Islamic Ministry has “no issues” with government despite Shaheem resignation: Mohamed Didi

The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs has claimed that both himself and Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari have no “major issues” with the government despite today’s resignation of Islamic State Minister, Mohamed Sheikh Shaheem Ali Saeed.

The resignation, which has not yet been officially confirmed by the President’s Office, has been linked by figures within government to alleged differences of opinion between the State Minister for Islamic Affairs and President Mohamed Nasheed, particularly in relation to recent protests that have taken place in the country concerning the work of an Israeli NGO.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Didi, said he had been taken by “surprise” this afternoon after being informed of the State Minister’s decision to resign by a colleague within the ministry.

“This is a complete surprise to me, I wasn’t aware of the decision until I saw some news reports and a member of staff here then told me,” he said.

Speaking to Minivan News this afternoon, Didi said that although he had yet to speak with Shaheem about his decision to resign, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs would continue to function as normal as Dr Bari remained in his position.

“I don’t see any differences as a result of the resignation while the Minister is still here,” he said.  “As part of the Ministry’s policy, there is no difference of opinion between us and the government.”

Dr Bari is a member of the religious Adhaalath Party along with Shaheem.

In looking to at the long term status of the Adhaalath Party in the Islamic Ministry, Didi said it was “a bit early” to tell what sort of action, if any, might be taken as a result of the resignation.

While the President’s Office confirmed that it had received a letter from Shaheem today, it was unable to disclose the contents of the document until they had been seen by the President himself, who is currently away on a visit to the country’s northern atolls.

Press Secretary for the President, Mohamed Zuhair, told Minivan News that in light of a recent number of protests against government policy that had allegedly involved Shaheem, “it was possible that the State Minister may have decided his position was untenable”.

Zuhair claimed that there had perhaps been concern that as both a prominent member of the Islamic Ministry and the religious Adhaalath Party, Shaheem had appeared to “overstep boundaries” by allegedly using his Friday sermons to incite “political protest” and “demonstrations” against the government he worked for.

“Things came to a head this morning when a group of parents from Arabiyya School came to the President’s Office over concerns about funding, a  political advisor then held a meeting with them about their concerns,” he said.  “Protests then took place outside containing a number of individuals considered to be members of the Adhaalath Party.”

Zuhair claimed that “well wishers” to the government, said to include members of the Adalaath Party, had suggested that some of these protestors may have “met last night with Shaheem”.  He claimed that if this was true, then this could have amounted to “provocation” against the government from one of its own state ministers, making Shaheem’s position difficult to maintain.

Both Dr Bari and Shaheem were unable to respond to calls from Minivan News at the time of going to press.  However, Shaheem last week spoke at a mass protest meeting gathered against eye surgeries being conducted in the country by an Isreali medical NGO called Eye from Zion, which had met with the president during their visit.

According to Haveeru, the speech given by Shaheem “warned of ‘direct action’ if the government continues with its ‘anti-religious’ policies.”

“The President’s Office sent me a letter giving a warning to not to speak about Islamic studies,” the paper quoted him as saying during his speech.  “Where is their shame? What is the meaning when they ask to keep quiet in response to the head of Islamic affairs in the Maldives?”

Correction: The article had originally incorrectly stated that Permanent Secretary Mohamed Didi was a member of the Adhaalath Party.  Minivan News apologises for the error.

  2. "Didi and Dr Bari are both members of the religious Adhaalath Party along with Shaheem."

This is an incorrect Statement. Mohamed Didi is, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, is different from Sheikh Mohamed Didi, a member of the Adhaalath Council.

The Permanant Secretary has no relations with Adhaalath, and he is not a member of any Party. However, it is thought that he is aligned with People's Alliance party, as he was promoted to this high post in the civil service during the DRP rule.

  3. Of course the "Islamic Ministry" has no issues nor can the "Ministry" have any issues with the Government!

Whether Dr. Bari or Adhaalath have any issues with the Government is not the point. The point is "THE GOVERNMENT HAS MAJOR ISSUES WITH ADHAALATH AND THOSE CONTROLLING THE ISLAMIC MINISTRY ON BEHALF OF ADHAALATH"because of their "dheboa geri" actions.

How can any Ministry whether Islamic or otherwise try to operate against the policies of the Government? If Adhaalath wishes to promote a certain policy or wishes the Government to change any policy then they must channel those requests through the Islamic Minister who will represent those views in the Cabinet.

Any decision made by the President in consultation with the Cabinet is final. All the Ministers must collectively support that decision. Or if they can't support they must resign.

The Islamic Ministry is not a Government within a Government. It is not an "autonomous" Ministry. Such an autonomy can never be given to a Ministry under the Maldivian Constitution. Never forget that.

