President appoints clemency board

President Mohamed Nasheed has appointed a clemency board to give legal advice to the president regarding the early release of inmates after the Clemency Bill was passed by parliament.

Press secretary for the President’s Office Mohamed Zuhair said the board held a meeting today and discussed the completion of administrative work so as to begin acting as soon as possible.

Zuhair said the board would give advice to the president and it was up to him whether to follow it.

”The clemency board was not established to focus on releasing a specific person or group,” he noted.

The president of the clemency board is Attorney General Husnu Suoodh, while the others members are Mariyam Suzee Adam (social sector), Nazil Afeef (legal sector), Shifa Mohamed (education sector), Dr Ahmed Razee (health sector), Sh. Mohamed Farooq (religious scholar), Maizaan Ali Maniku (civil society), Ahmed Adil (Parole Board), Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Sodiq (police), Hussain Shameem (judiciary), and Ahmed Mahloof (legislature).
