Government opens applications for National Awards

The President’s Office on Wednesday has opened applications and nominations for the annual National Awards.

Applications will be accepted until the end of August and forms are available on the President’s Office website.

The National Awards aim to recognize service in a variety of fields.

At a press conference held today, President of the National Awards Committee Abdul Rasheed Hussain stated that the categories in which awards will be given will be published in today’s edition of the government gazette.

He revealed that awards will be categorized into two Awards of Honour and Awards of Encouragement.

President Waheed to present National Awards in Male’ on August 22

The National Awards Committee has finalised its list of recipients who will receive accolades at a special ceremony being held at the Dharubaaruge conference centre in Male’ on Thursday (August 22).

Of this list, three recipients will be presented with the National Award of Honour during the event, while eleven other people have been selected to receive the National Award of Recognition, according to the President’s Office website.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed will also present a further 27 individuals with the National Award for Special Achievement during Thursday’s ceremony.

National Award Committee receives 108 nominations

A total of 108 nominations have been received by the committee overseeing this year’s National Awards.

The National Awards Committee said the selection procedure to finalise the nominees who will receive accolades had now begun after a two-month nomination period closed on July 31.

The committee, which decides on public figures to honour for their work in societal development in fields such as health, agriculture and the arts, was reformed on April 9, after the previous body completed their allotted three year term.

According to the President’s Office, the awards committee is designed to function independently from the government, which in turn will respect any decision made.

This year’s ceremony is expected to be held to coincide with the 2012 Republic Day celebrations.The national awards were last held in November 2011 and conferred by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

President’s Office announces National Awards launch, new appointment

The President’s Office has announced that the National Honours Committee will open nominations tomorrow for the 2012 National Awards presentation.

The National Honours Committee is expected to provide further details about the awards themselves during a press conference scheduled for tomorrow.

The President’s Office has also announced the appointment of Hinna Khalid to the position of under secretary.
