Comment: Extremism threatens our economy

We’ve heard in recent news government officials referring to rising fear of Islamic extremism in the Maldives.

We’ve heard about children not being vaccinated or not being sent to school in the name of religion; women being provided with a single bucket of water for the day, again in the respect of religious norms; children being restricted from music and other types of art; male children being forced to wear trousers shin high; schools threatened for asking male children to shave their beards; the classifying of many immaterial matters outright haraam such as smoking, watching movies or cartoons (Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse), singing, playing or listening to music, women travelling of women without a husband or family member, the showing of hair or wearing of perfume by women; or news and blogs promoting genital mutilation of females.

Another serious threat is the increased preaching of hatred against the west. The west (the majority of whom are understood to be Christians or Jews) is portrayed as the singular prime threat to the religious stability of the country.

This is a paramount danger to our economy given our dependence on foreign money. We should keep in mind that an act such as the one that happened at Sultans Park a few years ago could cripple our economy, slashing our foreign income.

Currently, the government is committing the Maldives to large contracts with foreign nations, with majority populations of Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and others. The Maldives is not self-sufficient and therefore we are at the mercy of other nations who are willing to ally with us and help us bear fruit. We cannot afford to live on the annual ration of a few tonnes of Saudi dates.

During recent years, many industries and public services are being capitalised on foreign investments. At such a time, how can we even allow the thought to draw a religious boundary around ourselves? We have been selling liquor and allowing illicit sex on all our resorts for almost 40 years because we cannot let religious boundaries starve us to death.

Our main politico-religious party is Adaalath Party, who also has its presence in the government sphere, ruling the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. They are assigned the responsibility of upholding the religion of the country – Islam – with a reported US$16 million budget.

Adaalath recently held one of their statutory meetings at a prominent public space (Alimas Stage). The whole meeting was aired live on Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation’s TV channel, MNBC one. The station is well known for its pro-government programming.

I was watching intently one of the speeches of this meeting. I found it really distasteful and offensive, to hear one of the famous preachers in the country, Sheikh Ilyas, known for being arrogant and blunt about religious statements.

He was saying that Muslims should not trust Christians or Jews in any way for they are not reliable on their word. He went on to say that any agreement made by them would never be kept. He mocked human rights and women’s rights as tools used to evade Islamic prudence. Every now and then he raised a copy of Quran above his head and said that he was presenting the word of God.

It is hard to imagine why the government, on one hand, is acknowledging the spreading extremism in the country, while at the same time is assigning public funds for the spreading of such extreme and radical ideologies.

The reason is that it is constitutional for the government to uphold and strengthen Islam as the religion of the country. And the government fulfils this part very smoothly: sets up a specific Ministry (the first religious ministry of the country), puts the leading religious political group in charge, and assigns a significant chunk of budget for their purpose.

Here is something the Ministry of Islamic Affairs published on their website (in local language), followed by a translation (by a blogger) during the Haiti disaster:

“Are there any Muslims in Haiti? Do we have to gain wisdom from this [disaster]? Haiti is a caribbean island nation, located not far from America. A certain number of Muslims live there. It is reported that they are not good people. There is no doubt about this; such earth quakes are moral lessons for everyone. Such [disasters] are caused by God because of the actions of mankind.”

Now, the public is at a loss for words. Those who are assigned the responsibility of upholding and strengthening Islam in the country, are advocating against the government’s policies and also promoting extremism. They are outright in saying that no deals should be made with infidels (such as Christians or Jews, who are not trustworthy as per God). They mock human rights and women’s rights in public.

It doesn’t take one to wonder, why this could happen? Why is the government apologetic about growing extremism but still allowing such things to preached in the public? Is our government crippled from doing anything about this?

