Leaked footage from police HQ suggests opposition was prepared to use “military force” on Feb 7

Local television station Raaje TV aired a video clip on Sunday showing senior then-opposition figures inside police headquarters on February 7, prior to the resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

In the video, Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim makes a comment thanking Allah that former president Mohamed Nasheed resigned before the use of military force. Minivan News is currently seeking to obtain the unedited footage.

In the Raajje TV clip, Gasim first says, “that we are saved from this cruel regime…” Rajje TV then repeats the frame of Gasim saying, “that this ended without using the military, Allah [rest is unclear]”.

Raajje TV alleges the clip suggests Gasim was ready to resort to military force had Nasheed refused to resign. Minivan News was unable to reach Gasim at the time of press.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, shown standing directly in front of Gasim at the time, told Minivan News that he does not recollect Gasim’s statement. “It was very loud,” Thasmeen said.

The video clip depicts former opposition leaders at the time celebrating inside the police head quarters, exchanging hugs, and shouting “Allah Akbar” and “Thank Allah” shortly before Nasheed’s public television resignation of February 7.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) spokesperson Hamid Abdul Gafoor said he believed the video is proof of “Gasim’s blatant complicity in the coup d’état.” He also raised questions over the presence of opposition leaders inside the police HQ on February 7, while Nasheed remained held-up inside the military barracks.

Raajje TV introduces the video showing former opposition leaders in the crowd gathered at the Republic Square. Ahmed Nihan, Progressive Party of the Maldives’ (PPM) parliament member, then calls upon all political party leaders present to come to the Police HQ entrance.

According to Raaje Tv’s timeline of the video, inside the Police HQ, current Police Commissioner, Abdulla Riyaz tells the gathered group — which includes Thasmeen, Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) leader and current presidential advisor Dr Hassan Saeed, current Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel, the Islamic Ministry’s State Minister Mohamed Didi, new Deputy Commissioner of Police Hussein Waheed, current Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Samad, current Minister of State for Tourism, Arts and Culture Ahmed Shameem, Fonadhoo MP Ali Saleem, and the Adhaalath Party’s Asadullah Shafee — that he has now shared the mutinying police’s demands with the opposition leaders and asks them to give the police a response.

Raajje TV reporter notes that the deputy police commissioner Hussein Waheed had previously said he was not present at the Republican Square at the time of the mutiny. Abdulla Riyaz had said Waheed had been awarded the position after an interview process.

The reporter says that Gasim then praised the police for mutinying. However, this was not clear to Minivan News from the video.

The video then cuts to the former opposition leaders celebrating on receiving the news that Nasheed would resign. The group starts shouting “Allah Akbar.” Hassan Saeed then asks, “Are you sure? Confirmed?” to which an unknown voice replies, “Yeah.”

A second leaked video clip presents a clearer picture of Nasheed’s frenzied efforts to mobilise the military to stop the police mutiny. Nasheed, his foreign minister Ahmed Naseem, and his defense minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu order the soldiers to leave the barracks and put down the police mutiny.

“The entire nation is being destroyed, and you are doing nothing, citing command and what not…” Nasheed angrily tells the soldiers.

  2. Police mutiny must not be tolerated. There is absolutely no reason why then-opposition leaders must be in the Police HQ.

  3. I still cannot think of any reason why Gasim, Hassan Saeed, Abdulla Riyaz and these people have to be in the Police HQ? With more videos and information emerging, MDP & Nasheed's claim that this was a coup is being justified and solidified. After acting this way, so openly, do these COUP LEADERS honestly think that they will be able to convince the people that there is no questions over the legality and constitutionality over the transfer of power?

  4. I don't think anymore proof is needed. President Nasheed was ousted in a coup, i hope Gasim and all the businessmen rot in hell for what they did.

  6. Qasim, you may think you have done us a favour by kicking Nasheed off. You have robbed us off our votes. Do you have the ability to think beyond your greed. Do you see or hear what the majority of the country is calling for. Its pathetic to listen to your tapes. nothing else but money, power, money..! just because you have been able to sign a couple of our notes don't let that get into your head. No one in their right mind would chose you as their leader. you have become the worst of them all. do you realise the trap you have fallen into. it's all out there. the videos, your face every where. Remember when you were arrested during Maumoon's time and you were wailing in there. You have no place to hide any more. no one will listen to your wails ..so just be prepared to wallow in misery for the rest of your life!

  7. Undrstanding the whole thing will be extremely difficult for people who were sitting outside the country watching bits and pieces of the day's events on TV.

The comments here tell us that.

You will need to be living in Maldives from the beginning of this year in order to understand the emotions of the people on that day.

