peace be upon him...."

wake up and realise there is no peace in your words or actions, and one day god will remind you of that by exclaiming i do not know you...

Religion, religion, religion! Nothing better to do all day, heck?
You talk always about the past (it´s an old rhetorical trick applied in the hope that others are not able to counter!), the past of hundreds of years ago, and you have not realized that for the past nobody gives a damn nowadays.
Acting according to Luke 19:27 (and many other vile claims in the old and newer testament) would grant the perpetrators, be it in the USA or in Europe, a life jail term handed over after a full criminal court procedure. Regarding the former inquisition, forget about it. As you know, Westerners live in democracies where secular law overrules the ancient church laws. Church laws, to the detriment of the organized church leaders, have NO importance in our democracies. The church has to submit to secular law and if they are not prepared to do so, the courts will force them.
I never hear you talk about the miserable conditions of the average islamic state, i.e. their populations. I certainly do not have to list them here for you.
Many of them, Maldives being one of them for sure, are travelling around asking for money – for western money mostly. It should not have escaped you, that your personal arch-enemy, the USA, has just granted many more $ millions to the Nasheed government for “climate adaption”, LOL! And how much money did you receive recently from the EU in Brussels? And from the IMF? FYI, 40% of all the IMF funds are being provided by the USA because they are the biggest member of the IMF.
The USA is also the biggest supplier of food which you can often see on TV when those big bags are being distributed by the unholy UN. They show the words: “A gift from the people of the USA”.
Ever read words like a gift from Pakistan, Sudan or the Maldives?
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has just granted $ 1.5 BILLION at the G-8 to alleviate mother and child poverty – guess where?
Have YOU and your gang ever considered working and becoming productive members of Maldivian society? Hard to consider because you and your salafist friends appear to hang around message boards most of the time. But go on, heck! The day will come when your tourist numbers start to decline fast. Westerners who have spent holidays in resorts DO read often your papers after returning home. Many ask themselves why they were willing to spend hard earned money in such a weird and obviously still not free country with a constitution that provokes revolt in every western mind.
Is Islam so weak that it has to be protected 24/7? Is it so weak that the slightest dissent is forbidden?
I give you an idea how to spend your time better: learn something (besides “religion”), get a job, earn your own money and try not to harm your friends, neighbours and compatriots. If you can manage that, I would praise you for it(and probably your God too).

  45. What a great religion Islam is. We will kill you if you do not believe in it any more. Funny thing is the Maldives is FULL of atheists and Agnostics. This guy isn't any different other than he has some balls to get up in front of a crowd and say it. If Islam was perfect you would not have to make a law such as this, as no one would ever want to leave. Do you honestly think this poor guy converted back to Islam? haha if you do, you are suckers hahaha. He quite obviously did this to save his neck. I DARE the Maldivian government to execute him...see how many tourists you get to your backward country..

  47. I now get to see the truth of the Maldives. I have Muslim friends, here in the United States, and I accept and tolerate their religion. I am a Catholic. If I visited the Maldives and was open about my religion would Muslims in Maldives call for my execution? I would like to visit the entire world, however Maldives doesn't seem to be a place where I would spend my hard earned dollars any time soon.
