Islamic Foundation calls for death sentence if apostate fails to repent

The Islamic Foundation has called for self-declared apostate Mohamed Nazim to be stripped of his citizenship and sentenced to death if he does not repent and return to Islam.

Nazim claimed he was “Maldivian and not a Muslim” during a public question-and-answer session with Islamic speaker Dr Zakir Naik, the first time a Maldivian has publicly announced he is not a Muslim.

According to the Maldivian constitution all citizens are required to be Muslim, and the country is always described as a “100 percent” Muslim country.

The 37 year-old angered many in the approximately 11,000-strong crowd with his statement during Dr Naik’s ‘Misconceptions about Islam’ lecture on Friday.

Dr Naik responded that Nazim had read the wrong books and “deviated from Islam”, and requested him “to read correct books on Islam, and Inshallah, you’ll come back to Islam.”

However Nazim did not relinquish the microphone and pressed Naik to clarify the penalty for apostasy.

“In Islam, there are many cases, it doesn’t mean death penalty,” Dr Naik explained. “But if the person who reverts who was a Muslim then converts to and becomes a non-Muslim and propagates his faith and speaks against Islam, and if it’s Islamic rule, then the person should be put to death. But just because a person who is a Muslim becomes a non-Muslim, death penalty is not the ruling.”

Nazim was escorted from the venue by police for his own protection, after members of the audience attempted to attack him.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam said two men who tried to attack Nazim were arrested after they attacked the police officers protecting him. Nazim himself “was not injured because police protected him,” Shiyam said.

He was taken to a police building where a crowd of protesters had gathered, calling for him to be punished. Shiyam confirmed that Nazim is now being held in an undisclosed location for five days while police investigate “in consultation with the Islamic Ministry and the Prosecutor General’s office.”

Today the Islamic Foundation of the Maldives issued a press statement calling on judges to give Nazim the opportunity to repent “and if he does not, then sentence him to death as Islamic law and Maldivian law agree.”

“The Islamic Foundation believes that the person who announces apostasy should be punished according to Islamic laws,” the NGO said, warning that Nazim represented “a disturbance to the religious views and the religious bonds that exist with Maldivians.”

“Hereby if this man does not do his penance and come back to the Islamic religion, the Islamic Foundation of the Maldives calls to take the citizenship away from this man as mentioned in the Maldivian constitution.”

If case crossed into areas not covered by the laws of the country, “then the judges should rely on Islamic law,” the NGO stated, as per article 142 of constitution which says judiciary shall look into Islamic shar’ia on matters not covered in law, and sentence accordingly.

“So it is requested that the commissioner of police run the legal research on this man and take this to the Prosecutor General’s office. We also request the Prosecutor General to go through this matter and to take this man to the criminal court for trial,” the Islamic Foundation said.

A government official involved in the legal process, who requested that his name and department be kept anonymous, said he was “really worried” and described the case as “a very sensitive subject”.

“Police are investigating the case,” he said. “My understanding is that the court authorities will give [Nazim] opportunities to change his mind. I think he will be given every opportunity to think about his decision.”

Minister for Islamic Affairs Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari told Minivan News that Ministry officials had acted quickly to remove Nazim from the venue “for his own protection”, and had now handed the matter over to the legal system.

“I don’t know if there is a penalty for apostasy according to Maldivian law,” he said.

The Adhaalath Party issued a press statement claiming that the act violated the constitution of the Maldives and called on the government “to strengthen Islam and protect the constitution.”

Religious NGO Jamiyyathul Salaf declined to comment on the matter during a press conference held today on another matter, however NGO Jamiyyathul Musliheen expressed “concern and regret” over the incident.

”Not a few number of Maldivian youths are moving further from the religion, and many of them are going renegade,” the NGO said in a press statement, adding that “it is a responsibility of the government to strengthen Islam in the country.”

President of the Human Rights Commission to the Maldives (HRCM), Ahmed Saleem, said “what happened was really unfortunate.”

“I think the best thing will be to talk to him and to make him understand the situation and the repercussions, talks which HRCM will welcome,” Saleem said.

He said he was unsure how the Maldivian government would handle the incident.

