Parliament’s Penal Code draft committee has once again decided to summon Chair of Adhaalath Party Religious Council and member of Maldives Fiqh Acadamy Sheikh Ilyas Hussain, after he failed to attend the committee’s previous summons.
The committee stated that it has asked Sheikh Ilyas to attend a committee meeting on May 15 regarding a sermon he gave at the Furugan Mosque in March titled “The Purpose of Islamic Shariah”.
In the sermon, Ilyas swore to God that the Penal Code was intended to destroy the religion of Islam. Calling the penal code “a trap made by the West” to eradicate Islam in the name of Muslims, Ilyas alleged that it did not have penalties for fornication, theft, corruption, forgery, or robbery. He further claimed the code stipulated that if a person claimed they were intoxicated when committing a crime, then they would not be subjected to punishment.
After the initial decision to summon Ilyas, Penal Code Committee Chair Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Ahmed Hamza rejected the Sheikh’s claims and stated that “[Sheikh Ilyas] has told the public that there are some provisions in the Penal Code that are not in it. We want to bring him and have a chat and inform him about the provisions that are there in the Penal Code.”
“MPs summon me as they are ignorant of the ways of Islam”: Ilyas
Upon being summoned to parliament again, Sheikh Ilyas told local media that the committee continued to summon him only because they were ignorant of the Islamic way regarding the matters he had raised.
Ilyas stated that the parliament members who sat in the committee had insisted that the Penal Code did not have any clauses against Islamic principles, but only because none of them possessed sufficient religious education to understand the reality. He added that he will would explain the matter to the MPs through verses of the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet when he attends the committee meeting.
Ilyas further stated that the bill has a number of clauses which contradicted the penalties defined in Islamic Sharia, and that it had many “deceptive clauses”.
“I will strip the MPs naked”: Ilyas
Sheikh Ilyas was also reported in local media as stating that he would “strip the MPs naked” if he is summoned to the Penal Code Committee.
“I am willing to attend the committee. I will not be called Sheikh Ilyas if I fail to strip them naked. What will they prove? Who gave these people the right to take out the penalties defined in the Quran and categorise them into Part 1 and Part 2?” Ilyas stated.
Ilyas also called on all Maldivian media to broadcast the committee meeting which he is to attend live on TV.
Ilyas made the comments at the gathering held by Adhaalath Party and the National Movement at the Artificial Beach on April 30.
The Adhaalath Party has previously alleged that the parliament committee had added a clause to the Penal Code after Sheikh Ilyas gave the sermon in the Furugan Mosque, and accused the committee of orchestrating a cover up.

"Ilyas alleged that it did not have penalties for fornication, theft, corruption, forgery, fornication or robbery". Man, I now understand why my life is under threat from these murdering camel driving pedophiles.
In Dhivehistan, mullahs can get away with almost anything. These corrupt criminals with links to terror-cells are occupying the Fiqh "Academy" (Wahhabi propaganda machine) and the Ministry for Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue. They've become untouchable, so he'll get away with a mild slap on the wrist. Of course in a civilized society all his licences will be revoked and he'll be reduced to picketing funerals and getting laughed at.
did you know our dear shiekh is on the board on the HDC, how is this logical, what are his credentials???
There a many naive and old people people hooked like heroin to his fiery sermons.
Looking at him and hearing his voice you know that he has a case of narcissistic personality disorder. This (I hate to call a man) is destroying the the small kids of the country by teaching them to be fiery and uncivilised - ofcourse in the PRETEXT of Islam.
This is a modern day Aiman Zawahiri, who should be in prison for reprogramming as a civilised human.
with these kind of people around, there is no point in teaching kids to be well behaved and civilized. He is radical to the core.
There is every bit animal in this man called Shiek Ilyas.
....and the current president and government continues to consult such people and embrace them for just a couple of votes at the cost of our children's mind.
...Ilyas should be on the streets of Bangladesh to join his cousins who are burning property, even killing security forces in the name of islam...
To you Nasheed, when you take over power sometime in Sepetember/November...you should put a stop and an end to these fake scholars who divert minds of simple people, use religious for their povert horny lives and create division among brothers and sisters.
As Gayoom silenced them, so should you cage them where they belong or give them a one way ticket back to the mountains of Afghanistan, Chechnya, Mali, Bangladesh, Pakistan and hell!
People of Dhivehistan should not be doped and amused by Shekh’s recitation of holy verses; people always get bemused by poetry, songs and music by road side performers. This is nothing new in human history. The westerners worship pop music and they love musician. In Maldives, people get mystical experiences by holy verses recited in high pitch and Sheikhs is a master in this art, We have to give credit for him for his ability of charming people through religious mysticism . But It is absolutely unnecessary to make this guy such important figure by discussing with him about penal code, laws and political affairs. Why the Junta Majils want to discuss with him about the laws if that is drafted to uphold democratic principles. Why anyone should care about this type of Mullahs who have been abused in India by homosexual in an environment where they have never seen a female and have spent whole their childhood in religious schools which were more like orphanages. Isn’t not obvious that such people who came from absolute poverty and suffered so much mental trauma in such orphanages and indoctrinated with such dubious ideology would not be in sound mental health?
When we see these morons have such influence we feel sorry for the backward ignorant Dhivehitanies for their foolishness and gullibility. Wake up guys this is 21st century, a century of reasoning and science don’t get stuck in the 7th century Arabia. Start learning civilized languages like English, French, Russian and Chinese and reprogram your brains with languages that can make you to think rationally

