The former ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that it will mark the eighth anniversary of ‘Black Friday’ August 13, 2004 with a special rally and photo exhibition on Monday night.
The spontaneous gathering of the public at the Republic Square on August 12 and 13, 2004 against the regime of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was a watershed event in Maldivian history.
The unprecedented 22-hour pro-democracy demonstration was quashed in a brutal crackdown on the afternoon of August 13 by the former National Security Service (NSS).
Shortly after the crackdown and arrest of scores of demonstrators, President Gayoom declared a state of emergency, which lasted two months.
In August 2005, then-Chairperson of MDP, former President Mohamed Nasheed, was arrested on the first anniversary of Black Friday during a vigil at the Republic Square.
According to the party website, the rally planned for Monday night to mark the anniversary will feature a video presentation about torture.

I have come to greatly revere, the Small structured yet strong bodied, Golden Skinned, fiery Angels of the Indian Ocean, the Maldivian Islanders. I am awed by the irrepressible flame of dignity which burns in the souls of the Great Dhivehin, and I have seen, that this Power comes from your capacity for sacrifice.
Sacrifice is the Shield which makes it possible for there to be Peace in Your Paradise.
So, Peace, represented by Green on your flag, is surrounded by the symbol of sacrifice, Your Peace is shielded by willingness to Sacrifice.
Only when there is Peace, can the higher purposes of Life, symbolized by the Moon as the Symbol of Your Religion, be realized.

There was nothing done by Anni on balck Friday and he was hiding in UK .
Anni the champion of democracy only realized that Maldivian was matured enough to experience the democracy and raise their voice against the oppression.
Once he realized that on the black Friday, this guy Anni jumped over started to infest MDP and people to become the president of the nation.
This guy infested the people like a virus and whole MDP started fallen apart . This is why MDP could not win the election in the first round.
In 2005, MDP leadership took an oath not to have the protest in the republican square . This was something that was recommended by EU and other international body to MDP and MDP leadership agreed to the request of EU.
However, Anni by himself with Ahmed abbas and very few people went there and got arrested.
Point here is that Anni always have the habit of breaching the agreement and not to respect any opinion and suggestion by others and everyone else are required to follow his rules and play accordingly.
In fact that call by EU was very critical to Maldives to have an early election .There was an ongoing dialogue between Gayyoom government and MDP and EU to have an early election . But Anni action had contradicted to what was agreed between the parties and Gayyoom took the advantage of the situation to delay and then hang onto the power.
People like Ibra , Zaki , Munnavaru, and Gogo Latheef will be aware of this and they were the people who were engaged in this dialogue from MDP side.