I still do not think it was a coup.
Nasheed resigned because there was no other option for him at that time.
It was no one other than Nasheed himself who created this situation for him.
If this is a coup, Hosni Mubarak was also ousted in a coup.

  8. Boooooh, none of these videos show Nasheed was threatenened in anyway by the police or armed forced. This is all MDP propaganda and lies. The second video infact shows he and his defence minister shouting at the armed forces as if they were their servants. That terrorist animal Anni is nothing but a big fat liar. May he rot in HELL. Amen.

  10. Who doubts that this is a coup. Would Jeff, Ibrahim Qasim and khadeeja Sanaa have any doubts that this is a coup.

Qasim said that Maumoon has not done anything for him. Ilyas with the support of Maumoon made Qasim by making him the STO agent for all STO fuel and cement. When he picked on Maumoon and Ilyas in 2008 we realized who he is and his morals. One should ask their children Ibrahim and Sanaa if they would vote for him if not he is their father. Qasim has an inferiority complex and an identity problem. The general Maldivian public has a bit more awareness than he thinks and he should realize that they would not vote for him. The youth are more educated than he or Deen thinks. You can not buy their votes any more, but may use people like Qasim and Deen. These 2 were made to believe who cared for Maldivians but when in fact they were using them. Qasim, do not b e a fool, Maldivians would not vote for you, they know who you are.

Like wise Mr. deen who was made to believe to be a person who cared for Maldivians only had his own interests. One only has to look at his practices from 1980 when he was only an employ at Bandos by Kerafaa Naseem. He took advantage of the situation and switched sides, worked with Maumoon for almost 30 years, switched, supported Anni and spoke so well of him at the launch of the Tax structure, switched once again and got involved with the revolution for the benefit of his foreign partner, Ong's tax benefits. Deen, if he has any values should resign as VP. You do not belong among that lot if you are what say you are. As many of you mates say, you must really be an imposter.

  11. yasir,
the video shows anni ordering armed forces. ure right he was shouting. but can u imagine what he must be going through when mariya and his sister etc etc was attacked by police. how would u feel knowing your loved ones are being attacked? and as a ruler he has the right to order the armed forces.that is not a problem. majority people of maldives voted for anni. dat means people trusted him to rule them. and the armed forces have to listen to anni even if they dont like him because they are paid by people's money and their job is to protect everyone including the president. they have no right to order him to resign. orders only come from above. president can order but police and mndf cant. they can only request. request can be fulfilled or even ignored.

  12. Opposition was prepared to use military force ? The second video shows Anni barking orders at Maldives military personnel and Anni ordering the Military to arrest the Police.

I have never heard of a country's president whho orders his Army to arrest all of its police personnel. When the Maldivian army realised the stupidity of Anni's orders, and refused to arrest the Police ad take arms against their comrades, then Anni realised that he was left with no choice but to resign.

That day was a victory for democracy. Maldivians proved that the Maldives will not revolve around the stupidity of one person who wanted to further the interests of his party and his activists.

I hope MDP can digest the fact soon that Anni did indeed resig, and the Maldives doesnt belong to MDP party anymore. The sooner MDP realises this, the better it will be for us common Maldivians and we will be able to lead a life free from crazy MDP protests, rioting, yelling and screaming filth, stone throwing, and torching places.

  15. To be honest, I'm beyond caring whether it was a coup or not. What I want to know is:

    (1) Why were these individual inside the Police HQ?

    (2) Waheed is trying to make it look he's picked the "best" individuals for his cabinet. Videos such as these clearly, and irrevocably show that Waheed has picked ALL those directly involved in the toppling down of Nasheed's government. Waheed, we need answers, fast!

    (3) Who is going to put the Deputy Commissioner on trial for lying?

  18. Joke of the century people!! This video of Gasim and the then opposition celebrating after ANNI agreed to resign was aired on VTV on 7th Feb for crying out loud!! We are not illiterate dumbos to jump into conclusions the second we ready your misleading headlines Ms Zaheena Rasheed! As a person who was closing following the incidents of that day, i personally believe that he meant to thank Allah for saving our country without confrontations of the MNDF and police. But sad to say if it was for Anni, he would have done that to hold on to his dictatorship

  19. Oh come on guys! Who cares its a coup or who did it? President Nasheed publicly said that he would cross all the lines to defend MDP's government. nobody remembers the 'Chaatarun Beyruvaa' speech? he detained a 'Judge'with no charges, no trial for nearly a month, over ruled the Supreme court, locked it once, i mean is that what you call democracy? Somebody had to pull him down. Under the oath that POlice and MNDF is, they ought to throw his government. he crossed the line. that's what's caused MDP this loss. Neither am i happy with the current government. but it doesn't mean i should support to bring Anni back to presidency. there is an old saying, if he bites you once, shame on him, if he does twice, shame on you. you get what i mean?

