“You are swine” and “the children that you bear from this marriage will all be bastard swine,” a tourist couple renewing their marriage vows in the Maldives were told in a ‘traditional Maldivian’ ceremony conducted in Dhivehi at Vilu Reef Beach and Spa Resort.
“Your marriage is not a valid one. You are not the kind of people who can have a valid marriage. One of you is an infidel. The other, too, is an infidel – and we have reason to believe –an atheist, who does not even believe in an infidel religion,” the ‘celebrant’ tells the couple, who appear completely unaware of the humiliation they are being subjected to.
A 15-minute video of the ceremony was uploaded on YouTube on October 24 2010 by a member of staff. Vilu Reef Manager Mohamed Rasheed told Minivan News that the staff member who uploaded the video did it as “a joke”, without “realising the seriousness of the potential consequences”.
Vilu Reef Beach and Spa Resort advertises itself as a place where couples can renew their wedding vows “hand in hand against a golden sunset backdrop” and where their “everlasting love” can be sealed by a “kaleidoscope of romantic hues” that covers the sky during the sunset.
In the video the ‘celebrant’ briefs the couple in English, prior to the ceremony, that it will be conducted according to “not only Maldivian” but also “Arabic and Islamic” norms.
Two wedding rings inside an open coconut, which appears to be lined with mother of pearl, are in front of the couple along with two fresh coconuts. The couple seem dressed for the ceremony, the woman in white as favoured by Western brides.
“Don’t look at her chest”, a man – possibly the videographer – is heard saying as the woman leans over to take a sip from the coconut. She adjusts her neckline.
Men, about ten or more, surround the area both outside and inside the palm fronds, which appears to be a make-shift wedding venue.
The celebrant twirls his thumbs over a piece of paper that he appears to be studying with deep concentration. A male voice asks him if the document is “something new”. He replies that it is “the seventh Article of the Penal Code”.
The document, of which there is a brief close-up in the video, has absolutely no relation to marriage laws in the Maldives. Words that are legible on the document refer to “staff employment”, suggesting that it is a document relating to employment regulations.
Asking the couple and other ‘officials’ to raise their hands as is customary for Muslim prayers, the ‘celebrant’ begins his marriage vows.
“Fornication has been legalised according to Article six, 1.11 of the Penal Code”, he chants in a tone favoured by religious scholars. “That is, frequent fornication by homosexuals. Most fornication is by males,” he continues.
“Research has shown that men have a higher sex drive than women,” he says. “According to Article 8 to 6 of the Penal Code, converting to Islam, or circumcision, is not desirable under any circumstances.
“Germs of anger and hatred will breed and drip from the tips of your penises,” he says.
The ‘celebrant’ then switches from his improvised “Islamic and Maldivian marriage laws” to reading aloud from the document in front of him in the same ‘religious’ tone. This time, what he chants to the couple is to do with terms of employment.
When he returns to the ‘marriage vows’, he refers to certain Articles of the Constitution and combines ‘Section e” and “Section f” to create the word “balhu”, which in Dhivehi means “swine”. ‘E’ in Dhivehi is the letter ‘baa’ and ‘F’ the letter ‘lhaviyani’.
The ‘celebrant’ mixes the two letters to make the word ‘balhu’, the full version of which, as used by the ‘celebrant’, is ‘nagoo balhu’. The literal translation of the term is ‘crooked tail’, believed to refer to a pig’s tail, and is considered to be one of the worst insults in the Dhivehi language.
“You are swine according to the Constitution,” he declares, solemnly.
He then asks the couple to stand up and hold hands. The ‘officials’, too, stand up and place their hands on the couples’. They form a séance-like circle and the ‘celebrant’ begins chanting.
“Aleelaan, baleelaan…”, he begins. What he is chanting is not a verse from the Qur’an, or marriage vows in Dhivehi, but are the words of a popular Dhivehi children’s game.
Words of the game, too, are changed to say “black swine” instead of what is contained in the original.
“Before buggering a chicken, check if the hole is clean. That is because the people of the countries that you are from are familiar with the taste of the ****holes of chicken,” he chants, still with hands held over the couples’.
“Do not treat with kindness people against whom violence is being committed. Commit more violence against victims of violence. You are not people who have been sent to this world to commit violence.”
He then returns to the matter of staff salaries, which he continues to chant in the same tone as he had done the insults. “Do not complain too much about salaries, or matters regarding salaries. That is against the Penal Code. This is not something I am saying for your benefit – it is a law that we have made.”