Firstly, the Islamic Ministry was a promise the ruling party made during the elections. Protecting Islam was one of the major five promises of the ‘Other Maldives’ campaign. Since Adaalath sided with the MDP during the coalition to overthrow Gayoom’s dictatorship, MDP duly handed the reigns of the ministry to Adaalath. On top of this, our constitution demands our government promote and strengthen Islam. As such the government is carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

Our constitution also says that Sharia is based on the Quran and those findings, judgments and rulings concurred by the majority of religious scholars. When the majority of the leading scholars of the country concur on hatred against Christians, Jews and other infidels, backed up by our Constitution, what should the government do instead of sleeping with the enemy? I think the government should change their partner, before its too late.

  3. I agree 100% of what Sheikh Ilyas stated and also the statement on the Haiti disaster. It seems the writer has no knowledge on Islamic History about the first four Khilafah of Islam. Most likely he does not have any knowledge of the life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The one who remembers Allah and the one who does not remember Allah is like the difference between the living and the dead”

So you see, being born a Muslim does not guarantee us anything. Nor calling ourselves by Muslim names gives us any reward. It is all about Iman (faith) in your Creator, who only created us to worship Him primarily and establish His law in this world. So you see again, there is a big difference in the way of thinking of an actual Believer who fears his Creator compared to one that tries to enjoy life first before thinking of his Creator. The believers are not worried about the blame they might get from people with weak faith. Nor are the scared about being labeled as extremist. Their goal is not to please another human being, it is to please his Creator and raise the words of Allah (the Almighty).

Allah swt says in the Quran “Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful Message in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, (yet) repeating (its teaching in various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah's praises. Such is the guidance of Allah. He guides therewith whom He pleases, but such as Allah leaves to stray, can have none to guide.(39:23)

Hence the ones that are guided are happy enough knowing that they are guided while many are still going astray. So as individuals we should firstly be spending our time thinking if we are really guided or astray.

    Allah swt says
“Fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith”. (2:24)

    Also the Prophet (pbuh) said:
"None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves his children, his
    parents, and all people."

How many of us really loves the Prophet (pbuh) more than their parents and children? Can you imagine how hard this level of faith is? That is the goal that a believer aims for. When you love the Prophet (pbuh) before your own family, it will change you in every aspect of life. It will give you patience with your loved ones like you never had before and automatically treat other Muslims with honesty and love. The problems in society comes from those that follow cultures or ways of life which allows abuse of your loved ones or drinking alcohol and other social ills.

If you would like to look at it in an economical point of view. We know that some countries which does not like the US have talked about trading in difference currencies. Again how did we end up trading in US currency? Have the writer researched in this? Was the Ottoman Empire dealing in US Currency when it was established? There was much bloodshed and innocent killings if you look at either the British or American history. Read books written by their own writers.

Also currently Western economy is the most unstable economy with one crises after another, while the middle east economies are slowly rising to dominate every aspect of economical investment in Europe and Asia. From English Football to Tourism in Asia, the middle east market is the fastest growing investors and biggest high end travelers. Ofcourse Maldives does not see this because they are stuck backwards while countries like Malaysia is now looking towards Middle East investment for their new stock market that would be based in the center of KL and all Western and Asian banks are running.. or more like sprinting to get a share of Islamic banking which they see as more profitable compared to Commercial (non-islamic) banking. Every year Malaysia is getting nearly the same amount of tourists just from the middle east that Maldives is getting from the whole world. Why do they not come to Maldives? Again because their is some kind of backward assumption stuck into peoples head that Alcohol is what drives tourism. There are now many Islamic hotels in Malaysia and other countries managed by Malaysian hotel owners such as Holiday Villa and a few others.

"so now can you see why in islam wemon are not allowed to go out without a mahram"

    NO I DONT!

So women are raped by men, hence women should stay at home (or accompany with mahram). Why is it that the men(the lusty gender) are allowed to rein free in the streets, but the women (victims) are locked up or have to be with mahram. Shouldnt it actually penalise the men?
Men should not be allowed outside without wife or sister/daughter! Why should the victimized race suffer?

It reflects the interpretation of the male dominant arab culture at that time. Nothing more.

  5. @Mohamed.

