President’s dancing shames nation: Adhaalath Party

The Maldivian people should “bow in shame” following President Mohamed Nasheed’s dancing at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally on Thursday, the religiously conservative Adhaalath Party has claimed.

In a video of the incident, President Nasheed is seen dancing with a group of senior party officials while MDP Parliamentary Group Leader ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik sings on stage at Thoddu in North Ari Atoll.

‘’This is not the behaviour we expect to see from the people who are supposed to set an example for Maldivians,’’ said the Adhaalath Party, in a statement. ‘’Their behaviour was uncivilised and irresponsible.’’

The party said it was a national shame that the President had participated in a rally where ‘’males and females danced together like in a disco with a DJ.’’

‘’Heads of nations are supposed set an example for their people. They are obliged to live a very honorable life,’’ said the party. ‘’We don’t see presidents of non-Muslim states dancing and performing circus acts in public.’’

“By all accounts [Reeko Moosa’s] singing was pretty awful,” acknowledged a senior government source.

“The Adhaalath Party has new leadership and this may be them trying to flex some muscle and show they are independent,” the source suggested, adding that Nasheed had emphasised the 800 year durability of Islam in the Maldives while handing out certificates to the winners of a Quran recitation competition this morning.

In its statement, the Adhaalath Party further alleged that the MDP had used government vessels to ferry “hundreds of MDP supporters” to Thoddu, which, it claimed, “shows how much this government is addicted to corruption.”

The political system of the Maldives was moving towards a dictatorship and what the people saw on Thursday night was “the real image of MDP,” the Adhaalath Party stated.

The MDP has had an increasingly conflicted relationship with the Adhaalath Party: its remaining coalition partner and the third largest party in the country. The party’s ranks make up much of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

In February 2010, the government capitulated to the Adhaalath Party’s demands that new regulations licensing the sale of alcohol to non-Maldivians in hotel of over 100 beds on inhabited islands be scrapped, after thousands of people protested in the capital.

Individual liquor licensing, which had been repealed in the lead up to the new regulation, was not reinstated, leading to a flourishing blackmarket around the illegal commodity.

Further clashes between the coalition partners took place in December 2010 over the visit of a group of Israeli eye surgeons from the NGO ‘Eyes from Zion’, resulting in protests in Republic Square, the burning of the Israeli flag, and statements that those Maldivians who accepted the free surgery were at risk of having their organs harvested.

More recently, the Adhaalath Party has threatened to split from the MDP if the government allows Israeli airline El Al to operate in the Maldives. The government has responded that flights will begin on December 13.

  1. Why does every article that appears on Minivan seems to contain these words?

    Israel
    Zionism
    Adhaalath

The article started with president dancing somewhere and ended as usual in Jerusalem? What's up guys? Running a PR campaign on behalf of Israel? Need I remind you that the majority of human race understands and empathises with the plight of Palestinians who are suffering under Israeli rule? Yes, I mean non-muslims, the majority of humankind are non-muslims and they stand against Israeli aggression. Only that their political masters need to confront a formidable lobby of organised international Jewry to get elected to public office. That's why the majority of Americans love Palestinian cause and yet congress is poodles to AIPAC. Familiar rant dho?

  4. Psychos.

Actually, most country's popular heads of state have danced in public. If is actually the very mark of civilization and humanity.

Mr. President, don't stop till you drop.

Propriety and being a statesman is parking in being the leader of our country. But dancing does not negate propriety at all! Dancing is not the devil's playground. Dancing is as old as our nation and part of both our culture and our heritage and to say that dancing is not allowed is a violation of our culture, heritage, and religion.

These guys are stuck in an ethos 1200 years old. (no 1400, because this developed well after the death of the prophet) and to try and implement that ethos today is pure evil.

Adhaalath is becoming evil. Trying to implement a new clergy. Guess what guys, you are not God's representatives on earth. That's what the catholic church tried to do as well. It did not work for them and it will not work for you. Not in this country!

  5. Wonder why Adhaalath is silent when children are sexually abused, women are raped and old citizens harrassed. They never talk about the real social issues! Only bark when someone dance or enjoy without harming anyone else. WTF!!

It seems that Adhaalath is only interested in the list below.

    1. Women to obey men without question.
    2. Women not wearing veil / burqaa
    3. Men to be able to marry young teenage girls *under 18
    4. Dancing / singing not to be allowed.

    What is wrong with you!!!??!?!?

  6. @ minivan,@ rasheed,

This article headlines the issues of a president dancing as he pleases...I dont understand the relevance of mentioning anything about Israel, Zionists or whatsovere. Kihaa bodu kameh dhen? Does being president strip him off from all the fun he wants to have??? Does any one remember he is also same as human as you and me?

For those accustomed to maumoon; this wont be a nice gesture...but i dont think its as much as an issue to start blabbering about Israel or zionists. They both ate food and vegetables...so dont we and does it make us the same? Applies to fun and romance too..

