Three MNDF officers arrested on robbery charges

Police have arrested three officers of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) accused of entering an expatriate residence in Male’ in army uniform and robbing the Bangladeshi workers with threats of violence.

Lance Corporal Ali Ibrahim, 26, of Lhaviyani Hinnavaru Aaramuge, and Private Hussein Mahir, 23, of Laamu Mundhoo Finifenmaage, were taken into custody Monday night with stolen cash.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam told Minivan News today that the third suspect, Saad Ibrahim, of Kaafu Gaafaru Noovina, was arrested yesterday after conducting a search for the accomplice.

All three were working at the MNDF coastguard. Ali Ibrahim, who joined the force in November 2004, was employed at coastguard operations while Hussein Mahir, who joined in June 2008, was a security officer at the coastguard building.

In a statement on Tuesday (August 30), the MNDF said it was “working with the police to take the harshest legal action possible” against the errant officers.

According to local media reports, the three officers robbed the expatriate workers living in Maafanu Pink Rose on Fareedhee Magu on a number of occasions during Ramadan.

Newspaper Haveeru reported that the uniformed officers entered the house on three consecutive nights and took Rf30,000 (US$1,945), Rf24,000 (US$1,556) and Rf12,000 (US$778) respectively.

The two officers were reportedly confronted by members of the public on the third night, who informed the police.

  1. This is expected. As the nation slowly sinks into this political mess, you would very soon see looting, daylight robbery, arson to cover things up, etc...

What a sorry state we are in!!!

  2. There will be criminal element in any organization, as it’s part of being human. The action of few does not represent the forces in general. I have confidence and trust in MNDF.

  3. @ Baazu
With your views of 'tolerance' and sympathy with the human condition, anything and everything should be fine. Occasional violations of laws are also fine.

This is liberalism at its worst.

  5. Being liberal is one thing. But you should draw a line where the freedom ends. I mean the people you trust to defend a nation and whom is paid atleast 50% salary to an av civil servant should have not committed such a notorious crime. I mean you can expect that with the local pateys and such. But come on! when the police officers or army personnel break into your house and commit day light robbery, threaten and harm you... whats the point in them being who they are supposed to be? No wonder people don't have confidence or least respect any authority in this country 🙁

  6. this is same as our beloved MPs looting by deciding how much they should be paid for themselves. Its same as government affiliated cronies like reeko moosa gets awarded projects just like that...so lets not make this a big hot topic. They looted a few thousand it might be for drugs or maybe for a very needy cause due social circumstances they might have been facing.

  8. With the current rate of inflation due to the dollar hike and increase in the cost of living, things are only slated to get worse. When times get hard then people will be compelled to resort to other means to make ends meet. No excuse however for the men in uniform.

  9. Our lawmakers are robbing and looting the nations coffers. This is the status of the people entrusted to make laws. Now we hear that the people entrusted to maintain the laws and defend the nation are also robbers. This cannot be "ANEH DHIVEHI RAAJE"..... or is it?

  12. We all believe that it's possible that MNDF, Police, Customs or Immigration Dept. may experience such ill and dirty issues but the dangerous issue shall always be if relevant organization fails taking appropriate action against such criminals. We also believe any criminal in this country must be punished but we all know that murderers are called here in the Maldives murder suspects, drug-dealers are called drug-dealing suspects and finally released saying not enough evidence. So, we don't need anything else to label this country that has an outdated Justice system and one of the most corrupted countries of the world
