Islamic Minister resigns from chairmanship of Adhaalath Party’s Religious Council

A day after he was asked by the Adhaalath Party to resign from the position of Islamic Minister, Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari has resigned from the chairmanship of the party’s Religious Council.

In a statement issued on the party’s official website, Adhaalath said that the resignation letter was today sent to the party’s President Sheikh Imran Abdulla.

The statement mentioned no further information about his resignation or what was in the letter.

The Adhaalath Party decided this week to break off its coalition agreement with the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), after the party’s consultation council voted 32 to 2 to approve a resolution to leave the government.

Dr Bari and current State Minister for Islamic Affairs Sheikh Hussein Rasheed Ahmed are both appointed to the government under the coalition agreement.

Along with Dr Bari,  Sheikh Hussain Rasheed, who was the former President of the party, was also asked by Adhaalath to resign, but replied he was under no obligation to do so.

Former State Islamic Minister Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who earlier resigned from the government after expressing unhappiness with the current government’s religious policy, today told Minivan News that Dr Bari’s resignation was not an issue and that he would not comment on the matter.

Dr Bari and Sheikh Imran did not respond to Minivan News at time of press.

  2. Majeed has done the right thing actually, why should he resign from the cabinet while he can do more good in such a position. you have to draw a line somewhere between political play and service to the nation in good faith.

  4. This all goes to show that in Maldives "party" still means an occasion where tea, gulha and boakiba are served. In Maldivian politics what still matters is monetary gain, wealth and personal prestige.

  5. The young and new leadership didn't even consult senior leaders like Dr Bari and Sheikh Rasheed before terminating coalition with MDP-led govt. It seems Shaheem Ali's strategy of forcing these two leaders to resign has back-fired. The Adhaalath today has become a "joke". Sad day for any party. The only option left for the new leadership of AP is to expell Dr Bari and Sheikh Hussein - but the party will have to pay a heavy price for that.

  6. Shaheem always wanted to be in power. Maldives is like the comic series where the Vizer always wanted to be The Caliph instead of The Caliph.
All these parties want to be in power and Adaalaath and Shaheem is no different.
What MDP has gained is another important asset. Adaalaath cannot accuse Dr.Bari and Sheikh Hussein Rasheed of being infidels or supporter of infidels.
It is a wise decision by these two Ministers to stand firm.

  7. We should not allow these half baked clerics to disrupt our progress in the name of Islam. Even in Saudi Arabia last week women were allowed to vote and run for public office. The world is changing while these crooks have a very narrow mind of Islam. What they are calling is to hand over the reigns of government to a Taliban type of autocratic regime run by them. Now they are going to re invent Islam like Gayoom for political gains.

  8. I commend Dr. Bari. The Islamic Ministry is doing a good job. He should not be forced to resign because someone else thinks so.

  10. Minivan news being a registered newspaper, falling under maldivian jurdistiction has been breaking the existing laws and regulations of maldives. They have been selectively targeting islam in their news covergae. They are continuously publishing islamophobic opinion pieces from people running hate blogs and anti-islam facebook pages. Their comment section is filled with hateful, degrading and threatening contents against islam. We believe that by publishing those, the editorial board of minivan news has broken certain laws of Maldives. We will be making formal complaints to the Maldives Media Council, Maldives Police Service and Ministry of Islamic Affairs. Our lawsuit against minivan news will also be submitted to the criminal court in a short period.
