Woman sentenced to three months prison for torturing baby

A woman has been sentenced to three months prison for torturing her one and a half month old child by burning it with cigarettes, reports Haveeru.

The newspaper reported that the woman, identified as Aiminath Shifna of Male’, admitted to the crime during the police investigation.

the child was injured by cigarette burns, which Shifna had agreed in the investigation that she did it, according to haveeru.

VTV presenter injured in Dhaka

A Villa TV (VTV) journalist has broken her wrist after the scaffolding she was filming on collapsed.

Aishath Usvathu was part of a VTV team broadcasting the SAAF games at Bangladesh.

According to Haveeru, Usvathu is being treated at the Scare Hospital in Dhaka and will soon be transfered to Apollo Hospital in Dhaka.

An Afghanistan cameraman who was also with Usvathu was injured.

Boat capsizes in Hithadhoo

A 38 year-old man is being treated at Hithadhoo regional hospital after his row boat capsized and he swallowed a lot of seawater.

The incident occurred at the entrance to the Hithadhoo harbour at around 5.15 pm.

Police report that two men were on board the 15 foot boat when a large wave caused the boat to capsize.

Both men were rescued by a passing dhoni. Police report that man’s condition is now stable.

Police find drugs hidden in motorbike shock absorbers

Police have arrested a pair of men in possession of two packets of suspected narcotics.

Police received reports that people were transporting drugs on a boat travelling from Male’ to islands in Huvadhoo Atoll.

Police from Gaaf Alifu Vilingili conducted an operation and found the drugs while the vessel was moored in the Gaafu Alifu Nilhandhoo harbor.

Police found the drugs hidden in the shock absorbers of a motorbike on the boat.

The two men arrested are Ziraaru Saeed, 26, Gaafu Alifu Dhandhoo, Hefinaaz and Shamoodh Adam, 26, of Unimaage of the same island.

The drug enforcement department and Vilingili police are investigating the case

MDP opens new office at Thoddu

MDP has opened a new office on the island of Thoddu in North Ari Atoll, reports Manadhoolive.

Manadhoolive reported that the new office was opened by the president’s special envoy Ibrahim Hussein Zaki.

Many MDP MPs and government ministers attended this ceremony, the first time such an event has been held by MDP on Thoddu.

Islamic ministry reiterates ban on trading liquor on inhabited islands

Ministry of Islamic Affairs Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Baari has restated that the ministry will never support the provision of liquor licenses on inhabited islands.

Baari’s comment comes as Miadhu reports that senior officials at Holiday Inn are expecting a license to be approved “next month”.

Miadhu claimed several NGOs against the ban were preparing for public demonstrations if the license was granted.

STO cargo ship held in Indian port

A cargo ship belonging the State Trading Organisation (STO) is being held in an Indian port.

The ship was loaded with 44,000 sacks of rice to be brought to Male’.

Ismail Shakir, director general for the ministry of economic development said “The report we have received from the STO is that the ship is being held because the rice they got was not meant to be exported.”

Ismail Sadiq of STO confirmed the report. “The ship belongs to us and so does the rice.”

Sadiq also reassured the public that “The supply of rice will not be affected by this incident.”

‘Jinni’ sold out, more shows planned

Horror movie ‘Jinni’, a local Dhivehi film showing at Olympus Cinema, has sold out five shows with tickets for a further five on sale.

The movie premiered on Wednesday to many positive reviews.

The movie is based on a true story and a novel by Binmaa Ibrahim Waheed, and was shot in Baa Kamadhoo featuring Ali Seezan, Mariyam Afeefa and Amira Ismail.

Ali Fulhu Thuttu Foundation announces scholarship offers

Ali Fulhu Thuttu Foundation has announced scholarship offers in 2010 for students who have completed IGCSE, GCSE and SSC exams in 2009.

Applications are open to those who have Maldivian citizenship and were born between 1991 and 1993. Applications must have completed GCSE, IGCSE and SSC and passed at least seven subjects.

Those selected will have the opportunity to represent the Maldives at colleges in India, Norway, Italy, Canada or the USA. The deadline for application is 15 February 2010 at 2:30 pm.

Since 2000, twenty-six Maldivians had completed the international baccalaureate diploma through the Ali Fulhu Thuthu Foundation’s United World College Scholarship Program.
