MNBC journalist suffers gash to hand in knife attack

A journalist with the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) has been released from hospital after suffering a two-inch gash on his hand in a knife attack early this morning.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam told Minivan News that Mohamed Sodiq was attacked by two men on a motorcycle.

“We received a report that he was being treated and the attack was not serious, Shiyam said, adding that police were currently unable to say whether the attack was connected with Sodiq’s work, gang-related, or a random assault.

Minivan News understands that Sodiq works primarily as a sports reporter.

Head of the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA), Ahmed ‘Hiriga’ Zahir, said that Sodiq was attacked after leaving his office at 3:30am in the morning, while on his way home.

“We have met with the police commissioner and voiced our concern, not only about the safety of journalists but people in society as a whole,” Hiriga said, adding that a lack of security would affect the work of journalists.

  1. whenever a crime of robbing by thugs occurs the police starts to advice the public on exercising caution in handling money or valuables as if to blame the victim for being negligent. No one should carry a laptop computer to and from work place and no one must carry cash in going shopping. No girl must into a taxi alone in going home at night. No shopkeeper should carry the shop keys or cash after work. Go round Male at night to see how much the police are avoiding their responsibility...you could hardly come across a police patrol, even if you do you'll see them staring and trying to talk young girls.

  2. The most road crimes in Male can be detected if police will fix and use CCTV camera properly !so many times officials claim that they will create CCTV chain all around Male but in real it is half of CCTV is not working/ because in police also have some rats and traitor peoples who join orginize crime and specialy dont use CCTV camera in case when they know about area where will be attempt to commit a crime! Male is not a big city/ if every main road and public place have CCTV and real policemans who monitoring the situation police can catch many crime structure members because CCTV will give clear evidence/

  5. The Violence will stop when the ruling will learn that people are not to be trampled on and treated like animals.
the present justice system inherited from the old regime still proves to be a violent crimes incubator .