He begins to chant loudly about “black swine”, stringing insult after insult and delivering it in the same rather ominous tone that Maldivian religious figures choose to deliver their sermons in.
“You fornicate and make a lot of children. You drink and you eat pork. Most of the children that you have are marked with spots and blemishes… these children that you have are bastards,” he continues solemnly.
Someone else is heard at this point to tell the ‘celebrant’ to “say a little bit more, and then quit.”
The concluding chant is delivered in a gentler, softer voice: “Keep fornicating frequently, and keep spreading hatred among people. The children you will have from this marriage will all be bastard swine.”
While the couple are putting rings on each other’s fingers, someone is heard saying that the recording should stop. “Don’t you worry about it,” says someone else, and the recording continues.
“Aren’t they going to suck mouth?” someone is heard asking. “Make them suck mouth”, it is urged. ‘Sucking mouth’ is a term used by Maldivians to denigrate the act of kissing.
“So now, in Maldivian law, in Islam, you are already married”, says the ‘celebrant’, returning to English. The hapless couple are then told to relax and enjoy the celebrations that are to follow, by the end of which a certificate of their nuptials will be ready for them.
Once the ceremony is concluded, the celebrant, who is dressed in a shirt and tie – with the shirt left to hang loose over a traditional Maldivian sarong – swaggers out of the makeshift wedding venue – tugging at his tie and proclaiming himself “President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed.”
The celebrant, Vilu Reef Manager Rasheed told Minivan News, is an assistant Food and Beverage Manager named Hussein Didi. As he leaves the wedding venue having concluded his job, someone announces his presence, as “Ghaazee Hussein Didi”.
A Ghaazee is the Arabic name for a judge or magistrate, also adopted to mean the same in Dhivehi.
People clap loudly as the couple, whose marriage vows have just been mocked in some of the filthiest language known to Dhivehi, are videoed making their way to the next part of their ceremony – the planting of a coconut tree to mark the occasion.
Various types of insults about the woman and the man, their clothing and demeanour, are being spoken throughout in the form of a running commentary in a sports video.
As the bride bends down to plant the coconut tree, a man is heard is exclaiming, “Can see her breasts!” The ‘commentator’ observes, “She is wearing something”, he knows, he says, “because my beard has gone grey watching those things… I have seen so many of them now that I don’t even want to look any more when I see them.”
The groom, who is watering the new coconut tree which they have just planted, is totally unaware of the manner in which his wife and her breasts are being discussed by the group of Maldivian men ‘officiating’ at the renewal of their wedding vows.
‘Celebrant’ Didi tells the couple they should return soon to check on the progress of their plant, testament to what had taken place on the island that day.
The video concludes with the ‘commentator’ repeatedly urging the ‘celebrant’ to make the couple ‘suck mouths, suck mouths’.
The resort’s Manager Rasheed was unable to tell Minivan News how much the occasion had cost the couple or where they were from.
Asked if the couple had been made aware of the nature of the ‘wedding vows’ they had taken, Rasheed said they had been sent pictures but not the video.
“Our package includes sending them pictures on the CD the very same night”, he said. Rasheed added that the resort does not have a written ‘khuthuba’ or sermon from which to read, nor is the role of the celebrant undertaken by a designated person.
“It is done on a rotating basis. We have been doing it for ten years now, and from a very small start, it has grown into a very successful part of what we offer at Vilu,” he said.
Rasheed said he had become aware of the nature of the ceremony conducted by Didi shortly after it happened. He had banned Didi from performing any more ceremonies, but did not feel it was necessary to take any further action, until the video appeared on YouTube.
The staff member who uploaded the video, Ali Shareef, a shop assistant, is not being disciplined or investigated further, Rasheed said. He complied with the request by the management to remove the video from YouTube.
The ‘celebrant’, Didi, however is currently under investigation by the Head Office in Male’, Sun Travel and Tours.
Minivan News has learned that the ‘wedding package’ offered by Vilu Reef Resort lasts an hour, costs US$1300 which includes the services of a ‘celebrant’, a sailing trip and Maldivian music and dancing.
The happy couple can obtain photographs of their beautiful ceremony in the Maldivian sunset on Vilu Reef Resort for an additional US$440.
CEO of Sun Travel Ahmed Shakir was unavailable for comment.