“I’m afraid of the reaction from the international community should we resort to harsh action,” he said. “I don’t think it would be in our interest – we have just been given a seat on the UN Human Rights Council. This is something we need to think seriously about before we start using harsh language.”

Minivan News contacted several local human rights NGOs however they had not responded at time of press.

A senior government source, who requested anonymity, said he felt the case “will be a real test of how the government will abide by its international commitments.”

Press Secretary for the President Mohamed Zuhair was on medical leave and unable to comment.

Minivan News was unable to reach Nazim himself for comment, however a person close to the matter described him as “a very sensible guy who will think of the people around him. But he will not give up on calling for people to be more honest about themselves. I think he will become a genuine refugee if he refuses to take back his words,” she said.

A transcript Dr Naik’s response to Nazim is available here.

  1. Our constitution is in blatant violation of the UN Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms- Article 9: Freedom of thought, conscience and religion. I felt the need to paste the clause here after reading some of the comments;

    9.1.Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion;
this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom,
either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to
manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and
    observance.
9.2.Freedom to manifest one’s religion or beliefs shall be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a
democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of
public order, health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and
    freedoms of others.

First and foremost, Maldivians should be educated and made aware of what the "Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms" are and in particular the above Article- a national level debate must ensue among the gov, ngo, schools, community circles- then only can we achieve harmony and peace in a dynamic society that is deemed civilized enough and well equipped to cope with the 21st century challenges in a globalized world.

The freedoms enjoyed by the western civilizations today are won by blood, war and much hardship, in which millions were consumed to death in the many confrontations and battles with the Church (the Supreme Authority then) through many centuries of religious totalitarian oppression.

As life revolves in a cycle and history tends to repeat itself, the Islamic countries with the Maldives will be no different in the price they pay if they desire to attain the universal rights and freedoms deserving of their citizens in the time to come. There ain't no easy road to this.

A State or Institution that tries to control the very basic and personal traits of being a human- their thoughts, opinions, feelings, belief and faith through arbitrary means is the height of oppression.

Imagine, India or any European country tomorrow amends their constitution to recognize only Hinduism or Christianity, what would become of the minority faiths? Should the Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, etc in India be called apostates and their religious books burned? Their citizenship ripped off and be made refugees? or be given an ultimatum to repent and if refused punishment by death? Just think of the injustice and cruelty this type of stipulation in any constitution can bring upon a society.

The State should promote coexistence and tolerance instead of dictating one's faith. The point is, you cannot control a person's thoughts and conscience by the use of Fear in the name of religion. If so, then where is the beauty and spirituality in one's faith? With such a feeble mindedness how can we ever achieve the states of higher consciousness.

I gather that Nazim's case is the first beacon to the inevitable uprising and Change is the only constant!

    Aye, for Pluralism!

  2. Zakir Naik gives answer to the question, it doesn't mean death penalty for just converting from Islam to another religion. I think the Islamic Foundation needs a 2nd doze of Zakir Naik's lecture.

  3. Why are we worried about what the kafirs are going to think and how we a going to lose financially?
Islam without doubt is the only religion accepted by god. For someone to oppose that deserves death.

Remember any country who chooses shari'ah over democracy is automatically bombed and sanctioned by the Western Democratic governments, and any muslim who says sharia is better than democracy is jailed or labelled extremist or terrorist. Lets fight against this oppression rather than worry about what the west will think!

  4. The Islamic Foundation is spreading wrong Islam. With Zakir Naik I reject the Islamic Foundation of Maldives for spreading wrong Islam in Maldives. They should be sent and sent to education with Nazim.

  5. This guy Nazim looks like a European/Western agent who has been sent to rake up issue to malign Islam. It's quite evident from the question he asked. He already knew the answer and the repercussions. His masters must have given him assurance that they will not let anything happen to him. Similar attack on Islam was carried out in Nigeria where an unmarried woman(an agent again) was sent to Islamic court to put up her (fake) case to the judge that she has a child "out of wedlock" but father is not paying anything for the child. So she demanded some monthly maintenance from father of the child. Now, didn't she know what's the punishment for adultery? She very well knew about it but she was just carrying out commands of her masters. This was made a big issue in the international community after the judge pronounce punishment for committing adultery (zina). I would suggest that proper investigations be done at whose behest this guy is working and then punish him on the basis of being a traitor. Because if death penalty is pronounced as per Sharia' then this is going to become international issue which seems to be the goal of this whole issue and under pressure the government will have to release this guy. So find out who he is working for and if found guilty just punish him for being a traitor who wants to bring instability to the region.

