India today extended a US$100 million standby credit facility to the Maldives in support of economic stability. India has agreed to assist developing the country’s banking and financial infrastructure and capacity building.
“Bilateral cooperation between India and Maldives has been on a high growth trajectory in recent times,” said India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “We are working together on increasing connectivity and closer economic cooperation. These efforts are bearing fruit.”
In a signing ceremony at the President’s Office this morning, the two governments signed five agreements including a Memorandum of Understanding for international terrorism, drug trafficking, disaster management and coastal security; a program of cooperation between 2012 and 2015; and India’s commitment to renovate Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
A Framework Agreement on Cooperation for Development outlined a joint effort to support the growth of trade and investment, food security, fisheries development, tourism, transportation, information technology, renewable energy, communications and connectivity.
“These agreements have a number of advantages to both countries,” said President Mohamed Nasheed. “India’s contributions in these agreements goes a long way to the Maldives’ development.”
The heads of state announced their shared interest in opening passenger and cargo ferry services between Cochin and Male as soon as possible. The President said India would examining the project, and he hoped that it would support the development of North Kulhudhuffushi port.
Prime Minister Singh congratulated the Maldives on “an extremely successful SAARC Summit,” and expressed confidence in President Nasheed’s new role as SAARC chairman. “The pace of our activities will gather even greater momentum,” he said.
The President thanked the Prime Minister for his “moral and other support in holding and concluding the summit with such success.”
Following the ceremony, Prime Minister Singh delivered the first parliamentary address by a foreign head of state in the Maldives.

President Nasheed proved that Gayoom is a big mouth without any substance. He made all Maldivians proud to be a Maldivian. The world endorsed a new beginning in the Maldives. The leaders were happy to see a flourishing democracy,
If this summit were held under Gayoom it would another give away to Universal Champa and Deen. Gayoom will buy more foreign assets and allow his cronies to make millions. We are proud the world leaders refused even to mention Gayoom's name. We are happy to see the back of Gayoom.

So sad that so many opposition MP's boycotted the SAARC summit in Addu, with so much being invested in it, would have been nice to see a full conference centre.
Not turning up meant no-one else could fill the seats, maybe they could say when they are going to be missing from the Majlis and others could also take their seats there if they are not up the duty. Could this simply have been jealousy?
Also when meeting a head of state, it its customary to bow the head slightly out of respect and keep good eye contact, noticed a few that need some lessons.
All in all a great showcase from Maldives officialdom with a few that could and should do better.

i dont support this governments foreign policy a bit. for a tiny country like maldives its better to be equally friendly with everybody- the chinese, indians, americans, pakistanis, iranians, etc. the policy of non-alignment will be best.

This could well cause a shift in the political landscape in favor of Nasheed in the next election. What with even more "flats" that could be presented to the electorate as the spoils of a war won with sheer capability and efficiency against a bitter opposition and an uncharitable (world)economic outlook. However, one wonders what we have done or have to do to deserve such generosity from the Indians.
The policy of non-alignment is a failed notion. It's a remnant of the Cold War. There's no need to resurrect. We should form deep alliances with whoever and whenever (for mutual benefit).
No one seems to mention the blooming budget deficit and it's ever increasing financing from bilateral loans. In summary, the Maldivian government has been bailed out several times recently by India and Sri Lanka, for example.
This is NOT a sustained way to build a better future for the country. The government has failed to get to grips with the economy and its own ridiculously high expenditure. As we all know, it's the government inability to control its own expenditure that will cripple the economy further.
There's not a whole lot of differnece between what the present government is doing and what Gayyoom did in the last years of his regime. Instead of priting moneny, the present regime is issuing T-bills. These are being bought by banks and governments such as India. In order to repay these T-bills, we are taking ever more loans. If this doesn't sound like the Greek tragedy (the present Greek Euro tragedy), then I don't know what will!

Nawaz Sharif addressed the Parliament after opening the current Parliament building. So if Manmoham Singh is a head of state, so was Nawaz Sharif.
Therefore the correct wording would be "the first parliamentary address by a foreign head of state in the Maldives , that was approved by Parliament".
I support the Adduan on this.
How can we prioritize the economy if Minivan and PPM work together to keep religion at the forefront while President Nasheed runs around gifting borrowed progress for votes.