Adaalath, if you have that much faith in god as much as your beards, then i think you remember the context from quran about Israel never finding a peaceful home...with word of god also; you cant rest can you? I hate Israel but i hate these kind of irrelevant comments and articles to which i also have to waste my time on cz you just cant let it go.

  9. I was reading a Presidential address where Anni was explaining that he does not want to repress the Extremists the way Maumoon did.

Despite the liberty and freedom he has given them, they have no human sense of gratitude, attacking Anni like this.

I mean sure, watching Anni dance may be a pretty scary thing, hehe, but what the hell, they were not harming anybody!

Islamic fundamentalism is against much Maldivian culture. I danced some fanatstic nights of Bodu Beru, and I felt it was just excercising a gift Allah had given us to celebrate life, why can it not be a form of Ibadah if somne in the right spirit?

It is a tough one, one's first reaction is that you need to lock them up!

But then, As Anni said, when you repress them, that is when you fan the flames of hatred and create violence.

Violence begets violence. As now, the Adhaalaath still espouse a non-violent form of Jihad (Jihad being a struggle etc...) or else they have the public face of what they are for political expediency and the inner circle teachings (which is the case with the Saudi Ulema.)

If he locked them up, they would go underground, and preac violent Jihad more than ever!

  10. The mullahs of Adhaalath Party are ignorant that; those mullahs don’t know that, to dance for boduberu beat is our culture.
Don’t understand why those mullahs are making such statements. They have no followers in this country. More over Maldivians make fun of them which of cause they give blind eyes to!
For centuries Islam flourished here and we do not wont to convert our self to their brand of Islam; the Wahabisam. mullah Iliyas and mullah Shaheem and the rest should understand by now that Maldivian brain has developed and the general public don’t believe in their craps about religion.
So be informed that we are very proud of our PRESIDENT. Also be informed with your ideology bloody Adhaalath party can never rule this country. Shame on the mullahs.

  11. The Adaalath party is a political party. THeir comments will therefore be part of their political strategy.

Minivan's attempts at painting the Adaalath party as a gang of raving lunatics is both insulting and misguided at the same time.

    Insulting because:
    - Adaalath has not, to date, used a political tactic that has not been used by the MDP while in opposition. The MDP is guilty of accusing Qayyoom's cronies of apostasy, homosexuality, usury etc.
    - Adaalath's leaders played a vital role in securing the Presidency for cult leader Nasheed and his acolytes.

    Misguided because:
    - Adaalath is not at all confused about how to gain popular support.
    - They are also aware of the MDP's chessgame political antics and would have expected the backlash that their comment created.

  12. "Mr. President, don’t stop till you drop."

Salim- In agreement 99%, my problem was the dance, not the dancing, Mr President is many things but he is no dancer!

I spend enough time defending him but this is indefensible.

OMG, it's on youtube, the horror!

  14. C'mon Adhaalath, I respect your views against the matter of Israel and the Maldvian government, but this is too much.

The preseident just moved a bit for hardly 5 seconds and it was nothing like a DJ and disco from Reeko. Such appearances from the heads of states are common and they mean no harm nor shame but to show the patriotism and liveliness of the president towards his own people. I don't think he was doing anything shameful there neither did he dance in a shameful way. He was enjoying the function and showing his happiness towards the Maldives (which you can get if you listen to the background song carefully).

I strongly believe its wrong for us to make relations with Israel and allow their airline and people to visit this country. This is for the sake of showing our respect and goodwill for the palestinian cause. Even Malaysia, a country more advanced and respected by the international community in the world doesn't allow strictly any Israeli citizen to enter in to their country. We don't need Israeli's in anyway and hence Maldives should follow a similar path like Malaysia until a free and independent Palestinian state is formed.

Dancing is part of our culture and will always be. And so is our religion islam. Our men and women have danced always but it never interfered with our religion at any time. So Adhaalath, this time you are wrong. Just because the president moves his body for 5 seconds to a patriotic song doesn't mean he let us down in shame. Its alright for him or any maldivian to do that and we shouldn't think about it the way you all do.

  15. not once did Adhaalath mentioned that zionists were coming here to "harvest organs" as JJ Robinson and minivan news keep telling over and over again whenever the issue comes up. Even your link doesnt say anything like that and there is no record of them telling anything of that kind. Shows the amount of distortions and propaganda you people keep spreading. Time is not long till you people are investigated by the media governing body Maldives Media Council.

if you see another human beings as "brown little camels with goat heads" that's very unfortunate.
What i now think is that maybe the previous government was right in barring people like you from Maldives. Having a fake certificate from an imam doesnt prove anything. And i believe that our country will be better off without people like you.

  19. @Dhivehin: I am enraged by the way my Wife had been treated, and I am angry, but of course, Maldivians are generally beautiful looking, but I am enraged by the opressive attitudes! I was expressing rage at the inhumane view of the Mullah's, and I am deeply sorry.

