India has “moral obligation to safeguard democracy” in the Maldives, Jameel tells PTI

India has a moral obligation to safeguard democracy in the Maldives, Home Minister Mohamed Jameel has told the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Jameel said it would be a blow to India if the nascent democracy in Maldives failed to live up to its promises, PTI reported.

“It will be a moral obligation on the part of India to see that democracy is sustained at Maldives, and if not it will be a blow to India as well as it the closest ally to our country,” Jameel told PTI, thanking
Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai for brokering the roadmap negotiations.

Several political parties in the talks had accused India of interference in Maldivian internal affairs.

  2. Yes . True. This is one more example of the unreliability of our new government. Every two days Dr. Jameel keeps on changing his stand. For two years he spoke against India and against GMR. Then after the coup he thanked India for supporting the new government. Then in the all party rally and on 22 february he said against India's intervention. Yesterday he said against India. Now he says something different. Why was the Indian Foreign Secretary offended in the All party talks?

I am not from MDP, but our country only will be the ultimate loser if leaders like Jameel continue offending Indian government, who have supported our country in many difficult situations.

  8. Dear Maldivian friends, Be untied putting aside your political agendas. Country comes first and next politics or whatsoever. Resolve differences yourselves though discussions without giving in India or another country to interfere into your internal affairs. India can never make Maldives one of their states (they may like though) but will certainly handle and control you economically and politically if you pave the way for them. India tried to poke their nose into the affairs of Sri Lanka too but eventually learnt bitter lessons. They will throw money but soon you’ll realize that you are caught in a trap. Let’s learn to stand on our own feet and pull our own burden.

  9. @ A Sri Lankan
Shouldn't you be putting your own house in order before lecturing others?
India has no intention of making Maldives or any other backward islamic state 'one of their states'.....any more than we would like to make Somalia or Pakistan (or Sri Lanka) one of our states?
Do you think we are stupid??
You need to solve the political mess of Northern Sri Lanka.....till than just shut it OK??
One last thing.....please don't make a laughing stock of yourselves by comparing yourselves with India.