You probably dont realise how WRONG you are. It was the so called 'western' countries that saved us during the Tsunami in 2004, and they still contribute a sizable net worth to our GDP.

I also do not think think a mythical deity would intervene to save us from a natural disaster. It sounds something out of a story book. AND strategically speaking, most our our allies are non-muslim countries.

  12. @MuadMZ,

It may well be a wrath from god, but who in this current day can specifically say that it is so in a positive sense? I mean how does Ilyas know that it was specifically that? He can point to historical known cases as evidenced from Quran and Hadith, but Haiti disaster how does he know for sure? Then what about earthquake in Pakistan? or continous tornadoes in Bangladesh? or continous earthquakes in indonesia area? There are various geological and climatic reasons for those too.

The US dollar being a reserve currency was part historical coincidence, US military might and institutional infrastructure of US. The moment other countries lose confidence in USD it will be replaced. Ofcourse US government won't let go of it easily. All empires (including Ottoman Empire) fell because of debt and currency problems. Until mid 1800s, Ottoman Empire did quite well, but taxation alone could not fund its wars, so paper currency and debt financing was introduced. This pattern is evident in almost all empires. The state cannot forever finance their war efforts. This applies to Ottoman too. And all empires create bloodshed. America was founded by revolting against the then British King. Much bloodshed yes, but they fought for independence. You can see bloodshed in the history of most countries, including Saudi Arabia too.

You say western economies are fragile, while middle eastern ones are slowly rising. But the western economies and the middle eastern economies are similarly capitalistic as well. Tell me, what is so different in middle east economy wise? It is the west who brings the technology and know how to drill the oil! Asian countries provide the labour. What do the arabs do? The moment the oil runs out, they will be in much trouble if they do not diversify. Talking of oil, Saudi Arabia is the single biggest middle eastern country who is actually helping the (the so called evil western) US maintain its dollar's status as international reserve currency.

Middle eastern countries such as UAE grow and prosper why? Due to the same capitalistic system as the west. Economic freedom and property rights. Islam is a very much a capitalistic system, though some would like to portray it otherwise.

Its funny you mentioned Islamic Banks being more profitable than conventional (who earn hefty profits with interests, but islamic banks are even more profitable according to you). The so called islamic banks does (in murabaha instruments) almost exactly what conventional banks does, including earning interests, except that they call it surcharge, admin fee, trade profit or something. The other main form of risk sharing called mudaraba is very similar to venture capital.

  13. lol @ Mohamed

If you think we can survive without these "western" friends, then I THINK you should try going to the government, and protesting for the fact that we the Maldives remain "friends" with the Western world. Why don't you convince the president to cut off all contact with our "Western Friends".

This is....if you think you, Baaree, Ilyas and people like the suicide bomber Ali Jaleel can operate this country. Unlike your masters in Afghanistan, I wonder if you can grow opium on these islands. Maybe that will replace tourism and fishing. Drug trade. Wahhabi number one source of income.

Wahhabis can cry all they want, but this country is changing. More rational people are coming out, and even more are realizing what you and your cult are upto. We did well for a 1000 years without Wahhabism, and we will do it for even more without it.

    And @ Warned

So, why don't you go to the nearest resort, or just a nearby embassy or Holiday Inn in Male, and kill all the Christians and Jews there? I think your Wahhabi friends can supply you with all the explosives needed for a suicide jacket or something right? Because your whole family currently relies on these "Christians" and "Jews" to not live in starvation.

  14. People like Muad MZ really know how to push the hypocrite mentality beyond.

Case in point: This person agrees with with what Ilyas had to say about distrusting Christians and Jews and about the Haiti disaster while trusting a technology that is a western creation to illustrate his kind of hypocrisy. Namely the internet, this wordpress newsite and the database and server that runs it.

This applies to Ilyas as well, whose speech was broadcast using technology created by the west (even at its most fundamental level). Why was Ilyas trusting western made equipment?

Ilyas and this Muad MZ must resort to more trustworthy methods of communication such as handwritten letters and screaming from the top of a minaret lest their hypocrisy be judged by people who see through their charade.

