MDP might have to “take action” against VTV, warns Reeko Moosa

Parliamentary group leader for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik has threatened “action” against Villa Television (VTV), a TV station owned by leader of the Jumhoory Party (JP) Leader and MP Gasim ‘Buruma’ Ibrahim.

Moosa alleged the channel “repeatedly misleads and broadcasts news in a way that smears respect for MDP, [in such a way] that MDP might have to take action against VTV.”

“Citizens of the Maldives have realized that VTV is not meeting the proper broadcasting standards due to their attempts to discredit MDP, the political party which introduced democracy to the Maldives,” claiming that there were “limitations” on freedom of expression.

Opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MP Ahmed Nihan said it was “typical” of Moosa to attack any media that “does not report the way he likes.”

“Previously when MDP was in the opposition he was against [state broadcaster] Television Maldives, and more than once he attacked the TVM building and its staff,’’ claimed Nihan. ‘’Now MDP is in power, Moosa is against VTV and DhiTV (a private television station).’’

Nihan said there was “only one action” Moosa could take.

‘’He can threaten the government and delay the issuing of a broadcasting license of VTV – I heard their license would expire very soon,’’ he said. “There is no such law that allows him to do that, but that is the only thing he can do.’’

He added that however Moosa attempted otherwise, it would be “impossible for him to bury the media.”

”The reason they hate VTV so much is that it has this TV programme that shows things President Nasheed vowed he would never do but did after coming to power, and some other things he had scheduled to do but failed to deliver on time,” Nihan claimed.

  5. Moosa might be a little eerie character for some & even I do not condone all his "ranting" here and there. An "Actor" will always be a good "Actor".

Only that he had mastered some politics and became a good "Political Actor".

However let me quote from the article:
"Opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MP Ahmed Nihan said it was “typical” of Moosa to attack any media that “does not report the way he likes.”

I wonder if Nihan had thought this:
It's always typical of Nihan and his "Blue Forever Mission" to attack anyone and any establishment that doesn't agree with their ranting , deceptions , and lies.

AND it's more typical for them to garb and protect all the so called liberal, independent bodies and media that so vehemently trying to help the resurgence "Blue Forever Mission".

This is not a nation of yellow, blue, red, purple, green separately.

This is Republic of Maldives and it belongs to the people of this nation as a whole(in Green,Red,White as ONE color).

May Almighty GOD save us from the deceptions and lies of all within our society.

  7. VTV supports terrorism and promotes it and tries their level best to mislead the people of the Maldives. Their news and reports have no real value to the public other than criticize the government and are unable to prove anything.

The very existence of VTV is to promote propaganda. And by the way TVM, those days were dictated by Gayoom till the very end and Nihan needs to get more sleep before he speaks. Looks like he's running out of options.

  10. I don’t understand what is wrong in private channels criticising the government. That is the freedom democratic countries media channels in the world have and it should be the same in Maldives too. If Reeko is threatening VTV, then it shows the government is trying to suppress the Freedom of Media. The government should take private media channels as a guidance to improve their performance, NOT as an obstacle. And wise people shouldn’t get scared from a small private TV channel. For god’s sake, what type of a man is this reeko. I think his brain’s are in his crotch.

Just had a thought of how the executive used TVM after the en masse cabinet resgination and the terror, violence and damage it caused on citizens and their property.

Wasn't it this sort bullying that MDP fought so hard to get rid of?

This just makes the MDP look bad.

  17. This is why we need to elect people who can read and write, people like Moosa have iphones laptops but dont know how to use them. If he reads little bit of news else where in other countries, like USA for example Fox news bash and criticize Obama administration every day. But neither Obama nor his administration come and tell the will take action against Fox news. Moosa needs go back to school learn how to read and write.

  18. In my point of view there is no problem that privet broadcasters criticizing the ruling government. in other hand to talk about politics. but what i believe is that they also do have responsibility on the society. they should also high light the rights and wrongs of the society in a way that it can effect the nation as whole. ofcox in a positive manner.honestly speaking could only see MNBC one doing this. the rest are just yaameen, gasim, president nasheen bla bla. first take your social responsibility being a broadcaster. thanks

  19. VTV should be allowed to criticize the GOM as much as they wish. However, their reporting should be truthful, fair and unbiased with both sides of the story presented. They should not mislead or misinform the public.
The language used should also meet the standards expected of public media. They do not deserve a subsidy from our money.