It's about time that Adhaalath backed down and found a compromise with the Government if they want to remain in this Government. Or else just pull out. The sooner the better.

Adhaalath can't have it both ways. You can't remain in the Government continuing to receive all the benefits AND continue to thrash the Government like an opposition party.

Whether Islamic Ministry likes it not there is nor denying the fact that Government decisions made in Cabinet are "Collective" in nature. So if you are part of the Government, then you must shoulder equal responsibility for such policies.

  4. That man should have been kicked out of the government long ago - the very first time he partook in a public protest against progressive government policies.

Now it is time for President Nasheed to do the right thing and kick out Adhaalath from the government. Sure, they'll bicker about it for a few days and weeks - but at the very least the government can use the space to implement much needed reforms in the Education and health sector while also doing some actual flushing out of extremists from the country.

When a state minister abuses a Friday sermon for political ends and hate mongering, then it is quite definitely time for him to earn his paycheck from elsewhere.

Goodbye Shaheem. You won't be missed.

(Why do I get this feeling, however, that this guy's only gone to come back? He's too smart a politician to meekly hand in his papers without expecting some reward)

  5. its high time that these close minded people resign from the Islamic Ministry. The most fundamental principle of Islam is peace and i the name of religion we see hatred and demonizing people and in fact demonizing our own people. I heard some asking people who have a different view to hand over our passport and leave this country. Well I also am saying that those who create hatred and violence better hand over their passport and go to suicide bombing in Pakistan and Afghanistan and die as you wish. I pray to ALLAh that we be saved from these fundamentalists.
Just today they ran havoc in front of HEPs office demanding for more land for Arabiyya School, while Aminiyya and Majeedhiyaa also has no space. it doesnt make any sense as our own kids who are also Muslims study in these schools. Whats the different between this schools and Arabiyya. Just because they teach Arabic Language, which of coz is a good advantage but why would they need bigger space, just because they teach an additional language there. we should mainstream religious deducation and provide opprotunites in all schools to have Arabic Language as an option. this will solve all these problems. We also have a misconception that students from Arabiya school are more disciplined and believe me I have seen these students in their uniforms in public behaving as normal as students from other schools.
We have created learned and educated people in all our schools and schools alone cant produce good citizens. Especially if we demonize other humans and create hatred and violence, we will end up with a nation full of terrorists.
Now it seems there is a gang of people imposing their own form of Islam in this nation and i suspect one of them is the resigned minister. We are all muslims and all ouor schools are based on good Isalmic education even if we use English LAnguage and teach Science and Buisness subjects.
we will not develop as a nation by just creating islamic Scholars alone. we need doctors, lawyers, engineers, soccer players, pilots and nurses too.
just open up your mind and use the wisdom given to you by ALLAH

  6. Its obvious that Islamic Ministry doesn't have. But majority of Adhaalath party leaders have. Islamic ministry didn't have an issue with the eye doctors but Dr.Majeed had and he was in the Friday demonstration wearing a T-Shirt that said "Zionist free Maldives".

So who is the legal representative of the ministry? Who forms policies in the ministry? The permanent secretary and the administrative staff?

    Thanks for your spin minivan.

  8. The Islamic Ministry should be abolished as it fulfils no purpose.
Without Adhaalath party and without a ministry of religion Maldivians have lived a much peaceful, crime free life. People helped each other and our ancestors did not victimise our mothers, sisters and women.

If good people want to do help Maldives please try to re-educate the likes of “Seyku” Shaheem and Ilyas who is destroying our way of life and making Maldives another Afganistan and Pakistan. They are not “messengers of Allah” and they are giving a bad name to Islam and our prophet. They are the real, devil disguised in beards and “Kuruta”.

In the history of mankind when ever religion is mixed with politics it has been abused by the leaders. Same thing happened among Christians, Jews and Muslims. These self proclaimed defenders of faith are living in an evil dream, propagating violence and hatred. Adhaalath and all religious fanatics will destroy our traditionally peaceful country in the name of religion (Adhaalath’s Wahabbi version).

I call upon President to abolish the Islamic Ministry as it is doing more harm than good. God promised paradise to people who do good deeds not for the people like Shaheem who preaches hate and suppression. We do not need hypocrites like Shaheem and DJ Majeed. May Allah save us Maldivians from nefarious hate mongers like Shaheem and DJ Majeed.

  10. Shaheem is a key figure in the plot to spread wahabism, hatred and violence. Thank God he has resigned! People like Shaheem under estimate the vast majority of Maldivian who have chosen to remain silent in their opposition to extremist beliefs.

Shaheem and his beardies are destroying Maldives in the name of Maldives. But eventually they will be defeated because
the Maldivian people have had enough of Mullahs' ridiculous ideology.