I have dropped all plans of visiting your country. I beleive the racist and derogatory attitudes and behaviour of the staff at this hotel are not unique. What a shame!

Too bad for the Maldives. Your tourism industry is stuffed now. Ever heard of the old saying "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"? Your little place on Earth will now, most likely, slowly die an economic death and you will have no infidels visiting to help pay your way. I find this entire incident appalling and disturbing. The level of viciousness, hatred and misogyny in these Maldivian men who attended the ceremony makes my skin crawl. They sound like would-be rapists. And I'm sure the couple feels violated and humiliated, on an international level.
I'm glad to see that, as of 5 hours ago, the government of the Maldives has apologized to the couple and plans to start regulating these kinds of ceremonies. However, it's too little, too late.
Why spend money there, when you can go elsewhere?
If this resort is in any way interested to distance itself from this happening, it would voluntary refund ALL money paid and offer a FREE 2 week vacation(all expenses paid) to ANY destination of that couples choice, and it would not even have to be the same resort where they had been humiliated!

So The President apologizes for the incident and the "ghaazee" Didi is arrested. The Government will bring out rules and regulations to prevent this type of incident happening again.

And if this was being "uploaded as a joke", it means there were a lot more people aware of what was going on.
Clearly a lot more people than Ghaazee Didi feel contempt and hatred towards our guests.
I suppose this is the natural effect of tourism being treated as a pariah industry by the extremists who continue to pervert Islam in our country.
Many of the insults on the video seem to have their origins from the religious sermons we hear every day and especially on Fridays. We are told "not to trust the infidel" and that "the infidels, they are like dogs". That is the mild version.
This is quite normal and not unusual in our islands these days. So it is no wonder that these people would use similar "jokes" on their silly pranks. Same for the insults on women, who's status we all know.
But this is no excuse for the behaviour of these people. They are supposed to do their job in a professional way and they should have been aware of the importance of this ceremony both to the guests and to the resort. They have no excuse at all for their conduct and there is no real reason for them not to be penalised .
And this is where Maldives Resort Workers and their union TEAM have failed these people and the industry. Instead of calling for all the people involved in this sordid incident to be sacked, they go off on a tirade about Minivan News and "the way the news was reported." No such complaints when the stories of their strikes are mentioned in Minivan. Such blatant hypocrisy I have not seen in a long time.
The solution to the prevention of these problems with wedding renewals is simple:
1) These ceremonies must always be conducted in the presence of the General Manager of the resort or his deputy, and preferably BY them.
2) They should be conducted in English with translations provided to the guests if they don't understand English. There is no reason for the ceremony to be conducted in Divehi (there is no similar ceremony in Maldives anyway).
3) A document in English, signed by the GM, outlining what was said in the ceremony, should be given to the guests as a certificate of the ceremony.
This will be more than enough to prevent this type of "joke".
The changing of the mindset that leads to people using these insults as a "joke" is a much more difficult matter and one that needs to begin by bringing the pariah of tourism out from the street into the home.
Unfortunately, this figure if speech will be impossible to comprehend in a country where there are no dogs except the "infidels" the sermons talk about. 🙂

Some people miss the point that the celebrant did not just insult infidels, he insulted our religion Islam and our culture also. He explains that the wedding will take place according to those norms and than unleashes the most filthy words possible.
If he had any respect for Islam he would not have done that. He has made a mockery of both religions, its a shame that some are taking sides and trying to further enlarge the divide among Muslims and non-Muslims.
For every Didi in Maldives there will be thousands who treat foreigners with respect regardless of their race or religion.

Its all very well saying it was just two men (now arrested as part of damage control) but many, many other employees were looking on at that service so clearly they despise Westerners.
As a scandinavian I've never thought about going to the Maldives for vaication, but reading the article and watching the video, for sure makes it a no-go in my mind.
It's a shame how some bad-apples, as these particular resort workers, are able to ruin it to the bunch.
Deciding not to go to the Maldives due to something like this is a result of quite a hefty stereotype, but in todays world, were it is possible to lay travels so-to-say anywhere, it does not take more than this to drive potential turists away.