  6. To get easiest way of fame and media attention now a days is basing Islam.Thats a trend in western media, if you write or draw something bashing Islam, it will be headline every where these days. They will be invited all major medias and talking points of the week it will be. Nazim is definitely an opportunist to get media attention. He don't care about any religion. Only thing he want is to get fame and may be an easy route to live or get asylum.

  7. My fellow brothers and sisters who believe in such people like DJ Zakir Naik (the performer) are indeed the people who are very weak in their mind. All they could say that they are 10000% muslim and go on raping, stealing, drinking and all that shit. I got lot friends who claim they are muslim and what is inside them is perverts n sick sick thoughts. you ask the majority of people if they are muslim, and they'll proudly say YES! why? because they got no balls no guts to say the TRUTH! Even you yourself who is reading this should ask your own self about what you have done bad n good on this earth. you may lie to every person on this earth but not yourself and GOD himself. I think Nazim is a man with lot of guts and he should have the freedom to express his own thoughts weather it's a crown of 11000 or a billion. HE's the mann and just ask your self if you have the guts as much as him. If not, just hang or behead ya own self cuz ya tooo weak to be upon us species.

  8. Nazim is just a vocal symbol for Maldivian society who refuse to voice their beliefs/lack of such for fear of reactions such as this.

Regardless of the anger expressed by insecure babies whose only claim to religiosity is making loud declarations of their faith and superficial shows of devotion which amount to public spectacle, there are MANY MANY MANY MANY UNCOUNTABLE Maldivians who do not fit themselves into the fashionable religious box of the day. It was Azharite Islam before, It's Salafi Regressionism now. I myself do not adhere to the political interpretations of Islam spouted by clerics whose only interest is in continuing wars and challenging international power structures at the expense of ordinary people.

HARDLY ANYONE who has an intellect above 120 actually does sell their souls to Houdinis like Naik (who forces everyone to refer to him as Dr. to hoodwink them into affording him a status which he does not deserve). The conflict here is between the educated social and academic elite of the Maldives and those average Maldivians who buy into populist notions of piety which feed their anger at those around them who are more gifted, better educated, have more money and do not need crutches and opiates to get through the day.

I would like to be less caustic but the exploitation of the mentally weak among us threatens to endanger those who can actually serve this country in leadership capacities. Dishonesty will become the norm in this context where expressing one's true feelings gets one axed (literally).

FYI - Dr. Naik's lectures are MEANT for 5th graders and therefore appeal to those of little intellect. Do not be enraged or surprised that those of us who have a 3 digit IQ do not care for them. We don't have to and will NOT.

  9. I am happy to see so many who are honestly acknowledging that Maldives is not a 100% Muslim nation; in fact, it never has been. Even Dr. Zakir said he doesn't know of any place that is 100% Islamic. In fact, if all the Maldivian non-believers had the courage to go public as Nazim has, the jails would be full and the courts would be swamped by perhaps thousands of honest apostates.
Laws and governments cannot make believers out of non-believers. Laws and governments can only make liars out of non-believers who must keep silent to stay safe.
Noya was right: Change is coming, Maldives will have freedom of religion someday, and the sooner the better.

  10. It is very clear that Naik said that the death penalty applies if an apostate speaks against Islam, and in an Islamic state, this person would get the death penalty (we are not an Islamic state).

However, that doesn't mean that I take everything this guy says. He clearly wanted to tell Nazim that he has wrong education, and to better watch Peace TV (?!) and read the "right books". The analogy with his patient (don't question the doctor) or a student-teacher (you have to believe what the teacher tells) show that Naik tried his best to CONVINCE Nazim to NOT question, but take whatever he "has to believe".

