NGO Transparency Maldives has called on the parliament and the executive to expedite the appointment of the new Auditor General.
“Some police investigations and several cases in court based on audit reports have been affected because of the missing Auditor General,” said the NGO’s spokesperson, Aiman Rasheed.
Aiman declined to reveal what the cases were and who they concerned.
‘’The executive has recently alleged that some of the parliamentarians are corrupt, and that could potentially be true, but we are demanding they expedite the appointment of the Auditor General. It’s been nearly five months now,’’ Aiman said.
Aiman noted that the Auditor General’s office was not functioning fully because there was no Auditor General.
“Although we have not said what the cases are and who they involve, we have relevant information that this issue has become an obstacle to the continuing the investigations and court trials,’’ he said.
Parliament in March voted to dismiss Auditor General Ibrahim Naeem, with 43 voting in favour of the no-confidence motion and 28 against, shortly after Naeem demanded a financial audit of past and present government ministers.
The Auditor General was accused of corruption by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for using the government’s money to buy a tie and visit Thulhaidhu in Baa Atoll.
Who is the chairmen of Transparency Maldives? Is he/she not the Deputy Chair of Privatisation Committee and Chairmen of Thilaafushi Co? TM! Before you call on parliament..do a bit of cleaning inside and get transparent!
Transparency my a**.
Another puppet by the government. Totally controlled!
"Transparent" was deaf and blind for the last 5 months. Yesterday it was acquainted...
These NGO do not have high credibility, but these people were used to twist everything.
Why dont they ask for the missing member of Anti corruption Commission.
TM is a great organisation. yasin fikry go s-ck a lemon.
A parliament presided by Abdulla Shahid, assisted by Jagiya Nazim,conducted by Thasmeen and controlled by Yameen is to approve an indepedent auditor-general? Nothing is impossible, but this comes close to it!
Ibrahim has a point. Shahudy should resign and TM should elect a new board . Even though he and the other influential members of the government doesn't influence TMs work, there is room for suspicion. The devil of Maldivian politics and government is the disease of corruption. I think TM must focus more on this. To increase the awareness. Maybe the voter education thing is enough for now. Much had changed for the better. Must involve the international organizations to pressure and make political party finances accountable as well. Most of us know they are very defensive and doesn't want to reveal much. Where is the bill on political parties? Did you get any support from political parties? If TM can stand strongly for these issues on a neutral ground Maldivians will be grateful for that.
@Addu,
I am sure many would not agree with me this..but TM is currently wasting a lot of efforts on secularizing this country THAN fighting corruption!!! The "elite NGO's" which are supported by His Excellency P and many core secular strategists!! These fools plan to secularize this country for mere freedom of Open cafe drinking of alcohol/beer and freedom of religion!! What a cheap way to sell the our beloved Nation!! Gayooom tried this very secretly!
Transparency Maldives is simply not transparent and due to these reason peoples trust in NGOs is going down day by day
@Ibrahim
I totally agree with you Ibraahim!! We are seeing the very few core secularist aided by its puppet masters to open Maldives for freedom of religion! TM, Detainee's Network and some other few NGO's (which are not in any sense representing the NGO community) promoting and paving way forward for religious freedom while TM fails miserably on corruption front! And Detainee's Network fails to address to Jail and Human rights issue in Maldives! Both these NGO's have core members who have no respect for Human Rights..or yes..they do respect and bow down to Secularist puppet masters for few dollars!! Lets see where this leave the country to..History will write these people sold Maldives!! The real sale of Maldivian assets is occuring on this front!
The comments show that it's really hard to please everyone.it's a reality of life.some will be in favor and the rest will be against.maybe all who commented here are involved in politics or political parties,which have different views and priorities.it's good that many are concerned with how the NGO's are performing and what are they doing to bring change and reform to the country in which most, if not everyone will benefit.but sadly many are only spectators and not actors.if you want to see change in our country,change must begin with you and the people around you.don't depend on what other people or other NGO's are doing.change must start with ourselves.and if you are so confident that Islam is the best religion,why be bothered with all this 'freedom of religion' thing?we don't even know if we will be alive until tomorrow.live a good and wholesome life and leave the rest to Allah.
If the secularist are so confident of the "new world order" and "US Dream", why are they trying to impose Islamic Nations (no so islamic due to the dictators backed by US and European regimes) with secularist and atheist ideology with cover up NGO's such as TM and DN??? Why are the atheist/gay so afraid..hiding behind names and websites and foundations and political parties?? Gay, prostitution (whatever you call it these days), gambling, Interest money, murder (in what ever form you do it these days) are crimes which will be objected strongly by "orginal" faiths among christians, Muslims, Jews and others!! Currently Maldives is also secularised by so called "fake muslims=atheists" who are too coward to come out!!!
US foreign policy is liberalism only whereever possible, which is, perhaps nowhere. US liberalism is filtered through the strain of reality - through Machiavellian realism - that is to say, the USA will not try and promote liberty anywhere unless it is their national interest to do so. It is paradoxical because, the great 'freedoms' enjoyed by the West have been dependant on the crushing of those same freedoms in much of the rest of the world. Hypocritical. Maldivians really need to carve out, you need to carve out your own freedom through your own pain and blood or else it won't be really your freedom... Sorry, but that is what it comes down too.
