Five hundred homes is short of 10,000 promised, claims DQP

Minister for Housing and Transport Mohamed Aslam has announced the government will sign for the construction of 500 homes next month, after early agreements with an Indian contractor.

However the Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) claimed the government had promised to build 10,000 housing units across the Maldives before the end of 2009, including 900 flats in Hulhumale, and called for Aslam’s resignation over the delay.

Housing was one of the five key elements in the Maldivian Democratic Party’s election manifesto.

Secretary general of the DQP Abdulla Ameen accused the government of promising “wonderful dreams” it was unable to fulfil.

”It felt like he was going to build the [10,000] flats on spot,” Ameen said. “President Nasheed may build [a few] flats, but he is ignoring his pledge to build many more housing units.”

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing and Transport Ali Waheed said that the construction projects had slowed because the country’s financial condition.

“We cannot complete such big projects as soon as we close our eyes and open them,” he said, and noted that the minister “does not have to resign when [DQP president] Hassan Saeed says so.”

He reiterated that the government would fulfil its pledges within its term of power.

  1. MDP promised 10,000 housing units within the 5 year term. DPQ is the top liars in the face of the Earth.

  4. DQP's childish arguments are only superseded by their hiddeous looking logo. Hard to believe a bunch of PHDs can have all the time in the world in their hands and then the best they can come up with is this. I am so glad Hassan Saeed did not get the presidency through some sort a deal last time. He has absolutely no idea how politics, government or the economy operate to cry out this sort of nonsense.

  5. Agree, I dont understand how DQP reasons out things. I think it is still the immaturity. They are really doing more harm than good to afloat in the political arena.

If you have seen, last nights Q&A where Shareef and DRP member just outright denying privatization. It looks really funny to the people, when DRP complains about the failed health care services and when the government bring in the best in class in the world to manage, it is also not good. I dont know how they can survive, there isnt a way that is pleasing them.

This is putting in a dangerous path in the democracy. There is no responsible opposition in the Maldives. There is no way DRP or DQP with their current thinking and strategies do any good to the people of Maldives and hence any political future for that matter.

  6. People don't yet believe MDP has ignored their pledges. Only one year has passed and already we see things improved as they promised.

Ameen now sounds like Sahaf during Gulf war because he comes up and blubber things without making sense.

  7. Astrix usually have a village idiot in his comics, does this mean that we need a political idiot in Maldivian Politics.

If I remember correct first one we had who speaks through his butt was Mavota Sareef, followed by Imad Solih, followed by Umar Naseer and now a new star idiot is in our political village, yeah, you guess right, the name is Abdulla Ameen of DQP.