Not questioning means "speaking right from the horses mouth". Being a doctor or a teacher, or a mullah - not answerable, not transparent - oh, are we hiding something?

In my point of view, a doctor, or a teacher should not be fed up by patients/students posing questions.

Naik was cornered and came up with some stupid kindergarden stories (food, poison etc.). He is trying to compare facts (e.g. poison) with fiction (religion).

Naik has proven to be a charlatan! He could not say that the reason why we should be "good" (e.g. to NOT rob) is because of our human ethics - that's what differentiates us humans from savages! Instead, he keeps on threatening with judgement day.

Naik was promoting his channel, tapes, CDs, books and his Islamic schools. Most of his talk was crap and anti-Western ("you eat pig, you behave like a pig" - the explanation of the tapeworm wasn't even correct... it will stay alive in half-cooked pork, not in thoroughly cooked pork).

"Today science tells us..." was one of his favourite - while he's loud on quoting quranic and biblical verses, he could not give a single reference for "what science tells us".

Naik first encouraged non-muslims to come to the microphone, then why was there a public outcry?

Nazim has just made his personal decision just like 80% of the world: to be non-muslim, and probably to be like around 15% of the world's population: to be non-religious or atheist.
He did not rape, he did not molest a child, he did not steal, fornicate or murder - he did not commit a crime.
He was just honest. For that he should be punished?

"Oh, there's an atheist... he doesn't fit into our 100% Muslim label... let's kill him".

Fell like my country has finally come back to the medieval ages... congratulations.

  11. I too have a feeling this whole thing is STAGED.
And there may be people backing Nazim.

Simply declaring that one does not believe in Islam or a religion does not punish him with death penalty.

May be people wants to spread more rumours about religion specifically Islam in Maldives. These people will be only happy if death penalty is called for Nazim.

    @ Muas MZ
I suggest you re-read what apostacy in Islam is.

  12. It just sounds so ridiculous to me that Naik or the Islamic Ministry really think they could REVERT Nazim?

How can you revert an atheist who has realized that political power and control over a mass of people is the only aim of organized religion?

I could not agree more with Alan Rossman above: "Laws and governments cannot make believers out of non-believers. Laws and governments can only make liars out of non-believers who must keep silent to stay safe."

  13. You have foreigners living in the Maldives who are Christians, Buddhist, Athiest and any other religion small or big. Nobody cares, and we all live peacefully. Heck we even invite them to our house for dinners.
Yet, a Maldivian suddenly says he is not Muslim. Biggest problem this country has faced. All Muslim Maldivians rights were violated in an instant.

This is a typical example of double standards.

  15. What the HRCM has to do is protect and defend human rights.

The whole commission should resign in shame for trying "to talk to him and to make him understand the situation and the repercussions"

And shame on every NGO, every politician who has publicly spoken about defending human rights.

Shame on the Maldivian people for letting bloodthirsty barbarians like Islamic Foundation decide how our country should be governed.

  16. I feel Nazim want him to publish himself to be a hero of maldivens to be popular in news by saying non-muslim himself and also he may be a mental guy. First he should go for medical checkup and he then he should teach what is islam, before give judgement

  17. I demand the resignation of the HRCM for failing to step into the protect the man.

Having been around the youth - and being young and idealistic myself - I can easily state that the reason why youth is steadily moving away from religion is because of the bleeding credibility of Islam ever since it was hijacked by Salafist extremists.

It's extremist, intolerant organizations like the "Islamic Foundation" that makes both Muslims and Non-Muslims revile organized religion, not Naazim.

This 'call' to prescribe death to a man for being honest betrays nothing but this fanatic, flaming intolerance of these lunatics.

It's my honest desire that all salafi indoctrinated folk, who demand death, violence and butchery at the merest drop of a hat be given some counselling.

If that still fails to wash away the desert barbarism, then ship them off to the desert.

  18. This situation is entirely created by the extremists, where the virus started spreading from. They convert all ladies to wear buruga (in this hot country), and beardo guys with short pants. It is useless the blame later on the 'bellboy' Nazim. Political freedom when necessary was opened by Nasheed. Welcome! Now I think for Maldives - Freedom of religion whether like it or not, accept or not, is called for.!! There is an unspoken religious war going on between the mullahs and wahabis./moderate muslims/apostates/aeithests and what nots. It has to be stopped, only way is open up, so whoever can practise whatever. After all Maldives is supposed to be democratic, which means religion as well.

