Four arrested for suspected involvement in illegal prostitution

Police have arrested two females and a male for alleged involvement in illegal prostitution inside a beauty salon in Addu City.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the three were arrested last night and that two females were from Thailand and the man was a Maldivian.

‘’They were arrested last night around 9:30pm during a special operation conducted following a report,’’ a police spokesperson said, confirming the arrests were made on Gan.

He declined to provide further information.

Local media reported that the owner of the beauty salon has also been arrested.

Addu Councilors Hussain Hilmee and Hussain Fahmy both said they did not have any additional information regarding the incident.

However, local media SunFM – which recently investigated illegal prostitution in the Maldives – reported that the three were arrested inside a salon in Addu while they were engaged in sexual activity.

The news outlet also reported that a 17 year-old girl was working as a receptionist at the salon.

Recently, the Maldives Media Council (MMC) called on the editors of Sun Online and Sun magazine to issue a public apology following the publication of a series of stories in which journalists wrote detailed and lurid accounts of their visit to an illegal brothel.

The Sun’s investigation of illegal prostitution in the Maldives revealed that ‘massage’ and medical treatment centers were being used a front for Male’s sex industry.

The Sun journalists who patronised the salons had ‘massages’ and reported that illegal prostitution was conducted widely and freely inside such places.

Some salons offered them group sex, while most provided a list of available girls with ‘special features’ for different prices.

  1. 'Illegal' prostitution?

Sounds almost like there is some kind of a 'legal' way for prostitution in Maldives. (not that it shouldn't be)

  2. to sensationalise is the name of the game and stating it as illigal maybe gives them the feeling that something really bad is happening , this is a mundane infringement compared to the crimes that are taking place on a regular basis in the Maldives.

  4. PLEASE/PLEASE--Don't let the Maldives become a centre for sex-tourism.If you do,your young girls will eventually become involved, and the resorts full of single older men will bring trouble..Do not become another Thailand...

  5. @ Larry etc. - Our 'young girls' are extremely smart and they have realized ages ago that our country is about as lawful as the North of Mexico.

Our young girls have used their sexual prowess and the weakness of a poorly educated public to supplement their income for decades now.

They also recognize the power of marrying into the right household. Prostitution is such a dirty word. We prefer to call it "bobodukan" (which means smartness or literally, "bigheadedness").

Don't be surprised, bobodukan also includes - the ability to lie with a straight face, the ability to embezzle, the ability to trick friends and family, the ability to hide one's opinions and beliefs. This is the culture of our country. So a formalized system of prostitution is hardly much to make a big whoop out of. The informal structures are already in place.

  6. Just like black market for $, we cannot survive without this commodity.

You could chase it, but all that would do is, it goes further underground.

But it happens. And cannot be eliminated.

The best strategy needs to be implemented here. And that might not the dream nation, free of all crimes, instead a better plan may be a practical and sustainable solution, with all aspects considered.

Even though I had a go at you about something I did not agree with before, on this one, Kudo's to you, all my soul and heart to you Brother for admitting that sad, painful truth.

How can we change that though, but by allowing ppl to be true to themselves without fear, and by social justice...

Respect you heaps for saying that dude, that made me sad,,, but needed to hear it

  9. I think we should legalize prostitution in densely populated areas!
Imagine how hard it for adult to stay longtime from his spouse.
Now, what you fiend in Male is unacceptable and improper.
You find brothels in dissent residential areas which are not acceptable and proper.
Like most of cites you need a red-light are and the people who such services are at least far away for the normal people.
