Hassan Saeed assesses six months of Waheed’s presidency

“Any attempt to review Dr Waheed’s half year in the presidency should bear in mind the challenges he faced and the past behaviours of his predecessor that he avoided adopting himself. Only thereafter will we be able to fully assess any material advances his presidency brought,” writes President Waheed’s Special Advisor and leader of the Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), Dr Hassan Saeed for Haveeru.

“Dr Waheed was called in to office in a most unusual manner. The day after he took the oath of office, his predecessor claimed that he had resigned at gunpoint.

To anyone who was not aware of the character of the people involved, this chain of events might not sound like a normal governmental transition.

Perhaps understandably, some international organizations were soon demanding answers to why this change had happened with some people in them questioning the legitimacy of his rule. I’m sure everyone will recall attitudes in the international community shifted back and forth over those early weeks.

As a small country, the Maldives relations with its neighbours and with international institutions are vitally important. Clearly as a result of this a significant percentage of Dr. Waheed’s time was spent on addressing the concerns raised. This work has in recent months stabilized with the establishment of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI).

CoNI was not just established to respond to international opinion, but also to demonstrate that the Government could be transparent to its own people. Having set this up in the most professional and impartial manner, one would have hoped that the natural reaction from all sides of the argument would have been to wait for its outcome.

However that was not to be the case. Nasheed and his supporters have been out on the streets creating havoc and committing crimes. Security forces have had to spend a lot of time attending to these activities at a time when  the public has  been demanding the government does more in addressing crime and punishing criminals in response to recent high profile cases of murder.”

  2. Just in case I may not have the standard for Haveeru to publish my comment will give a try here also.

    Dr.Hassan,

Do you honestly believe that Dr.Waheed's presidency started on the right foot? Just a few of hundreds of questions here:

1 - Do you think, given the circumstances of President Nasheed's resignation (regardless whether at gunpoint or voluntary), it was ethical for President Waheed to take oath of office without saying at least a hello, are you all right to his former boss and running mate?

2 - Even on 7th Novmeber, having confirmed that he's been watching TV all through out the situation, Waheed would have been fully aware that Nazim and Riyaz's involvement were questionable at the very least.

Do you honestly believe that appointing Nazim as Defence Minister was a good decision?

3- For someone who's tag line seems to be "following the law", appointing Abdulla Riyaz as CP is definitely against the spirit if the Police Law even if he was first appointed as an ACP and then given triple promotion in 2 hours.

This can go on and on, but if you can answer these in your next piece it would indeed be enlightening!

  3. The international community must speak with one voice in condemning the Feb 7 coup.

  4. What the hell has international community got to do with this?

It is a coup. Period. Can we do something about it is the question.

International community accepts others have a right to live as well. We Maldivians see it different. No other religion can exist and if any Maldivian is found to be friends with, say, heaven forbid, an Israeli, we will be hung and roasted alive. Now, we have the effrontery to ask International Assistance?

  5. The majority of the people want Anni to resign for his illegal orders and continuous breach of the constitution.

He was drunk on 6th of Feb. when he ordered police and MNDF to leave artificial beach to allow a fighting among the people who had gathered there.

Anni tried to declare state of emergency on 6th and to abolish judiciary and Parliament on 6th Feb. which he failed .

Those people who had met Anni on 6th night and 7th morning should smell the alcohol from his mouth and this can not be denied .

I guess he resigned when he was influenced with the alcohol and then he realized what a blander he had done on the 8th.

Anni thinks that Maldives as his own and people are of his toy and he can play any game he want and the people will say yes to him.

The majority of the people do not want anni to be ever the president of the country and only MDP thugs want him to be the leader.

This is proven in the last parliament election where MDP had lost the two and non of the seats were able to win by the BAAGHEE MDP.

  6. Mody,
in the 21st century the majority's wishes are determined by a vote, not by 200 odd police officers and a 1000 from the opposition.
If Anni did anything which you have alleged him to have done, the steps are very clear, he can be impeached.
What happened on 7th Feb is wrong and two wrongs do not make a right.

  7. @Ismail Nazim "If any Maldivian is found to be friends with, say, heaven forbid, an Israeli, we will be hung and roasted alive. Now, we have the effrontery to ask International Assistance?"

    WOH...

Unbelievable, but I know it to be true... in many cases.

  8. mind , you are right majority is determined by vote. That is what i am saying. Anni got only 24.8% of the vote in the first round and then we all voted him in the second round because of the coalition not for him.

The last two parliamentary election shows that majority of the people do not want Anni and his supporter and that is why MDP lost the two seats and the current coalition had won the two seats.

Steps are clear to take Anni to court but Anni and his thugs are preventing it happening.

Most of the MDP people think that MDP is Anni and Anni is MDP and without Anni , no MDP.

This is why we are calling him a cult.

Anni thinks he is above the law and law is for the layman and not for him since he is among the highest
    class of human being.

He talks about human rights but he is quite racist and he thinks that he is of higher humankind than many of the Maldivian.

He treat differently towards Island people and he consider Male people are superior to others and Kenereege people are the elite among other few families .

  9. Hey mody, it's 2012, not 2008. 😛

Oh, and "He treat differently towards Island people and he consider Male people are superior to others and Kenereege people are the elite among other few families."

I think your drug-addled brain is confusing Masood Imad with Anni. Take a deep breath, go lie down somewhere.