For people like Muad MZ and Ilyas their delusion clearly clouds their vision and thought. And when people like me tell them to crawl back to the 7th century cave from where they emerged recently (and to take their camels with them) they get pissed and start blabbing some incoherent nonsense using western technological creations no less.

    As we shall see soon.

    LOL!

  15. I would like to know what qualification does Ilyas or so called Sheikh has and how is he given this sheikh? If we must know Islamic scholars need to get good grasp of Quran, Figh, etc with other matters and need to study and do research for many years just like any other education or knowledge and more so, in the case of religion. First of all when someone is preaching in public I would like to know the qualification and his credentials. The person's background must be exposed and open to public so that everyone knows how credible he/she is and beside the Quran is an open book and for everyone. Everyone must read, understand and apply it and no one has any right neither claims on it or in its understanding. So Scholars understanding and interpretation must be analyses evaluated and criticized and of course can be rejected as well. So no scholar is above the Quran and god’s words are clear for all those who read it and want to understand it and it is for everyone.

  16. @ Mohamed,
Isn't it interesting that you despise the West when Allah has given more military and economic power to the West. You talk about natural disasters while the majority of those killed in the strongest tsunami of recent times were Muslims. You mentioned starvation when comparatively more men, women and children in Muslim countries die of disease and starvation.

  18. Good Article

We all Maldivians have to do something with Adaalath and Salaf or they will bring down the country to the cave men days. Ilyas, Majeed, Shaheem and Fareed use all the gadgets of the west and ironically blame them for making and selling them. I can see “the other Maldives” in next 3 years with camels on the road, stoning women daily at artificial beach, milking cows and goats at every house, each man will have 4 wives and hundreds of children, ninjas all over the country, tents at new harbor, fighting wars with swords and shields, etc etc

MDP is stuck with this group and they can’t do anything about it. Leave this country before it’s not too late.

I agree. Problem is that despite being educated & modern, people take religion seriously rather too seriously. Please, please friends, today religion is taking care of his wife, children and aged parents. Giving his children good education, making them good person and citizen; helping others at the time of need. This is religion - give it whatever name U want.

  20. a big misconception is here being discussed. That the West somehow invented technology.. gadgets etc. This is a very uneducated take of the issue. The fact is that The West did not 'invent' technology or science or any such thing. Just because western countries have more modern industrial scientific infrastructure does not mean they 'invented' science. Economic progress just made it possible for them to use industrial/scientific facilities more than other countries. Saying the West invented gadgets is like the white man invented science. A very jaahilu visnun.

  22. i mentioned once in another article about something to ponder for those like Mohammed in the first comment:

this is not a criticism, but an observation; most of these young men, extreme or otherwise in the islamic world grow up with the view islam is the best. islam sees itself as most perfect expression of god’s monotheistic massage. if i were to put it in computer terms, it sees itself as god’s 3.0, it seems christianity as God’s 2.0, sees judaism as god’s 1.0 and hindhuism as 0.0.
and i think part of the dissonance when they go America or europe, is that in their identity they have the most perfect system, but in real life, their countries are economically behind, in terms of education behind, health care behind and there’s real cognitive dissonance there. If i’ve got the best operating system , why am i behind? and i think that produces lot of rage in some young muslim men. some express these anger with xenophobia and hatred towards west or some extreme acts of terror.
but if you think about it, their hatred, if you dig really deep and see, its actually about how much these people really hate about their own govt, their own religion who keep them down, repressed and behind.

Just a thought for few here who is talking about western culture and values..

  23. Words almost fail me. Haitians were punished for not being Muslim? So,what about Indonesians (Muslim victims of the tsunami)? Oh, I guess they were the WRONG kind of Muslims, or were not GOOD enough Muslims. Please do not allow perversion of the Muslim religion to drag you all back into the middle ages. If this extremism spreads, you will wave goodbye to your tourist income, especially as it comes after the Vilu Reef fiasco.

