Parliament ceases to function, while HRCM calls on government to release MP Yameen

Parliamentary Speaker Abdulla Shahid this morning cancelled parliamentary sittings until the government releases MP Abdulla Yameen from MNDF “protection” on ‘Aarah’, the presidential retreat.

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has meanwhile issued a statement calling on the government to release Yameen from his ‘protection’ at Aarah.

“On July 15 the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) arrested Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and since then it has been five days and he has not been presented to court,” HRCM said in a statement.

“He is held in custody against article number 49 of the constitution,” the commission claimed.

“Although he was isolated for his own protection, violating article 49 is unconstitutional, and therefore the HRCM calls on the government to follow the constitution and release Yameen immediately.”

The statement cited article number 48(D), which states that any person arrested should be brought before a judge to determine the validity of the detention period, and claimed that defence forces did not follow the article.

“We note that the defence forces have not attended the criminal court and have ignored the court’s order to summon Yameen to court,” the statement added.

The MNDF told parliament in a letter read out in yesterday Yameen was not being held pending criminal investigation, but for his own “protection” based on “secret” information received on July 15.

In its statement, HRCM claimed that “as the Maldives is a country which has a infant democracy, the people of the Maldives and the government should uphold the constitution and democratic principles.”

The commission said that to ensure people’s confidence in a democratic system of government, it was important to establish a culture that respected human rights, justice, and equality in Maldivian society.

The MNDF maintains Yameen was taken to the Presidential retreat for his own protection and on his request.

However in a phone call with Minivan News, Yameen, who is accused by the government of corruption and treason, claimed the MNDF took him to the retreat forcibly in an attempt to cool the situation in Male’.

  2. how much did yameen gave the speaker. The majlis is paid 60,000 rufiyaa from the government budget. cancel all the majlis sessions just for one vote. who loses. are they working for the good of the people. if the majlis wants to put pressure on the government there will be other means. (may be they don't know all they know is the barbaric way of putting pressure on the government.) He is trying to stop the functioning of the majlis. people like Shaid should be behind bars.

  3. Ambassador Blake is coming all the way to Maldives to mediate. This raises the question of why India did not step in to mediate.

Would the opposition have preferred India as a mediator? I guess there is so much we do not know that is going behind the scenes..

  5. I seriously don't know why human rights commissioner get so political? He did a similar stunt on a "slave girl" when there was non, confirmed by police and other relevant authorities! The conclusion that I arrive is Human Rights Commissioner is a wants "attention" and doesn't like to get any displeasure from his "old" boss's family (Gayoom and his cronies). Otherwise I seriously don't see why he should call for immediate release..without holding talks with government on the ground of Yameen (Commander in chief of Street and drug thugs) solitary confinement. Why is Anti Corruption so silent?? We all heard their phone conversation between Yameen and Nazim that was leaked..and we know Nazim was talking to his boss..with subserviant tone! hehe..what a shame!! I seriously "need some Cash"!!

  7. "In its statement, HRCM claimed that “as the Maldives is a country which has a infant democracy, the people of the Maldives and the government should uphold the constitution and democratic principles.”

HRCM: Does it mean HUBRIS RIGHTS COMMISSION OF MALDIVES? If that is so they have all the rights to issue such statements. That is more logical and acceptable.

If H is for Human - and those humans they have to be worried about must be the the public and the nation as a whole and their future. Not the Corrupt Mafia guys. These institutions was not created under the constitution to be puppets of Corruption. In fact, they must respect the constitution and the rule of law and stop pretending they are unaware of the reality.

Yes, sure ... in fact they should include them to stick to those principles first.

  9. Saleem has started his usual blabbering soon after his name is sent to the Majilis again.

He is so sure he will be approved by the Opposition and made the President again.

Yameen is not arrested. He is isolated for his own safety as well as public security. He is not in prison but held in the island used by his brother, former President Gayoom.

Yameen is practically having a holiday and is quite happy with the sympathy he gets from all MDP-haters.

Keep him there. That would mean less youth will go to prison and spend their lifetime for having carried out Yameen's dirty orders.

There is no reason why MNDF should obey Judge Abdulla Mohamed order as YAMEEN IS NOT ARRESTED.

I'm hoping to see the X rated movie starring Judge Abdulla Mohamed.

  11. I don't know why HRCM is so excited about this!

    Yameen is not a criminal.
    Yameen is not arrested.
Yameen is simply protected by police.
Does the constitution say you cannot protect people?

And why are people jumping up and down because Yameen is not summoned to the criminal court?
    Is Yameena criminal?
    Or is he under arrest?
Yameen is not under arrest that he should be summoned to a court.
Why did the criminal court isuue a subponea in the first place?