  11. it is not a resignation but he was forced to resign.it will be better for us without Shaheem. He was politically against the government, not only for the religious policy, he and along with Dr Hassan and Uz Nasheed are looking for the Chair.
he does not know how to solve the differences between Muslims. he was actually acting against the religious so far as he does not know who is Walliyul Amr.

  12. Good riddance. How can Shaheem use Friday sermons to activate his political career. Shaheem & Dr Majeed has been using state funds and resources to mobilize and promote conservative Islam in the country to create divisions among Muslims. Shaheem is not fit to be a leader of the country. He should resign and go to Pakistani Mountains to fight with Taliban.

  13. When I saw the picture of the protestors, what struck me was that these long beards didn't exist in this country 20 years ago. So how and why did these beards take root here?

Of course, one answer is schools like Arabiyya! This form of segregated education paves the way for future generations that are more extreme in their views and less tolerant of each other. Somehow, those attending Arabiyya may think they're getting a 'superior' education and feel superior themselves.

This is all non-sense. Abolish Arabiyya! There is no room for separatist education here. Arabic can be taught as a language together with other subjects in all the other schools under the national curriculum.

Let's not give the 'beardies' room to spread more hatred.

  14. Arabiyaa, Mauhadth etc were the creations of former Dictator Gayyoom.

This was masterminded by him in order to garner millions of dollars from Arab countries to fund his lavish lifestyle.

Very little of the money 'donated' by foreign countries actually went into these schools. Most of it went to fund Gayyoom's notorious overseas shopping sprees.

As a by-product, today, we have groups of 'beardies' who are getting more and more violent and extreme. Time to put this out once and for all. Let's not have 'Madhrasaas' in our country producing future extremists.

"How can any Ministry whether Islamic or otherwise try to operate against the policies of the Government?"
The Constitution of Maldives clearly states that this is a 100% muslim country. and Islamic ministry is the sole agency to maintain this statement true. if it fails (i.e. to be 100% muslim country) then the Islamic ministry should be the first government agency to be answerable. therefore if government goes against the constitution or it tries to damage islam in this country that is a responsibility of the ministry to hold their hand. more over it is the commandment of Allah too to forbidden all evil acts.

"it is not a resignation but he was forced to resign....he was actually acting against the religious so far as he does not know who is Walliyul Amr."

    My! My!

We have a "Wallyul Amr" who:

1 - Legalize boozing in Maldives?

2 - Abolish Arabic (the language of Quran) in Maldives?

3 - Came out to meet notorious "bai balaa" groups at his palace gate, but could not do so when some worried and anxious school parents came to meet him?

4 - Welcomed Zionist quacks in Maldives and met them at the President's office, while he could not do so for a world renowned Islamic Dawee?

5 - Had his lying Foreign Minister sign pacts with murderous Zionists to allow them play with our school curriculum?

6 - Came out against famous religious scholars in Maldives on his weekly radio Friday sermon to satisfy his friendly neighbourhood 'laa dheenee baigandu'?

7 - Was reported to have fine tuned to a drink called Sula Shiraz - a haraam product, in one of his official trips to India, in front of reporters?

    Funny!

"Walliyul Amr" according to what I know rules by Sharia and prevents his subject from "kufr".

I wonder if this "Walliyul Amr" we have today with us in Maldives rules by Sharia and if he will draw his subjects closer to "kufr" or away from it?

Adam shafeeg? Have you no shame to award him the "Walliyul Amr" even with these highly irregular contradictions?

  27. "The Constitution of Maldives clearly states that this is a 100% muslim country. and Islamic ministry is the sole agency to maintain this statement true."

    You're wrong.

The constitution gives no such responsibility to an 'Islamic Ministry'. In fact, it doesn't even require there to be an 'Islamic Ministry'.

The country's citizens are declared Muslims just by virtue of this constitution having been passed and adopted - and the duty to uphold the ideals of the constitution falls equally on branches of government (parliament, executive and judiciary), not just one ministry.

In fact, there is no reason we should have an 'Islamic Ministry'. So far the thing has only been abused by Adhaalath party mullahs for free TV airtime to sell their hateful ideology, abuse of public Zakat funds like it was their pocket money, and as we all saw yet again this friday, for cheap fear-mongering that serves their political ends.

There is a reason why the civilized world has gradually sought to distance the state from religion-abusing political whores, and Shaheem is a sad example of why we need to follow that wisdom.

  32. Abu Hussain,

Rarely does one come across someone who's so completely sold on mullah propaganda.

You're not even trying to look like you have an independent thinking faculty; you're straight up repeating line by line the mullah's talking points.

"Islam is a complete way of life" - the excuse given by mullahs to justify their political ambitions.

"zionist murderers.." - spread by the mullahs to spread anti-semitism and hatred; you see, actual politicians need to justify their public positions with some kind of tangible achievement - better roads, improved housing, education, health, etc.