  24. Dear waleed
Did i say Fareed invented science? all i am saying is do not generalize falsely and argue on issues where there is no issue. What about the millions of easterners who are working in western countries? The Indians, The Japanese, Chinese? Remember our own scientist Dr. Ugail? What about their contribution to science? Does the fact that they are easterners personally make them any western because their work is based in a western country where there is suitable infrastructure for their work?

A country by itself does not 'produce' infrastructure or invent anything. Its the people who invent, innovate and make things work. Now tell me the white man invented science and technology and then i will stop.

  25. @jambe 2 muslim nobel prizes. 160 jewish people have nobel prizes in science. extremists contribution to science is only as a target for testing modern weapons. i suppose that counts for something. so, the white men invented all science and technology. god bless him.

  26. dear earthling.
Here is a point to ponder.
Most (which means all) 'muslims' countries are lacking not because of islam but because they do not follow islam. Now tell me where did islam sanction kingdom? The saudis have a royal family >3000 in number now who are paid a 'pocket money' of 14000$ or more per month. Now tell me which tradition of the prophet allowed this? Just because somebody speaks arabic does not make him a better muslim. The fact of the matter is that humanity has given up on religion collectively. Although there are individuals and small groups trying to live up the religion, the vast majority of humanity has give up on religion. So there is no problem with islam. Islam is version 4.0 but its the hardware that needs upgrade now to support the os.

read about the Nobel? who is Nobel and what is he associated with? Pls make an effort to educate yourself.
now i will be charitable to you. i will go along with your assumption that Nobel signifies the epitome of success in some form of academic exercise. Now the fact that Muslims (collectively) have fewer names in top positions of achievement in science is not caused by Islam. Do you know the first verse in quruan commanded to read, to learn to excel in knowledge. So it was not Islam that hindered the path of knowledge. But rather abandonment of Islamic values. As for jews, they have been persecuted for years and years and they just learned their lesson the hard way and understood that they can only free themselves by empowerment. so they not only learned but fostered the culture to learn, they made huge sacrifices to sponsor education and economic posturing.
Remember the gold sword Saddam made for his son as a birthday gift? That is the kind of extravagance which deprived the men of umma their chance to rise and shine in the academia. extravagance and corruption not islam.

  28. Hats off! Very good Article indeed. Nazim has portrayed Extremism from the Political perspective. From a socio-political perspective things are much different and frightening. As we have seen from history, the only thing necessary for evil to flourish, is for good and powerful people to do nothing. Adhaalath is Politicizing Islam. No doubt about that. Using and manipulating the government to fulfill its agenda. Indoctrinating the population by infusing fear and uncertainty, hate and mistrust. They must be stopped and they must be stopped now if we are to avoid an ISLAMIC REVOLUTION. We may become a small Pakistan by 2015.

  30. Knowledge is of two kinds, we know a subject ourselves or we know where we can find information on it.

Islam, as other religions, is a human construct, and a very contradictory one. People used to worship the Sun god, the wind god... Some have the courage to question things and got some answers without god in them. An example is Evolution. Darwin used to believe in god, but as he grow older gave up the whole idea of god because it does not make sense. Where is the evidence that god is somewhere? Religion was needed to give people a moral code. A kind of control tool for the masses.

Nowadays, we understand that it is very moral to mutilate little girls' and boys' genitals and there are muslims countries that stopped doing such barbaric things.

To be a kind and loving human being one does not need to believe in gods, I do not care which god.

