The Criminal Court has sentenced the owner of Sondo Born Beauty Care Salon, 64 year-old Abdul Latheef Ali of Henveiru Philadelphi in Male’, to four years in prison after finding him guilty of running a brothel and forcing three Thai women into prostitution.
Three Thai women – aged 21, 24 and 36 – testified in court that Latheef had forced them into prostitution after bringing them to the Maldives, ostentatiously to work as massage therapists.
Police raided the premises of Sonder Born Beauty Care Salon on 10 September 2012 in a special operation, and discovered a naked Maldivian man with a topless Thai woman inside a room in the house.
In a statement, police said a furth search of the premises revealed a supply of “tools used for sexual activities”.
Abdul Latheef brought the three Thai women into the Maldives through the sponsorship of a company called Asparagus Private Limited – a company also owned by Latheef – and put them work in the Sondo Born Beauty Care Salon, police said.
The three Thai women in their statement to police said they were brought to the Maldives to work as massage therapists but when they arrived Latheef had told them that their job description included having sex, and that if they refused to provide sexual services to customers they would be terminated from their job and sent back to their home country.
The Thai women told police that the customers who visited the salon paid at the counter first and then came inside and made another payment to the women, of which Abdul Latheef received a share.
Police said the Thai women had said they gave Abdul Latheef US$300 (MVR 4600) daily.
According to the women’s testimony, Abdul Latheef also handled the reception counter of the salon and was present during the police raid.
Police also said that when they searched the room where the Thai lady and Maldivian man was discovered, they found a large strash of condoms and pills used for sexual activities, and large amount of money.
The Criminal Court considered all these things as supporting evidence and found Abdul Latheef guilty of the crime.

Another example of a corrupt and broken judiciary! a light sentence of just 4 years in prison is a like a slap on the wrist for such a crime.
A few people are complexed as to how these people can get away with such evil even though Maldives has Shariah Law. Wouldn't the Religious system, the religious law create a much more moral society than say, England, America, Australia? So why is the opposite the case, why do the elite in Maldives live way less moral lives in general than the politicians elsewhere, how can this be possible in a one hundred percent Muslim country?
They misunderstand the paradox completely.
As I have said many times, the elite can live WAY WAY above the law BECAUSE of the Religious nature of the Law.
The Religious Law keeps the masses - the poor, in a state of fear because it threatens unjustly harsh punishments for moral failures which we are ALL guilty of – and uses the threat of eternal hell fire as well. The anxiety, the fear, that this creates amongst the peasentry renders them feeling incapable of standing up against the inequality, the injustice, they submit to it, and are told – it is ALLAH”S WILL as everything is ALLAH”S WILL. Therefore, the law renders the peasents passive, quite, non-resistant, and feeling unable to stand up against injustice because – after all, it is futile to resist ALLAH”S WILL, and, a sin to do so. So, thanks to this LAW, the elite are above the sense of “democratic accountability” which often works to reign in the greed, the hedonistic excess, the tyranny of the elite.
Many religious beliefs, such as the fear of eternal hell, the belief in imposing religion via the state, unjustly harsh punishments, belief that it is a sin to resist a ruler, and other beliefs, make it IMPOSSIBLE for JUSTICE to exist in a state.
It is clear that such beliefs are the products of the will to power of the elite, NOT the desire for Justice of the oppressed.

Islam allows slavery and concubinage and prohibiting what glorious omniscient magnificient munificient etc etc Allah had permitted is against Islam! *gasp* *clutches pearls*
I ask the Majlis to amend that anti-slavery clause and give this man his Islamic right to own and use slaves. This is a 100 percent Islamic state and we should follow Islamic law. Not kuffar Western laws.

Four years in prison for forced prostitution.
This is the state of our judiciary. Probably the ruling logic is based on the rights granted to own Jaariya's in sharia common law. Thus a light sentence. Btw most of these sitting judges would have been good patrons of sondo born beauty care saloon, they woudnt want to let down their mate Abdul Latheef.
The judiciary is plagued by stupid arbitrary rulings based on whim and patronage. The legal system gives the sitting judges leeway to base the ruling on sharia which is uncodified and heavily subject to interpretation.
What more can be said look at the presidential candidates and their pledges no one addresses this issue. It isn't debated in the parliament either. This has also to do with the fact that the majority of the populace even does not see this as a issue, most Maldivians don't have an altruistic streak in them. It's each and their family for themselves sometimes it's you to yourself. No sense of society.
