PA membership drops to less than 3000

A political party membership report published by the Elections Commission (EC) shows that the membership of People’s Alliance (PA) has dropped to less than 3000.

The EC recently sent a bill to parliament that if passed, will mean any political party which does not have a minimum of 3000 members will dissolves by default.

The EC report, published on May 20, indicates that the PA now has 2986 members, 35 less than the previous report published on May 13.

President of the EC Fuad Thaufeeq said that after the bill is passed any political party with a membership of less than 3000 would be given a period of one year before it was disbanded.

He said that he did not know when the bill would be passed and implemented.

PA Registrar Mohamed Rasheed said the party had sent 250 membership forms to the EC which would take the membership number above 3000.

”We focus to maintain the membership at least at 3000,” Rasheed said. ”As we are in a coalition with the DRP we don’t do much work to increase the number of members.”

Rasheed said that people have always been resigning and joining the party.

”400 people may resign within a week,” he said, ”another week 800 people may join.”

The Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), led by Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, has the highest amount of members according to the EC report, ahead of the Maldivian Democratic Party MDP by 2036 members.

The DRP hada  total of 38,254 on the last report, which was 191 members less than the previous report.

MDP had 36,218 members in it, 1185 members more than the previous report.

The Jumhoory Party lead by Gasim ‘Buruma’ Ibrahim was the third largest political party with 6204 members.

  1. Hahha..where is Yamin Abdul Gayoom? Where is Dr.Waheed (Yameen's running mate!)

  2. Seems like Mass membership is the scale to weigh the performance and success of political parties in Maldives. DRP forced people to join by using their power when they were in government. Now MDP is doing the same. Who are genuine members and who are not is a mystery. We need responsible political parties, not mass memberships and internally corrupt parties.

That is so fake and seems so untrue!

  4. PA (Yameen's thugs) never ever had 3000 members! All these members were bought members! PA is party of thugs like DRP! I hope MDP will save itself from attraction of thugs into it too! Who is Yameen Abdul Gayoom without Gayoom?? NOTHING!! Yameen has no signifance infront of Maldivians..most Maldivians consider him the ring leader of street thugs and controller of biggest thiefs and corrupt people!! SAVE MDP AND MALDIVES FROM SUCH CHARACTERS!!!!

  5. It maybe very true cause there is a trade among parties to buy members. The reality is that there are people who change parties for small financial benefits. I don't say that all people r like that. So its possible that within few months you can see a certain person registered in almost all major parties who can offer something.

  6. What a golden opportunity for PA to join MDP.
    Dhonbiley said Yameen is ok.
So PA should join and we will see the clash of the titans in Maldives. lol

  7. Volatility of numbers: It sounds like the PA membership goes up and down like the price of tuna in the fish market..

A better argument from PA could have been the number of MPs per member of which the PA leads over DRP and MDP.

  8. There are islands with more than 3000 people living in them. These islands in their whole history would not have received state funds to the extent the government is funding the dubious Yamin party and other miniature parties. Where is the sense of proportion. When would Maldives come to senses and put money towards improving future of all citizens equally.

  9. Sell the membership to the highest bidding Party. "Go for auction" ---- and get the best price for your membership vote. sell your vote .... n later we can sell your souls too....

  10. Please, please Anni, please do not embrace Yameen, I mean, on a personal level you can befriend him or whatever, but for the sake of the Maldivian people I plead with you not to allow him to have power because he is a brutal, cruel, heartless tyrant

  11. All those who have criminal and corruption cases filed against them must join PA. This will save them from the courts in Maldives. Corrupt courts with highly corrupt judges are servants of PA leaders.

  12. Hmmm, if PA & Yameen were so insignificant, why have a topic related to them at all? And why the many comments? I've grown to realise is Politics is one heck of a dirty game. Game because most of these political figures & propagandists think that the citizens of Maldives are their pawns while they play chess! A shift here, a pull there, a tug here, a push there... The sad part is that we keep letting them, both knowingly & unawares. There is no shortage of those people who say "I just don't care & want nothing to do with politics" out loud in public & then continue working as secret, double agents, trying to either con the "big fish" or simply in the name of their own "security" in these turbulent times. It's like one vicious cycle.
So, where does that leave those few of us average folk who are genuinely honest, hard-working & wish to see a change only for the better? Whatever happened to old fashioned ethics & principles? what are we to do in these times when we can trust no one?
People, stop thinking about fattening your already thickened mid-sections & try to think about the future of our children FOR A CHANGE THAT IS WORTHY!
Now, if this doesn't inspire us to appeal & turn to God for guidance, I really don't know what could! 😉