And let me also add to the list...

    DRP- going wild in "Blues"
MDP- still obsessed with their "Yellow"
Judges- showing their true color "Blue"
    Public- stranded in confusion
    Hameed- Blue maniac

This Country is not about BLUE, YELLOW, RED, PURPLE separately and individually.

THIS NATION IS "GREEN RED WHITE" as one color and should be united.

Says: "Yameen must be release immediately.
    I support to HRCM statement."

"Free NOW" must be taken to Aaarah to stay with Yameen for a while. He is so jealous that it was not him enjoying the luxury of presidential retreat village. HRCM must issue a statement for his right to enjoy Aaarah as a gift and honor for his support for them.

    I support MNDF

  16. Do you guys have any idea of the torment, the pain and fear Yameen and his gangs had put so many ppl through? I once tried to be very kind to Yamin, and accidentally offended him, i WAS TERRIFIED FOR MONTHS, I ended up sick as a dog on anti-anxiety medication to ease the pain!. mY STORY IS NOT ALONE? How tragic, how deeply tragic a blow this is for those thousands who have suffered under the wrath of Yamin to hear this from the Human Rights comission! Yamin's punishment for his behaviour is that he gets to spend a week or more in absolute luxury and is praised as some kind of a heroic martyr for being in paradise. If thats the way you guys treat the corrupt, hey man I am the Father of corruption come and give me a holiday in paradise too! I also want to go to Aarah. He is being rewarded not punished, rewarded...this whole saga is sickkk

Then President Nasheed would have to say. "Sorry I will not stop. But you Junta's can shut up and stop equating a "SWORD" and a "PIGEON". 😉

Hameed, you are lost in a deep "BLUE" sea..;)

  20. To Hameed and all supporters of BLUE babe's ( in two meanings... "babe" & "bey' be")

I believe this is the turning point for our Country. The events of today shall be the history of tomorrow.

All those who support Yameen, J Nazim, Buruma, Dr H.Saeed & his puppet Jameel, Abdu Gazi, Abdulla Saeed & some amongst public misguided by them + VTV( Buruma ideology Channel), DhiTV ( the angry channel complaining for not getting license of terrestrial broadcasting- as the law for fresh licenses is stranded in parliament, yet blaming the whole thing on Government.) are none but people lost in the "BIG BLUE" Sea.

People are not gullible as thought by these individuals and groups. People are closely watching all the events and finally their judgment will be made peacefully with GOD's will but that will be painful for all those mentioned above.

As for the President and his Cabinet: People are watching the actions and are in great deal of agreement with their current work of "cleaning this nation from Idols of Worship"*. I believe they will continue this and I have more faith in Mr.President's courage and determination than a week before.
Mr.President, Sir, you are doing the right thing and please deliver to the people, the calmness and equality that we have been waiting for so long. GOD made the unthinkable(for most who were against you) happened for you for a reason. That is the reward for your good efforts for the sake of our people. I thank GOD for giving you such courage during the times of "ZERO tolerance regime" and now. May Almighty GOD help you with these efforts. No matter what others are planning, Almighty GOD is the best planer.

[* The Idols of Worship mentioned here are: Arrogance, Wealth, Corruption, Drugs, Excessive desires for Power & Fame, Deceptions, misleading the innocent public, etc that are idols of worship to those who dearly believes and find happiness in that.]

May Almighty GOD bless our nation with peace & tranquility and guide us to the right path.

  21. @Hameed, thank you for adding to the list.

    Opposition leader – kidnapped.
    Serves him right.

    Courts – ridiculed.
The institution of injustice is finally getting laughed at!. Bravo!

Cabinet – lead demonstrations that call for murder.
Frustrated civilians who have had enough of watching helplessly by as criminals who have bullied them for years get away by means of corrupt courts do have the right to scream bloody murder.

Oh... 😉 that's an easy thing... just follow Umar Naseer, Jagiya Nazim, Abdulla Shahid, Abdulla Saeed, Dr.Hassan Saeed, Buruma Qasim, and all those just hops on their bandwagon...

In fact Umar Naseer is crazy to go there, seems he is asking for that tonight at Artificial Beach....by getting a letter signed by their supporters.. These people are so wild in "Blues", "Purple", & "Red".....

  25. Yameen must free now. He deserve his basic human rights as other Maldivians albeit there are allegations about him. I am quite astounded about some Maldivians who have commented above and wonder how hypocritical they are. The constitution of Maldives and even the UN human rights declaration unequivocally states that;

    - Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state

    - Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Shame on you gullible MDP Maldivians
