Police have the right to prevent any act violating the constitution, claimed Parliamentary group leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Moosa ‘Reeko’ Manik, following a police blockade of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) yesterday morning.
The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) yesterday expressed concern over the police action against the JSC, following criticism of the commission’s intention to rush through the reappointment of 160 judges before the Constitutional deadline of August 7.
Speaking to an MDP rally today, Moosa declared that “if there is no justice, there is no need of democracy.’’
“The Constitution compels the executive to uphold the constitution, so police can stop any action that violates the constitution and can enter any place where such an action is going on,’’ he claimed.
”MDP’s parliamentary group is ready to pass the bill on judges and we have informed the [opposition] Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and the speaker of the parliament,” he added.
Police cordoned the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) on Monday morning, preventing its staff from working or entering the building, while the President’s Office summoned members of the judicial oversight body for questioning at an 11am meeting.
A statement from the Maldives Police Service (MPS) said the office was closed by police at the request of President Mohamed Nasheed, to prevent “unlawful and unconstitutional work from taking place.” Nasheed reportedly asked police to stand down following the meeting.

Police Integrity Commission has no right to go to scenes and interfere with police work. They are not part of the police force!! They need to wait for a complain and then investigate it! I smell corruption here too!!

We the people will prevent them from violating the constitution, we once stood up against their beatings during gayyoms rule. we will do it again if necessary. remember they are who they r to protect us.
Police has the right to act on claims of unlawful, unconstitutional act investigate and present the facts to the public to the authoritative court of law, given the case involves the established Judiciary the parliament should see to the facts, remove the suspected elements and see that a special court without any involvement to the case handle it.
sadly its MP's from the majority party in parliament are in cahoots with the corrupt judiciary.
So what now, is the no Honor in our society the noble people are no more, this is a failed state

Yes the Police Integrity Commission will investigate any matters regarding police misconduct. its in their mandate to do so. This is what we call 'check and Balances' in a democracy

I applaud Moosa for standing up to what is right rather than what is politically and even in cases what is legally correct. We only make something called laws or a constitution to live a peaceful, just and equitable siociety. If the so called laws are openly doing just the opposite then, every citizen has a responsibility to question it and work to change it.