I guess that most Germans spending their holidays on the Maledives do that because of the beaches, the sunsets, the palm trees and the friendly people... and not because of Islam.
In my opinion, tourists are very stupid to put any deep emotions in a ceremony they can't understand. To look at other people's culture openly to learn and listen is one thing - to place yourself in the center of attention without any knowledge of traditon and language is foulish and arrogant from the start.
That couple took what was offered freely and got something what no living being deserves. I feel sorry for them. Aside of that, the law of their country will offer them a way to gain financial compensation of the people in charge.
This and not a boykott that striked the pooreset in the whole Maledives is the way civilized people keep the peace.
Considering the murderous outrage of the muslim communities all around the world over some Danish newspaper drawings, I wonder about the consequences of an insult of their religion when it comes from their own midst.
As for me, our desision to cancel our trip to the Maldives is quite simple. We would like to go to a place where we are 100% sure that we will be treated correctly, and not 99% sure. After all it costs a little fortune to allow ourselves such a trip.
Besides, as for us islam is not of importance. However we cannot ignore the fact that islam is associated with terrorist attacks etc. Not to mention the general uprising due to a guys drawings. However when reflecting upon it I think that must be due to lack og general education.
There are so many other beautiful places to go. Believe me it is not about boycotting the Maldives. It is just at the end of the day we are better off elsewhere.
i am a swiss national, like the couple in the video... and i lived many years in india. i have to say that what we experience in this video is a common behaviour in india too:
during my stay in india i was at first very eager to learn the local language, which i managed to do to some extend.... but then the local people suddenly stopped to teach me more, when i started to understand what they where talking about me in my back, or even in front about me: in the restaurant, shop, or bus; on the street, in offices, everywhere the same: insults and racism!
so the locals refused to teach me more, cause they could not uphold theire favourite passtime of insulting foreigners in their langauge which the foreigners were supposed not to understand. my love for the indians died in the moment i understood what names they called me and what they where always talking about me... so it must be a problem from the whole region, not only maledives. later i stayed for half a year in an ashram in india, but at the end of my stay they still called me "the foreigner" instead of my proper name...

Hey all, just became aware of this video, it was on the morning news here in Australia and i must say, i am truly shocked. Me and my wife had a trip planned to your "paradise" but have immediately canceled after seeing what exactly you people think of us. This was not just a trip for us alone, but for everyone who work for us (25 people in total). We , well my wife and book keeping, arranged almost everything which would have cost us around $375.000,- Aus ( and some people would have stayed longer after the convention would have been over). Next time when you insult us, make sure we are not seeing or hearing it. Because of you incompetence, we decided to go to Fiji instead. Goodbye and good luck.

The Youtube video of the miscreant celebrant is shocking beyond words. It not only reflects badly on all the staff who were present and failed to disassociate themselves, still less prevent, such blatant mockery of trusting guests, but the appallingly disrespectful staff culture that is evident is as much a sign of inept management and training. Clearly, instruction on the need to respect paying guests whose money pays their salary, feeds their families and contributes to the economy and general good of the republic, was omitted from the now infamous staff manual! I can guarantee no future visits from me, such is my grave disappointment over this disgraceful matter.

Don't worry bro, you do the good work, that is exactly the right attitude and spirit to get those pesky westerners, who don't understand that they were actually called endearingly piglets and puppies instead of worse names, according the ancient tradition of your islands, to give up their futile plans of coming to your country and soil only with their existance that paradise on earth. Don't worry about lost tourism, there will be brothers in the Faith in the Saudi-Arabia and Gulf states, who will love to come and bring you their habits and customs and in the process correct yours, but this will happen only if you manage to get all those ungrateful westerners to change their plans and choose some other places for spending their dirty and illgotten moneys. As a person in the travel business, you are sure to value the total change of the clientele to better, after all doesn't especially the arabic peoples are widely known all over the world for the kind and compassionate way how their deal with their servant folks. I will never go to the Maldives now ever and will tell everyone i know who wants to go there about this video, how can you trust they are genuine ? this is insane, if i was the resort owner EVERYONE who understood what he was saying and didn't intervene would be fired. I have a sneaking suspicion that the management know fully well this has been going on since day one and laugh at the people who actually pay there wages..

OR
The fanatic crowds of islamistic (I do not say muslim - note the difference) demonstrators burning national flags & shouting for beheading of "non-muslims" (Mohamed Nazim), danish cartoonists etc.

I was looking at the very same hotel, selecting it for my wedding. Well let me tell you that Google put an end to it by finding this article for me. Travelling to perform my ceremony on Maldives? I don't think so, not anymore.

Maybe rather than condemning the Maldives, we might take some time to think about casual consumption and exploitation in tourism? What do we deserve for thinking we can just go wherever we want because our money says so. Some acknowledgment of colonial behaviorus would probably be useful here...
