Maldives “on the tip of a dark cloud of hatred”, warns Sheikh Fareed

Prominent religious scholar Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed has given a sermon denouncing Friday’s planned protest, on the grounds that “it will be the blood of fellow Muslim brothers flowing down the roads.”

Islam did not preach unrest and violence, Sheikh Fareed said, and it was not honoring Islam if Muslims should clash with Muslims in the name of protecting it.

He said that the Maldives was currently “on the tip of a dark cloud of hatred”, and warned about aggressive activities that might take place during the December 23 event, calling on people not to destroy property, or damage the sanctity and good name of another Muslim.

Sheikh Fareed referred to 2;11,12 of the Quran which states: ‘’ When it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “Why, we only Want to make peace!” Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.’’

According to Sheikh Fareed, Anas Radi allah Anha narrated that the Prophet [PBUH] said ‘’Be patient, there will come a time, where the time that comes after that time will be worse than the other, until you shall meet your god [judgement day].’’

He called not to give space for disputes and to try and make peace instead, and called for people to “protect our wives and children from danger rather than feeding wood to a burning fire.”

He said that everyone will have to be accountable to Allah, and reminded that there were two angels that keep writing all good and bad deeds including the words we say.

Sheikh Fareed said that this life was not eternal and that everyone has to believe that “we might have close our eyes for the last time at any moment.”

‘’Then comes the time you feel bad about how you lived and start crying, although you did not want to leave you had to. Then you will be amazed of the persons that come to question you. Indeed, with a strong voice they will question you,’’ Shaiekh Fareed said. ‘’The persons that encouraged you to destroy people’s property and to damage the good name of others will not be there.’’

He added that the deeds people committed in this world “will be the only thing they will have.”

Sheikh Fared further said it was regrettable to hear of the news that two Muslim groups were to confront with each other.

  1. thank you Fareed, BUT i highly question your intentions here, your motive here, because you sir have been in the forefront spreading this hatred all this time. either you have realized the peaceful islam, in which case i praise Allah OR you are seeking a piece of cake of attention given on religion these days in which case, may Allah guide you to right path;)

  3. Let us all do everything we can to keep this peaceful with the help of the police Inshallah. If we catch any trouble makers, we should hand take a picture of them and hand them over to the police immediately.

  5. All those who intend to create violence on the so-called protest planned to be held on December 23, 2011 are going to be MUNAAFGIQS (People who pretends to be good Muslims)

May Allah guide us to the right path and fail those who try to jeopardize the good life we have been living as Muslims.

  6. Fareed should be given the benefit of the doubt. He may genuinely not wish for a Maldivian version of the Taliban to rule Maldives. Let us tolerate his eccentricities with the cucumber.

  7. Strangely enough, this is the only moderate voice we've heard in the religious community. The sole voice of contradiction to Jamiyathul Salaf. So does that mean that the Islamic Foundation is now our only choice for moderation in Maldives?

  8. Congratulations Fareed.

IFM would surely get a financial boost from this stunt.

Not that anyone with half a brain would find this shocking. IFM has been catering to the MDP for quite a long time.

Nothing wrong there. We all have our affiliations. However you preach to the wrong sort of choir this time around. Your messages have no effect if it is in support of peace and unity. You were always the fire and brimstone sort of preacher. Ah well. Nasheed must really be desperate as some people claim.

  10. I commend Fareed’s statement. This is indeed the moderate voice. This may be good PR for some people in foreign circles and foreign media but I do not see this at all benefiting the Maldives. Extremists and those who are at the fringes will be pushed further to the right. If there is violence, the will have a good PR call for more recruitment and violent acts in the name of defending Islam. The Maldivian saying, it takes two hands to clap or something like it is valid here. I urge MDP (Anni) et al NOT to hold the counter demonstration on the same day (this provocation of violence is also an extremist in nature). Announce cancelation in the fear that there could be violence. We will support you and we will come to a counter demonstration on some other time in future. Take the high road; be better than the narrow minded folks.

  11. Dear Editor,

I have been following this wonderful preacher for sometime. His Quran recitation uploaded on Youtube is extremely beautiful. Have you got English lectures of this preacher? If you have, please email it to my email id.

    Thanks, Fugi

  12. nice speech pope, but the Maldivian community knows that you are one of the main characters who threw Maldives in to this current situation.

But now, it may be too late.

  16. Fareed is absolutely right. The end is nigh. Maldivians will destroy themselves long before global warming has had a chance to flood this place!

    RIP Maldives and its inhabitants...

  17. Could somebody see the problem with our the kaafir hoards comment here?
Even if Sheikh Fareed were to embrace atheism today and preach Dawkins, he will still get mocked and scoffed. Because the problem with kaafirs is that they cannot detach the person from the issue. For them the issue (islam) has long ceased to be an issue. For them its more important to shoot the messenger. Alhe mee dhogekae bunebala ekakuves?

  18. very uncool for him to rip off Amin didi - particularly when he is the anti-thesis of what Amin stood for.

  21. Salim Waheed, you should sit with Sheik Fareed. But I can guarantee you will not agree with him. You and people like you will support him now that he is agreeing with the government. But his views are even more extreme than the crowd that is going to gather on 23rd. And on another note, "Prominent religious scholar Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed" written by Ahmed Nazeer? Amazing. I bet you can find articles by Nazeer cursing Fareed and his IFM.

  22. I do lack words to express my feeling to the democracy and hypocrisy of this incident! But:

Preacher's preachings and the Politician's politics differing so much when it comes to the tailoring of their needs!

The government, Police and the Maldives National Defense Force should not allow these two protests occur at the same time.

I would second Sheikh Fareed this time even though he has his part in the foreplay of this event.

Muslims should be able to sit with Muslims in a crisis like this! They should talk, and then come to understandings!

If Salaf is not willing to sit and talk, on a national crisis like this, they have nothing for the nation, but their own and their alone beliefs which is now questionable!

  23. Subhanallah!

This is madness! The good Sheikh, a devout supporter of Sheikh Osama bin Laden the Muslim Lion Mujahid Leader (May Allah reward him with rivers of wine, boy servants and 72 virgins), has simply gone mad! Perhaps Jews are misleading him!

I demand him to stay silent on this issue! The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia would have cut out his tongue for such an action!

  24. the only hatred i sense from reading this article is from comments like the above person who writes in the name of sheikh imran. He or she or it is just mocking islam ranting about 72 virgins and wine etc. So this is a fight between those who love islam and those who spread hatred against islam. Nothing else!

  25. Government does not have to bribe one to talk in favour to them in religious issues. What the hell is wrong with you people? You think religion is like health insurance, transporation network or the GMR issue? Sick minded people. Unbelievable.

How can the government change the faith of the entire population by a law? Thats not going to happen. In every place, there are good and bad people. I wonder how your children would learn to accept people who are different from themselves.

  26. No one on earth now has the legitimacy to control and force faith on some one. Therefore either a president or a religious mullah is abstained from such authority. Religion is a divine order to humans how to live in peace and recognize (through an individual chosen by God) and understand the creation, if any one one is out of this law and order, then he is lost here and here after. Its the good will of people and a divine request to put people in order and guide but have no right to force.
you like it or now its like this....