Every time some moron (pardon the pun) says this, it just makes me laugh at their stupidity. 7th century Arabia is responsible for the 21st century civilisation that you have today. Where did you think those English, French and others learned their advanced "reasoning and science" from?
Study history, before making more moronic remarks.
Do the clerics also emphasise a social justice discourse? Their emphasis seems to be on punishing rather than reducing causes of crime. They may be angry. If undeserved suffering does not make you burn with anger you do not have a soul. By soul, I only mean the love within you. But anger born from soul also fuels a flame of compassion for the poor. To be fair though, I have to say that I don't know that they don't emphasise social justice. I only know one side of the story and if anyone wished to educate me on this issue I would gladly change my opinion.
Drag him to the parliament in chains, with only a loincloth to preserve his modesty, then burn him. Fire in this world, Fire in the next.
Its disgusting how much hatred coming out from the kuffar who comment in this story. From knowledge i can say that the ignorant hardline muslims do not hate the kuffar as much!
@ Ahmed Bin Addu Bin Suvadheeb.
This is correct. The Arabs and Indians developed science, social norms and maths in ancient times. But what happened? why did the scientific and social development stop ?

"This is correct. The Arabs and Indians developed science, social norms and maths in ancient times. But what happened? why did the scientific and social development stop ?"
That's a bit like asking, "why did the Roman Empire collapse"? Much of the fall of the Arabs has to do with the rapid advances that were made in Europe during Renaissance. The Europeans furiously translated Arabic literature on almost anything they could lay their hands on and went on to further that knowledge at remarkable speed.
The industrial revolution was the other big event which separated the "West" from the rest of the world as we know today. You may ask, why the industrial revolution didn't take place in Arabia or somewhere else. There are political and social factors to account for that. Sure enough, the Arabs and Muslims in general got entangled in factional fighting amongst themselves and didn't have much energy to further knowledge.
There lies the lesson for all of us.
@Yo: Many factors lead to the decline of Islamic Science and Philosphy. For example, the Mongols(Tartars) sacked and destroyed the Caliphate in Baghdad, that City the greatest source of knowledge, (books, scholars, knowledge destroyed forever.) There were many wars, external attacks AND interal attacks (internal meaning between rival Seats of Islamic Power) which saw the deaths of great thinkers and sources of knowledge.
Also, from early through to recently in the Ummah, Khariji (Rebellious)types (Kharwaj or PURITANICAL ASCETIC REBEL types) and Zahirite types such as Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, SHeik-ul Islam Ibn Tammiyah -and many OTHER literalists SUNNAH types, often called EXTERNALISTS or LITERALISTS, considered the scientific philosophies to be heresy. They considered the Mutazili and even the more balanced Asharites to be guilty of Bida (Religious Innovation amounting to heresy.) These literalists helped smash down Islamic Science and Philosphy and continue to try and do so.
It must be said that those they considered guilty of Bid'a were extremely devoted to Islam in their heart, and believed Prophet Mohammed (Sallalahu Alahiwa Salaam) to have awakened the spirit of learning.
The above is EXTREMELY simplified.
There were MANY different strands of Islamic thought, sometimes they weaved in with each other and other times created conflict. Many of these strands of thought influenced the developments in the Sunnah and Shariah codification.
I wish I had a whole two hours to break down and write out for you some of the main points.
The best source of information on this topic I have come across was Professor Abdullah Saeed's book (Abdullah Saeed Melbourne University originally from Addu Atoll Maldives) "Introduction to Islamic Thought." It is big enough to give you some depth and good understanding, yet is concise enough for a manageable learning experience. Please get it.
AND as ABABS said, most Islamic science and philosophy (translations of Plato, Aristotle and MANY OTHER GREEK THINKERS as well as BRILLIANT ORIGINAL THOUGHT) was copied and taken to Cordoba (in what was then part of the Abbasid Caliphate but is now part of Southern Spain.)
In Cordoba, the great Arabic works were translated from Arabic into Latin by Monks and European Scholarly "WANNAbe's," and became the philosophical basis of the 'renaissance.' Western epistomology came through the Arabs!
Thank you both. Makes you wonder if the world would be a better place if the rapid advances hadn't taken place in the west but in the east instead. Religion vs advances could have developed more harmoniously over time.

"Islamic science and philosophy (translations of Plato, Aristotle and MANY OTHER GREEK THINKERS as well as BRILLIANT ORIGINAL THOUGHT) was copied and taken to Cordoba (in what was then part of the Abbasid Caliphate but is now part of Southern Spain.)"
Ben is absolutely right. I've had the privilege of visiting Cordoba and seeing with my own eyes, what's left of the once great City which was once The Greatest City in the whole world (if you don't believe me, you really have to visit it)! I heartily recommend anyone interested in early Muslim scholarship and advances to visit that city.
Cordoba's mosque (what is now called Mezquita Cathedral, i.e. Cathedral Mosque) is such an impressive sight and it makes one cry at the way it was denigrated after the fall of Cordoba. To their credit, the Spaniards have done a great job of conserving the place. The Mihrab of Cordoba Mosque is one of the most impressive sights I've ever seen anywhere in the world.
By the way, there's also a very poignant painting which shows the Caliph of Cordoba on his knees handing the keys of the City to the Christian King Ferdinand III of Castille. This is very symbolic when you consider that Ferdinand was helped by the Muslim Ruler of Granada in the capture of Cordoba!
As I keep saying, there are so many lessons like this in Islamic history, which we need to study and learn from. I wish the Friday sermons were more educational like this, instead of the usual non-sense.
And, by the way, if you ever do visit the Cordoba Mosque, do NOT try to pray in there. You'll be promptly arrested. It's now officially considered a Cathedral and not a mosque!
It's interesting to note that the original mosque was built on top of a very old Christian chapel which can be seen even today. This is similar to some of the old mosques in Maldives which are built on top of Buddhist temples, which in turn were built on top of sun temples.
Civilisations and empires grow and die...
This is worth reading...
