The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expelled member Aishath Sherin from the party after she decided to run as an independent candidate in the Local Council Elections, in opposition to head of Male’ municipality council ‘Sarangu’ Adam Manik.
Sherin had openly criticised Manik and alleged that he was influencing people using money, the MDP said in a statement.
”The party decided to expel Sherin because the area of Mahchangolhi South, where Sherin decided to run, was won by Sarangu Adam Manik by the primaries conducted by MDP to choose candidates,” said the MDP in a statement, further accusing the candidate of “smearing respect” for both Manik and the party.
MDP alleged that Sherin had been “continuously criticising the party and candidate in front of people of South Mahchangolhi area”, and declared that t it would “take action against other such candidates.”
In an interview to SunFM, Sherin has denied running for the election as an independent candidate with the intention of confronting MDP.
”I have always said, I will run against Sarangu Adam Manik, and I will try my level best to win because he is influencing people with money,” she told the station.
She said her expulsion had “made it easy” for her to win the election.
This is acceptable in Aneh DhivehiRajje. Vote for MDP!
No member of MDP should think he or she is indispensable to the party. If members go against the set rules, MDP should expel them. Its not worth having a woman as a councilor just because she is a woman. This woman has a mouth and no brain. So she rattles.
Would you rather have an imbecile like Sarangu Adam Manik or someone decent and honest who will do the right thing for Maldivians?
Some say a primary was held and others say a primary was not held. Some say Sherin signed a contract to refrain from competing as an independent if she lost the primary and others say Sherin was not allowed to compete or was disqualified before the primary. What is the truth of the matter. Hope Minivannews will get us the facts.
Well to contest in mdp primary u have to get a list of 500 people signed from the constituency. It was a known fact that Sherin had the signature of an individual who was not even living in Male'.. apparently he is a college student in lanka. i think that was teh reason she was disqualified. everyone knows shes getting the funding from yameen who hates adam manik and he is just using her. because one shud wonder y on earth wud sherin contest in a different constituency where she cannot even cast her own vote!!! politics is a funny game. I hope she has the capability to run a municipal council.
@Manik,
Honesty is not based on a person's sex or the economic background a person comes from. Neither is capability dependent on those factors.
Sherin ran in the MDP primaries for Galolhu dhekunu and since she lost it she did not get the party ticket to become the party candidate for that constituency.
Unable to accept her defeat, she then ran as an independent while being a member of MDP after MDP made a public announcement that they do not encourage people running as "Independent" candidates whether one is from a political party or not.
Before candidates from MDP ran in the primaries they all signed a contract that if they fail they would not compete again, instead they would support the winner of the primary and help the party achieve the seat.
So, how do you measure Sherin's honesty?
Change the name to Maldives Undemocratic Party.
Before candidates from MDP ran in the primaries they all signed a contract that if they fail they would not compete again, instead they would support the winner of the primary and help the party achieve the seat.
sherin lost the primary so who on earth she think she is?
Sherin didn't failed in the primaries.
She was systematically banned from taking part in the primaries by the MDP secretariat, an influence directed by Adam Manik.
...and its not Yameen who is funding Sherin. Its the Economic Advisor to the President, Ali Shiyam and MP Hamza.
Why is it only Sherin that is being expelled? Why not the rest of the members who is running as independent???
According to Sherins interview, she mentioned Adam Maniks text message as: "I've money, I've power, I've gangs." Politicians!
this is nor a surprise, people the adam manik are born dictators ... they will never change.
Money Talks and SaranGAY talks.
Scales, nothing quoted in the MDP statement says that Sherin ran and lost the primary. If she did and if she signed a contract not to run against the MDP candidate if she lost the primary then surely disciplinary action should be taken.
As an MDP member of long standing,I would support most other MDP members over Adam Manik for sure.
Yesterdays incident in Addu is shocking. The staff who worked at Gan blahatta Unit were given the choice to go to Airport company or remain Civil service and 46 staff went to work in the Company and others choose to remain in Civil Service. Available posts were advertised and those applied were interviewed and the rest has to be released with 3 months pay and a total amount according to the years they have served. The uproar yesterday was uncalled for. They all knew what was happening. The process took place from September 2010 and they had enough time even to change their mind. Minivan should have covered this news.
Sherin and Umar Naseer should form Islamic Maldivian Rayyithunge Democratic Party!
Done right. Gives clear message that nobody is indispensable or above party. There should be discipline in the party. Not like DRP - where old man is campaigning for PA instead of DRP candidate.
The bloc which includes "the Mayor" has clearly proven itself more powerful than the 3As and their allies within the MDP.
Sherin's connection to the 3A clan is no secret. Did she not serve in some position at the MNCCI during the stewardship of Jihad from the 3A clan?
The MDP is secretly riven but before anyone celebrates over this fact, any dispute can be settled with dialogue. So the 3A clan may cease and desist if the ruling bloc within the MDP comes to the negotiating table with them.
I am glad we are still learning from electoral process of other countries. I think MDP has done the right thing. It is important the party defends established candidates. She is free to join another party and run.