    Good bye

  31. Guys. Think for a while. Just think. With your brains and not your dick head.

There are so many things slashing and ripping apart any religious jumbo jumbo.
1:why haven't any Muslim nation prospered? The best ones are in middle east and they are not following islam as was preached. By miles n miles way off!
2:tsunamis, typhoons, etc: as much as in America, it happens in 5 on earth. 2 eyes, brain, male-female, sex, life span. Etc. Many common traits. Why should man b different to have a god to bow to, a heaven to go to, a life that is an examination? No. U live your life here, and u fxxxing die. That's it.
4:if god exists and wanted to straighten bad guys, he wud send messengers now. The bad things that happened in middle east 1500 years ago, looks like a party, compared to the genocides, butchering, selfishness, utter destruction, humans are doing to each other.
5: if god really wanted to straighten humanity, he would not ask his messengers, he would just align a few DNA strands, and we wud not be capable of thinking anything bad.
6: Arabs wud push their agenda, of hajj tourism, language as divine. For their selfish benefits.

Sometimes I feel the worst day of Maldivian history is the day abul barakath set foot here.

  32. All of you denouncing this article dont really get the point of it.

This article doesnt denounce islam in any way! It tries to remind us of its core value!

Of course Haiti didnt happen because of a few 'bad' muslims. What about all the good other human beings there, muslim or not. It is bordering on sociopathy to say that millions are displaced and sick from the outbreak of cholera and starvation because of the misdeeds of a few. This article also NEVER claims all power rests with wetsern countries like the first comment suggests. It just practically outlines where most of the maldives monetary funds come from (you know, the stuff you BUY food with).

'Women are the twin halves of men, and should be treated so', says the Prophet.

We cannot waste our time arguing semantics whilst the society suffers. A true muslim will see what problems exist, where they come from, and how they can be solved.

The Prophet says ' shall I not inform you of a task more useful than fasting, prayer and alms? Making peace with one another'

So what in the world are we waiting for.

  36. Hi,

What is important - humanity or Islam? If Islam, then what was there before Islam. Were people not happy, smiling, laughing before the onset of Islam? What change our religion has brought in this world? We Muslims have this tendency of giving too much importance to our religion (without understanding even 10% of it) and giving too much importance to now-a-days (flawed) Preachers.

None of them says that with time, everything changes. Old thing dies and new things (and ideas) comes up. But for some reason, these Preachers do not want things to change in Muslim World - why, why, why.

I wonder why the Islamic ministry did not issue a 'helping hand' in the form a denunciation, claiming that it happened as God's wrath, for not being Muslim.

But yes, a few Maldivians were in the area as well. May be that is the reason for the delay in the news report by the ministry.

  39. Hi,

God is Supreme - No question about it. But I will again ask: What is important - humans (humanity)? or Religion (any religion, including Islam)? Criticize me if U want for this. But go to Gulf countries and see for yourself what type of life they (Arabs) lead and how true Muslims they are. I think, we should send a delegation comprising of Zakir Naik, Bilal Philip and our own AP, JUS, IFM to lecture the Arabs for "reforming" them. Trust me - all these reformers will vanish from earth.

God is always kind. He has love, compassion and kindness. But we humans have to change with time. See around you - to understand.

so are you assuming islam is inherently alien from humane values? that islam is by nature inhumane? that middle easterners are the embodiment of islamic values?

I can understand you very well.

But the question to ask you is : why are you trying to make the Islamists understand or even to contemplate the possibility of a variation of their thoughts?

I would not try. You will get scoffed at, booed, and even label you crazy.

My suggestion is : Believe in humanity. Religions, as they are believed now, are the curse on humanity. On one end, people believe they have to be fundamentalistic. While on the other end, people believe that religions brought and protects civilization. Divinity steps in somewhere, and there is no end to sufferings endured by humans, all in the name of God.

So. Believe in yourself. And your family. Dont get drawn to a debate with chip-slipped axxholes. Just dont let the beardees get to your family and scare the shit out of them with some fantasies about heaven and hell.

  43. Islamic fundamentalism has destroyed Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan and Tajikistan. In Pakistan muslims are killing muslims. Saudi, despite its vast oil wealth, remains one of the most backward countries in the world. The cancer of extremism has now afflicted the Maldives. This ideology of hate and intolerance will destroy you long before the rising sea waters.

"Because your whole family currently relies on these “Christians” and “Jews” to not live in starvation"

Correct way is that we rely on Allah for not to live in starvation 🙂