Anni is creating a cult, with lies and dramas. Just like previous regimes did. creating the image that 'I am the only one who can do this'. Just like there were thousands of people behind President Maumoon, despite the criticisms against his government, there are just as many people behind supporting Anni blindly. supporting a political leader doesn't kill your ability of making balanced judgement. Accept the fact that Nasheed did some mistakes and that's what lead MDP here. but no. He did everything right! he can't do a thing wrong. *Sigh*

so many people thought the same about president Maumoon. but Maumoon took decades to create that image, Anni took just three years to create a cult. And that still is the biggest threat to democracy. how can we speak about Democracy, when more than half of the nation, (including all these party freaks)doesn't have the liberty of making a sound judgment of their own. God gave us the freedom of making judgement between right and wrong, black and white. if we give up that freedom, to blindly support someone, then What freedom, What rights?

Clearly in this vid they talk about yes its confirmed at 1 he would resign. And also present with the then opposition crowd and lo and behold the now Commissioner of Police Riyaz ...

Riyaz was present when Nasheed gave in his resignation, in fact it was he who carried the letter ....

Use your intellect for Allahs sake

  23. There is problem in the translation you posted. In the video, the narrator says "Bagaavaai kuraameehun "merumah" Islam dheen angavaafaa vaairu' meaning in Islam, people who participate in coups should be slaughtered. In the translation, it says "When Islam forbids Coup d'etat". These two statements are very different to each other, and I just want to point this out as the translation might be misleading to what the narrator is actually saying.

  25. THEY HAVE USED RELIGION AS A TOOL TO PROVOKE AND INCITE PEOPLE TO ACT AGAINST A GOVERNMENT. ANNI MAY HAVE PUT UP SOME MONUMENTS IN ADDU, BUT THESE PEOPLE BLEW IT OUT OF PROPORTION FOR POLITICAL MOTIVE - THEY NEED TO TAKE DOWN AND BURN FAR MORE RELIGIOUSLY PROVOKING MANNEQUINS IN RETAIL SHOPS ALL ACROSS MAJEEDHEE MAGU - IF THEY REALLY MEANT WHAT THEY SAID.

ANNI MAY HAVE ACTED DRASTICALLY IN REFORMING JUDICIARY, BUT NEVERTHELESS HIS INTENTIONS WERE TRUE - THE JUDICIARY IS CORRUPT AND THEY HAVE PROVEN SO BY DROPPING CASES OF RED WAVE SALEEM AND JANGIYA NAZIM WEEKS AFTER GOVERNMENT WAS TOPPLED.

THIS GOVERNMENT IS NOT HERE FOR THE GOOD OF THE PEOPLE, THEY ARE HERE TO TAKE THINGS BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS AND PROTECT THE WEALTH OF A SELECTED FEW INDIVIDUALS WHO BECAME RICH IN THE PAST. THEY ARE NOT PAVING WAY FOR ANYONE ELSE TO ENJOY THE RICHES THIS COUNTRY HAS TO OFFER.

THEY ARE USING MEDIA TO CONFUSE THE PUBLIC, CREATE FEAR AND HAVOC. OLD TRICKS OF THE OLD REGIME. BUT I THINK MALDIVIANS ARE MUCH MORE SOPHISTICATED THAN THEY WERE WHEN THEIR MOUTHS WERE SHUT AND THOSE WHO DID OPEN WERE JAILED.

  28. Chairman Mau

These people in the video should join the list of traitors to Maldivian nation and should be put on history books with people like,
    1. Muhammed Shamsuddin and Katheeb Ahmed Muhiyyuddin (who conspired to bring Malabri)
    2. Ibrahim Luthfee and Sagarea
    3. Gasim
    4. Thasneem
    5. Hassan Saeed and all the Lady boy hugging gang

This is a plot my Khaaminee gang led by Maumoon and Yameen. Maumoon has been angered by Gasims leak audio conversation with Shiyaam where he is heard saying that Maumoon and his kids (Khaaminee clan) begged him to be the finance minister. Maumoon authorized the leak of this video to make sure that these fools will never get to compete with Khaaminee gang and to expose them in the history of Maldivian nation as Bhagees. Well done Mau..

    I see earthquakes and lightning.
    I see bad times today.:
    Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
    I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
    I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

    All right!
Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.

  30. Whilst all societies and political structures use both real and symbolic violence and the threat of to maintain order, in proportion to the population it seems absolutely excessive in the Maldives, WHY?? Is it because the ideological aspect of cultural hegemony is not routed in the concept of freedom of conscience and the essenctial sanctity of humanity, or is it because of scarce resources where you have to be aggressive politically or else be crushed?