  19. Why are these brain-dead extremists so desperate to build a shari'a state here in Maldives?.

Especially when even the most fanatic supporters of Shari'a law are unable to name EVEN ONE COUNTRY under Shari'a law that is free from intimidation, injustice, cruelty and terror. They always say "just watch the new Maldives..."

Oh, they had the chance to "revert him to Islam", but the idiot squad just dashed that hope.

The Ministry of Islmaic Affairs petrol the streets. They carry a device that they strap on randon passers by. This device monitors the thoughts of the person on whose wrist it is stapped on. If any unIslamic thought is found he is taken t the Fish Market and beheaded. No woman is ever taken because women never come out of their homes.

if nazim is a threat to society then zakir naik was a worse threat. we don't need these ridiculing, provoking people coming and preaching in the name of islam while they are looking to expand their business. open your eyes maldivians!

and now we have bilal phillips scheduled for next week. are we testing how far the violence will go? are we inviting bloodshed? I SAY ISLAMIC MINISTRY DON"T BRING THESE PEOPLE TO TAKE OUR PEACE AWAY. we have the qur'an, the translations, the hadhith books and peace tv too. please don't make our people kill one another. this is enough already!

So get him towards Islam by talking, Inshaa Allah.. We might see a much more religious generation from Nazim's Blood

  28. Allah says in the quran (interpretation of the meaning): 'Whoever disbelieves in (ie.,denies) Allah after his belief...except for one who if forced (to renounce his religion) while his heart is secure in faith. But those who (willingly) open their breasts in disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment.
That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hearafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
Those are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allah has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless.
Assuredly, it is they, in the Hearafter, who will be the losers.

  29. Stop talking nonsense and think critically. We know who are behind all this, it’s not a secret. We know who talked nazim into this. Anyway nazim did not use his freedom of expression but rather he abused it. What nazim did was not freedom of expression. The meaning of freedom of expression is misunderstood by many people. For example you don’t go into a church full of prayers and declare that you do not believe in god or Jesus. If you do such a thing you are violating the freedom and the right of others. If you want answers for your misconceptions than you meet with a priest alone. Nazim did not pose a question but he made a statement.

Nazim is a confused man and I believe he is mentally unstable too. He wants to know his verdict in Islam. This is hilarious. He says he doesn’t believe in religion and I wonder why he wants to know his verdict in Islam or any other religion. This was something planned and we know the people behind this. Later Nazim says he needs to study all religions to decide what religion is most suitable for him. He is contradicting what he said before. He said he don’t believe in any religion. Hahahaha dhen lalalalaa

  30. NAZIM IS OUR HERO
I call on the government to set Nazim free and send him to another country for his safety because a minority Maldivians are a bunch barbarians with zero tolerance.

Under Maldivian law he cannot be stripped of citizenship. He cannot be prosecuted neither by Islamic sharia nor by Maldivian law since he has never been a Muslim. How can he leave Islam if he never believed in the first place.

If he were to be tried, he should stand firm and should not back down.

Also if this is about following Islamic preachings then why is bank of Maldives open still. 37. The following is a story well known to Maldivians, mostly because of the Egyptian TV series on the lives of the Prophets shown every Ramazan. It seems most Maldivians did not get the message of this story involving the Prophet Ibrahim.

    -------
One day Ibrahim (AS) invited a Majoosi, a fire worshiper to have meals with him. On sitting down to eat Ibrahim (AS) asked him to begin in Allah`s name; to read Bismillah. The Majoosi said, "You want to buy my deen with your one meal, I am a fire worshiper, why must I Take Allah`s name?"

"You want to buy my deen at the cost of a mere meal."

This shocked Ibrahim (AS) who said there is only One Allah while this person wants to eat in the name of his fire. Not being able to tolerate this shirk Ibrahim (AS) asked him to leave. ALLAH immediately sent Wahi to Ibrahim (AS): "For the past ninety years this person has not taken My name at all, in spite of which I have been feeding him without fail, while you found it difficult to feed him just this one meal."

