Court warrant issued for arrest of MDP MP Adil on child molestation charges

The Criminal Court has today issued a court warrant for the arrest of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Hassan Adil.

A police spokesperson confirmed that court warrant was issued and for charges of child molestation, but declined to provide further information.

When asked about Adil’s future in the party should he be found guilty, MDP Chairperson Mariya Ahmed Didi told Minivan News that if Adil was found guilty “then of course the party should [take action]. The party does not condone such acts. But we should only speculate after the court has come to a verdict.”

She referred Minivan News to Parliamentary Group Leader ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik, however his phone was switched off at time of press. MDP Parliamentary group’s former spokesperson MP Ahmed Shifaz said that he had heard about the incident but declined to comment on the matter.

Last month local newspaper Haveeru published an article reporting that police and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) were conducting a joint investigation regarding child molestation allegations against a MP, which was later removed from the newspaper’s website.

HRCM President Maryam Azra told Minivan News at the time that she did not know whether the commission was investigating the case.

”We are trying to find out who it was that has told Haveeru so,” she said at the time.

Azra did not respond to Minivan News today at time of press.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MP Ahmed Nihan said he had no information on the issue.

Over the past year there has been an increase in reports of child abuse, including by high-profile individuals in the Maldives. Prominent Quran reciter Hussein Thaufeeq, who appears every day on TV and teaches Quran to children, was recently arrested on numerous child molestation charges.

Adil, a former member of the opposition-aligned Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), did not appear in parliament today.

  1. Gee. I wonder what Islamic Foundation Fauzy has to say about this.

The guy seems to have a comment to make, a statement to release and a protest to organize on every other issue.

  2. Unfit to be elected as a Parliamentarian. What do we achieve by electing 77 MPs. Urgently need to change the constitution.

  3. This is a step in the right direction. That no one wants to believe in the accusation without proof is not a bad thing. But once the evidence is presented, if it shows guilt, cannot ignore it!

I hope the the trial will be transparent an not hidden behind some BS reason. As a public figure we have a right to information about the MP's conduct.

  4. The Police would not have asked for an arrest warrant unless they had solid grounds. Likewise the judge would not have issued this warrant unless there was compelling evidence especially when the accused is an MP.

News of this case has been going around Male by word of mouth for quite some time. Being a small community many people have been aware of this. This is not political.

While I am from MDP, I do not believe it is in our interest to shield such people if found guilty. As a party we would be stronger by forcefully dealing with such cases instead of protecting them.

  5. "Azra then told Minivan News that she did not knew"...knew???

yes its a good thing to wait for proof...sad thing is, when the courts let go of "people" due to lack of evidence against them, everyone starts blaming the courts, including the government. and the public is quick to use the words "kuvverin" at these people despite the fact that there was no evidence to convict them of anything...

of course there is an evidence bill that could improve things...but it has to wait. there are more important bills that concerns the privileges of the mps to finish...

He was probably following the advice of "scholars". After all, what's the definition of underage in the eye of a "scholar"? Hmm...

  13. This is just the tip of ice burg which people needs to know about the top class politicians of all parties! All parties top grass consumes Alcohol, does fornication and adultery, does have gay's or lesbians. Does fund gang violence and drug trafficking. Maintains two to three young girls or boys for personal pleasure who could be a servant to driver or a personal escorts. These actions would be very vividly visible around them. BUT leaders of these parties partially involved or fully doesn't take these issues seriously! This issue of MP Adil is a joke as their are similar cases of girls around 16 to 18 or 18+. What a joke!! All these politicians just mocks the citizens and constitution. Power hungry wolfs!!

  14. This is a lesson for all the Maldivians. If you had voted for the Islamic Scholars who have obtained education from Saudi Arabia or Qatar, you would not have witnessed your MP raping children from your constituency.

  15. A child molester is exactly a child molester, whether MP, imam, or father.

Lets not bring religion into this unnecessarily. Religion is no excuse for a criminal, nor a convenient explanation for people reading the news.

Quite right. A child molester is a pervert person and should be dealt with strictly with an exemplary punishment.

  19. Hmm. What if this is just an accusation? Perfectly innocent until proven guilty. If proven guilty he's the lowest of people.

  21. In Male’ its over populated and people are forced to live in aprox 200sqft with their whole family.. and for sure they wont be able to have sexual relations happily full satisfactorily even with their own wives..

So what would you expect from them? Sexual desires of everyone wont be the same.. Some people will get wild and go forward out of the boundaries transgressing the limits..

So the only solution to minimize the crime rate is to legalize the things which the majority wants.. Legalize massage parlors, (safe sex) prostitutions etc. I mean whats the problem in having sex with own girl friend.. Thats something personal in between them. If we make laws to influence peoples private life.. this country will never see the minimization of the crimes like raping (human/animal) child molestation etc.