  20. @Minivan: Maldives: I am deeply sorry for my racist remark, I had been hurt man and the oppressive ways of these Mullah's just brought back memories of trying to get our visa rejected and my marriage doubted, and it just hurt me to be reminded of the inhumane ways of these Mullah's that I just let loose...please forgive me i am so sorry but anyone who knows me by now must know how much i love maldivians
    i am really sorry

  21. There are many Asians specially of muslim origin who are being badly treated in your Australia. One of my friend who was wearing headscarf was hurled abuse in a public bus and one of her indian class mate was stabbed in the abdomen. Does that mean I have the right to hurl abuse at your people?
Seriously if you want to live here, have a little bit of respect to our religion and religious scholars.
I call upon the concerned government authorities to be more vigilant when issuing visas to these types of people with dubious certificates who openly throw insult to us and our scholars.
I believe that Anni who became a president by taking the oath "i promise in the name of Allah to protect islam in maldives..." should stop dancing like a drunkard and solve the problems facing the nation.

  23. it is better President claps without dancing, that is beneath his high status in the Maldivian ethos even though it is no big deal under normal circumstances . But that is the common people's attitude that entices President to shake a leg. He is portraying peoples president. pls enjoy without doing it next time round.

  24. Minivan: Maldives,

The certificate from the Imam was no fake, at that time, I was more or less a bearded Mullah myself. But when these Mullah’s, Maldivian Mullah’s, whom I loved as my brothers, thought to make it hard for me to get a visa because I was so white, the racism, the pain I felt was so intense, that it made me almost lose faith in Islam altogether, hatred begets hatred, and that is where the comment came from…

But if you want proof of my Islamic status, talk to Maldivians who lived in Perth at the time before I was married, at that time, I was a genuine Muslim, now, I am a hurt, confused one, but still I hold onto my Muslim faith though at times it is only by the Grace Of Allah that I do…

As for Australians who did this to Asians, I have abused them far worse than what I let rip here...you have no idea...

  25. Me thinks Adhaalath needs to brush up on current affairs. Numerous presidents and prime ministers have danced in public. Boduberu is part of our culture and Adhaalath is insulting our culture when they talk in such demeaning ways about it.

  26. Adhaalath call the MDP corrupt?

Well, that is very interesting. Perhaps senior members of Adhaalath should be careful about saying such things incase people start to investigate where they get their money from.

  27. The president danced for a barely a minute and Adhaalath has got their knickers in a twist over this. Aren't their more pressing issues to deal with in Maldives?
And exactly who is the president supposed to bow down to? Adhaalath? As muslims we bow only to god or has Adhaalath forgotten that. They obviously need a good dose of reality. I would like to see Adhaalath quit the government over this, the party have become like the boy who cries wolf.

  28. Adhaalath had to do this to please their sponsors. Imagine the conversation between an Adhaalath representative and one of their Middle Eastern sponsors, next time they meet up:

Sponsor: "Hey, I saw this video on youtube of your President prancing around like a drunk".

Adhaalath: "Well, you know, we've tried to tell him that these things are against our beliefs, but he won't listen to us".

Sponsor: "Ok, fair enough, at least you tried..."

    2. W##$%*g is a good thing. Cabinet secretaries are allowed to sit infront of their webcam and j$%^ off.
    3. Corruption is a good thing. President's party is allowed to buy MPs to his party with state resources.

  33. When Maldivians want to dance, they will dance. When they want to sing, they will sing. When they want to act, they will act. And if an Israeli wants to come here for vacation, by all means he will come, even right now. So Adhaalath can go back to their opium masters back in Afghanistan and tell them, that Wahhabism is not working in the Maldives.

Say no to Mullahs. Say no to Wahhabism. Say no to Adhaalath Party.

  34. Ahmed Bin Addu Bin Suvadheeb: You sure of this sponsorship business. Man you are just like the extremists who accuse Minivan and Yaamyn and co as being sponsored by the State of Israel.
As for Adaalaath, they are just trying to wank off and head towards the Presidential elections 2013. They won't win, yeah don't think they would. They are bonkers.
They are splitting away from the MDP coalition, good riddance. We should rid this land of all these partisans! We don't need no partisanship. I am just having my say here, folks. If you don't like it, feel free to use the back exit! Thanks.

Yup! unfortunately Ahmed Bin Addu Bin Suvadheeb is right. If you could find a way to snoop into the bank accounts of Adhaalath biggies you would also know. Sad to say its true and that there is some master to whose tune they are dancing. Atleast the president danced to a Maldivian boduberu tune.

Adaalat party, you cannot bring your ways into a country that follows very little from the preachings of Islam..He has every right to dance,he is a free thinking adult who was in his right mind when he started dancing, you don't have to answer for him on the day of judgment..can you raise concern over more critical issues other than someone wearing or not wearing a head scarf or a beard or someone dancing around for fun?How about ladies wearing burgas and doing all that's wrong in the book? How about the lack of decent behavior among the bearded guys?

Adalath needs to decide weather they are a political party or religious organization. They can't be both. If Adhalath intends to be a relevant political force I suggest concentrating on real issues like the economy, violence and sexual crimes.