"Immaterial of whether he takes My name or not you cannot eat until you bring him back and make him happy."

I am not a religious person - but I condemn his actions and call the government to him harsh punishment to him. This is a democratic country and we should respect the sensitivities of the majority.

  43. Medical doctor Zakir Naik asked Nazim to start reading the correct books. I would like to ask Nazim to listen to the right people about Islam. What is Zakir Naik a medical doctor doing making money for his Peace TV in the name of promoting Islam?

When Nazim said he wanted to read books on other religions before deciding on a religion, Dr Zakir Naik did not know what to say. He attacked Nazim in a way that made him even more stupid. Of course people will need to taste whatever food that is available to decide on the best food. Student must be given a choice to read books that they like. Plus medical doctors will have to be questioned about the medicines they give. We have come to the state we are in because we were not allowed to ask any questions. May it be about religion, facts of life, politics, you name it.

Zakir Naik also said if you start asking so many questions to a medical doctor he will tell you to get out of the room. You can't ask so many questions as if you are the doctor. Well patients asks questions because they do not know not because they think they are doctors.

So get out of your moral high horse and stop acting like a God. You are not THE person and you DON"T KNOW ANYTHING. You failed the test the moment Nazim asked the question

  45. I call the government to give harsh punishment to Nazim so that it will be a lesson to anyone who tries to break our national unity. Say no to Salim and Hillath's call to provide freedom for homosexuals.

  47. First of all, let us all see what Ahmed Saleem HRC has said with regard to the apostate!

“I’m afraid of the reaction from the international community should we resort to harsh action,” he said. “I don’t think it would be in our interest – we have just been given a seat on the UN Human Rights Council. This is something we need to think seriously about before we start using harsh language.”

Not surprising though, those Kabalist associates seem to be angered, bothered and furious with anything Islamic while they dance to the drums of so called " HIGH POWERED BIG NAMES " shame on those!

However, I would agree with the guys who say "let Nizam choose his way". After all he himself will have to face the consequences in this world and the Hereafter very before the Alminghty Allah. But undoubtedly, his action has antagonised many Maldivians and left an adverse impact on our closely knitted society . In deed this is a harbinger of many of such stuff yet to come.

Thanks to all propogators of Islam, Salaf, Islamic Foundation and all for the hard work they are doing to salvage this our beloved nation from the shackles of treachrous kabalist associates.

Thanks! Up hold your duty to Allah

  48. It is not up to Nazim to decide if he is a muslim or not. It is up to the Maldivian Law which will dictate and decide his relegion. Even if Nazim says he is not a Muslim ... we shall tell him just to shut up ... it's not up to him to decide. Tell Nazim to just shut up and go to heaven. The government of Maldives has decided that all Maldivians will be Muslims, and thats final. I would appreciate if the concerned authorities and islamic institutes also adapt methods of forcing prayers, fasting and zakath etc. It would be easy for 3 or 4 Salaf boys to hold on to a struggling youth, and phisically force him to prostrate. After all its our responsibility to get every Maldivian to heaven.

  49. Some commenters accuse Nazim of "breaking national unity". What national unity are these people taking about!? Anyone who has not been under a rock for the past decade knows there is no unity on anything in this country. Has these commenters never seen a session of the Majlis on TV? Contrary to the accusations of these commenters Nazim has in fact united all the political parties who are all trying to be holier-than-thou in trying to denounce him!

These hypocrites do not value "national unity" when it comes to playing their political games. But the moment some ordinary person airs his views on religion he has to be sacrificed at tbe alter of "national unity"!

Nazim is a hero not only for being courageous enough to express his dissent in front of a hostile mass, but also because he has exposed the hypocrisy of those spouting "national unity" as something that must supersede all individual freedoms. He has also forced the society to face the facts about Maldivian religious identity. The real reason why so many are angry at him is because he has revealed their hypocrisy and also forced them to face the facts about non-Muslim Maldivians. They are angry that they can no longer hide under the cover of "100% Muslim Nation".