    Or both?

  31. Congratulations on some extraordinary, great, UNBIASED journalism. :-).

We were very glad! Your article and the subject matter you reported to us suggested that President Waheed is delivering on his promise of working towards a free unfettered press.

I must say we (my friends &I) were excited about your head lines imagining some new hard evidence had cropped up until my son read it out aloud to our over keen ears. By the time he finished we were all holding our sides and rolling in laughter. We guessed that you might have been away from Male on the 7th when this footage was red hot breaking news!& the site of Mr Gassim sobbing and thanking His Creator was the target of much amusement.

These clips amongst many other things demonstrates to the whole world the extent to which Mr Gassim was victimised. Victimisations of political opponents are straight out of the manuals of authoritarian rulers in banana republics. Considering what these footages reveal to the whole world- AND THE FOOTAGE REVEALS SUCH A LOT!!!!; Raaje TV has to our great amusement with much fanfare shot its own foot. 🙂

THESE FOOTAGES ALSO DEMONSTRATES TO US THE REASONS FOR THE TEPID REACTION OF THE INTERNATIOL COMMUNITY TO THIS WHOLE SAGA, AND SUCH FAST RECOGNITION OF PRESIDENT WAHEEDS GOVT. –i.e. The rejection of the COUP story 24 hrs. later!

Clearly President Nasheed needs to URGENTLY get himself some good, CLEARHEADED, EDUCATED advisors with the Country as their first priority rather than their pockets.

Gosh! Stop blaming Riyaz and Nazim. They just took the lead because they were respected among the military and police personals. Ehen noonas, knowing that these people had “no hysiyyathu” why did Tholhath give them permission to enter the MNDF headquarters? My intellect tells me that hence it would be them who will be escorting Anni to the President’s Office 😀

  33. @sigh -

I think you are way off point here. The thousands of people protesting against Waheed's illegitimate government is not crying out to just to replace him with Nasheed. What they are protesting so vehemently against is the theft of the promise of democracy that was just beginning to take root in the Maldives. An election was just around the corner in 2013 and no one apart from the MDP members would have been upset if Nasheed lost the presidency through the ballot box. But now, the damage that has been done to the future of the nascent democracy in the Maldives is far greater than any damage Nasheed has done or could have done if he had been allowed to complete his presidential term. Its not just the MDP or Nasheed's "cult following" that are on the streets today. Its also the many who never belonged to any political party but support democracy and beleived in the future of the country. This coup by a few greedy politicians and their business allies has robbed so much from the people of the Maldives. Indeed, never has so much been robbed from the people of the Maldives by so few!

  35. It was a military coup in which the MNDF, backed by the police, ousted the elected president yet they hate them called rebels and arrest anyone who called them so. Shouting at the police of MNDF is not an arrestable offence. The rule of law suggests that law is supreme over all others.

This afternoon a man was taken in a police vehicle in front of the STO supermart. He was said to have shouted some MNDF men rebels. The police and MNDF refused or failed to protect the elected president Mr Nasheed and removed him from power by force against the law.

One may wonder what the source of the police power is. If that's the law why can they break it?

It is felt that even if the law abolishes the police and military establishments they would not accept and continue in power. So, though these institutions were created by law it's not why they exist now. If they exist because of the law they must follow the law and must not break it and exist still.

  38. All the evidence to proove that it is a coup is available to the general public,...so why are the authorities not doing anything? The parliament should investigate......pls make the information availble to the public. Why had the speaker not said anything to justify his actions on the 7th Feb, why is he scilent, seems like he is also a coup member. Why is PG not taking action? Why are the Police and MNDF ppl who are involved in the mutiny still doing their duties? It's obvious that Dr. Waheed was fully aware of this whole plan. Dr. Waheed is responsible for the brutal actions of Police and MNDF on the 8th, even if anybody else was giving command. What these idiots don't understand is Maumoon and Yamin the masters of the game are safe while the stupid are getting framed. This is what happens when ppl get too greedy. May Allah save our nation from this desaster.....and make it a safe place. Speaker of the parliament, PG please wake up and deliver justice for this country,....if you're unfit to do your job please leave and go home.

How can a commoner like Riyaz & others enter the Police HQ and have meetings?? I had no idea that Police Meeting rooms were rented out to Public..

Doesnt this create even a seed of doubt in your mind that maybe the intentions are not as honorable as the current Govt is claiming..a fleeting second of doubt in your mind questioning the legitimacy & legality of this present govt is enough for us to advocate for an early election!!