Unfortunately, the mullah politicians have none of this kind to show, as they're simply unqualified in real world governance. Thus, world over, you'll see them clinging to sob stories and emotional tactics ('oh noez! pooor palestinenz brothers!')

    Congratulations on being successfully fooled.

Furthermore, while on the subject of zionists trying to steal your weak, miserable faith - do you realize it is the Palestinian Authority that recently raised concerns about lack of religious freedom in the Maldives?

You see, it is easy to play into mullah talking points and seek to justify everything they do with stuff you hear from them. You're no longer thinking of them as mere corruptible politicians, but as some kind of infallible divine messengers - or worse, a clergy, that at least Sunni Muslims do not consider a part of the religion.

here's a little anecdote for you lighten your day up a bit. i assume its dark and scary where you are.

A charming little tale from Arab folklore tells of a man whose afternoon nap was disturbed by the noise of children playing in the courtyard below. He went out to the balcony and called, "Children, how foolish you are! While you are playing here, they are giving away figs in the marketplace."
The children rushed off to collect their figs, and the man, pleased with his invention, went back to his couch. But just as he was about to drop off, a troublesome thought aroused him: "Here I am, lying around, when there are free figs to be had in the marketplace!"

  36. BREAKING NEWS!
It has been reported that Seyk Shaheem has gone missing after the abrupt resignation.Authorities found out after collaborative investigation with the Interpol, that he is somewhere near the TORA BORA hills in Afghanistan or near the border with Pakistan. Rumors are out that on this years Christmas wish list of Osama bin Laden, Seyk Shaheems name was on the top. So it is speculated that Santa might have taken the Seyk as a Christmas gift for Osama. It is expected that a video message will be released soon from Osama's cave. This message will call on the Ummah, and unveil Osamas new weapon, Seyk shaheem (Listed among the top 500 most influential Islamic figures in the world). Glorious celebrations are expected from the Taliban on this happy occasion for such priceless gift. Osama is to learn much from the experience of Seyk Shaheem with regards to mass brainwashing and ofcoz, about the strategies of the western infidels to combat extremism. (Which Seyk Shaheems learned from his trip to the west). The world is bracing itself for what doom these two geniuses will strike.

"do you realize it is the Palestinian Authority that recently raised concerns about lack of religious freedom in the Maldives?"

Jews,Christians and Muslims have been living in the land of Palestine for centuries. So it is imperative that they have religious freedom in Palestine.

Maldives is not equal to Palestine.

We get people of other faiths to work for us as teachers, engineers and as volunteers, etc. They can always pray in the privacy of their rooms. No need to proselytize and built churches, synagogues and temples here in Maldives. No need to spread their skin here.

We are not interested in the Christian propaganda of Palestinian Christians and Druzes.

We are interested in liberating Masjidh-ul-Aqsa for Muslims and stolen Arab lands from Zionists.

"The constitution gives no such responsibility to an ‘Islamic Ministry’. In fact, it doesn’t even require there to be an ‘Islamic Ministry’."

You will never stop your hopeless grit, would you?

    According to Chapter 13, APPLICATION AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONSTITUTION, Article 274, Definitions, “tenet of Islam” means, the Holy Qur’an and those principles of Shari’ah whose provenance is not in dispute from among those found in the Sunna of the Noble Prophet, and those principles derived from these two foundations;

“Islamic Shari’ah” means, the Holy Qur’an and the ways preferred by the learned people within the community and followers of the Sunnah in relation to criminal, civil, personal and other
    matters found in the Sunna.

With this in the Constitution and if you think Islamic Ministry is not required, then who will deal with Sharia and Sunnah? Atheists like you?

Then I would say we don't even need a Tourism Ministry to promote tourism in Maldives, if you think our Islamic Ministry is not required to "protect the tenets of Islam" in Maldives.

I doubt Atheists like you could "protect the tenets of Islam" in Maldives!! Funny! Keke!

That, whether you could protect the tenets of Atheism and Secularism in Maldives is another matter, which is out of the chart!

"Coz those who live 20 years back have no gut to follow Sunnah as you are like now. Real Muslims never fear any one else other than Allah. DO you believe in Allah?????"

Allah existed 20 years ago, so did the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH). However, we didn't need to sport long beards to show off! Nor did we have a need to burn flags and march up and down the street screaming 'God is Great!'. God knows that already Himself; no need to shout.

Truth is, the vast majority of Maldivians don't give a monkey about these beardies or their protests. Lets help find these guys a warm home (cave?) in the Tora Bora mountains.

We feel sympathy about your common sense.
if you long your beard it be shown off. or else you have to be like a Panjaby. we can judge only for his actions and appearance. Allah will judge for our hearts in hear after. so i advise as a your good friend be a real slave of Allah.
