A Sri Lankan Minister has reportedly called for the deportation of Maldivians who are currently seeking asylum in Sri Lanka.
Local media reported Minister of Technology Research and Atomic Energy, Patali Champika Ranawaka, as calling on the government of Sri Lanka to take action against Maldivians who are converging in areas within the country.
During a ceremony to launch Patali’s book entitled ‘Al Jihad Al Qaeda’, the minister allegedly claimed that foreigners were flooding Sri Lanka due to conflicts in other countries.
“Because of the internal tensions in the Maldives, thousands of its citizens are now in areas such as Dehiwela, Ratmalana, Nugegoda, and they are seeking political protection and [it] would be a tremendous problem to Sri Lanka in the near future,” the Minister was quoted as saying in the Sri Lankan publication ‘Mirror’.
Sri Lankan media claimed the minister had then called for the government to carry out a proper census and subsequently arrange for the deportation of those seeking asylum.
The minister’s comments were made in light of proliferation of Saudi ‘madrassas’ – religious teachers – who are accused of propagating extremist Islamic ideas in Sri Lanka.
The minister stated that there are roughly 700 madrassas currently teaching in religious schools in the country, and it had been established that the religious teachers had been connected to recent disputes within Sri Lanka.
A media official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Minivan News today that it had “no comment” regarding the issue.
“If there is any comment regarding this issue made by the ministry, we will make it available to the media very soon,” he said.

Sri Lanka never gives asylum to anybody anyway. What is this going to change? Sounds like typical Sri Lankan racism against Maldivians.
Sri Lankan government is not as stupid as the current Maldivian government. Sri Lankan authorities are not going to crack down on Maldivians who go to their country and spend thousands of dollars.
The Govt. of Sri Lanka should grant Refugee status to all the Maldivians in Sri Lanka. the Muslims in this country will look after their welfare.

Its sad that we have ministers of this caliber in the Sri Lankan government. How can he highlight that the problems are caused by the madrasas which are religious schools which are intended to teach the muslims about their own religion. This is very much like the daham pasal for the Buddhist.
These institutes have been run in Sri Lanka for ages without any communal disharmony. Its not the number of madrasas or for that matter the daham pasals which are causing the present day issues which any un-biased rational person will agree.
The supposedly peace loving minister should analyse and realize the gravity of the statements he utters and how he acts and reacts to situations.
The only reason he is able to bad mouth is the fact he has the blessing from the President and his brothers.

I think this issue is more about terrorism though. Maldivians are getting radicalized at such a fast pace, it's not safe to let them live like that in a foreign country anymore. A lot of European countries are also changing immigration laws to prevent muslim immigrants from coming in for the exact same reason. They come in, open up their extremist madrassas, take disputes to their own made up sharia courts without having any regard for the laws within the country, and demand things like all food being halal, women to be dressed according to their beliefs, closing down of casinos and bars or whatever else they don't like. Muslim tolerance levels are below that of.....wait, they actually set the bar for being the most intolerant individual belief system in the world.
So, if they don't tolerate you in the first place, why should these countries play nice and grant them asylum? Just look at Asif's comment. There are many Maldivian families living in Sri Lanka Nugegoda, Dhehiwella, Rajagirya,Colombo 3, as well many other areas. But they are not Asylum Seekers, they living with their children for children's education, paying taxes,heavy rents for the houses and apartments.
There are Pakistani's over 350 who are under UNHCR's protection seeking Asylum, but not in Sri Lanka.

10 months back 243 Asylum seekers was deported due to violation of Sri Lanka law, with minor offenses.Out of them 25 was Maldive's, the rest was Pakistanis.
