Party rhetoric heats up as elections approach

President Mohamed Nasheed has claimed that housing programmes and the Veshi Fahi Male’ programme could only be implemented “perfectly” if islanders elected MDP councilors in the local council elections.

Nasheed and the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), including ‘honorary leader’ former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, have been visiting islands across the nation to campaign for the upcoming Local Council Elections, scheduled to be held on February 5.

The Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), led by former Attorney General Dr Hassan Saeed, has meanwhile alleged that the MDP government has failed to fulfill its election pledges, “and it is almost the end of their term.”

”There is not even a drawing of the flats that the President pledged to built within six months following the parliamentary elections,” said the DQP in a statement. ”The talks that he gave in many islands claiming that he would establish airports and sewerage systems also turned out be nothing but dreams.”

DQP claimed that during the recent two years, the government-appointed councilors had worked to promote MDP.

”There are only a few days left of the MDP government’s term, and not one of the 10,000 flats he has pledged have been built so far,” DQP said. ”For two years MDP councilors were in the islands and no pledge was fulfilled – this proves that MDP councilors have failed.”

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Imthiyaz Fahmy meanwhile claimed that a vote given to the opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) would be “wasted”.

‘’MDP is a party that makes pledges and fulfills pledges,’’ said Imthiyaz. “As MDP is in administration today, development and progress can only be brought about by electing a person that supports MDP.’’

He said that the “wisest” people would “choose to follow success”.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom will speak at an opposition rally in Male’ this evening.

  1. I think the Maldivians are aware you cannot build flats in one day and with a bankrupt treasury, one has to find money before we could do anything. First we are trying to put a broken house in order. EX AG must stop talking. No one is going to believe him. All these crooks are worried about themselves not us. Vote for MDP and for a better future.

  2. Voting for opposition for Majlis is a bad experience. They block every project that govt. plans. That itself is reason why people should not vote for the opposition. Dont get fooled by their high might talks. The common people of this country is suffering due to their own selfish deliberations in Majlis. I am not for any party but wish party system will be abolished so that there is peace in this country. Maumoon should be ashamed to talk of being cautious about vote counting. Has he forgotten how he used the peoples vote. 100% from most island. He should stop living in a dream. He acts as though he has not harmed anyone in his life. People have lost their lives because of him. He cheated on people using religion. If he is so good a person he should spent more time with his wife who is so sick that she can hardly walk.

  3. Naina your comment is very true. We gave majority to DRP & PA coalition for them to check and balance the government but not to stop it functioning. We have seen the attitude of these power hungry MPs and based on their actions could not support any opposition. What have they done to make our life better?

  4. @ Jameela & Naina

Agree with U. At least 'things' are moving now. Anni has no magic wand. He must be given chance/time to prove himself.

  5. @ Z-nut

"Anni has no magic wand. He must be given chance/time to prove himself."

    Now you are telling?

What happened to the promise of running Maldives Inc. with one laptop and a resort?

It's mid-term, and we already want to change this Zionist loving, goo for nothing, government.

  6. @heck
How much are you being paid to promote DRP propaganda? Get this straight, we do not need maumoon who sat in his bloody palace eating our money. It is quite surprising that there are islands he hasn't visited in his 30 years of term. Oh i'm sorry. Is 30 years too less. does he need another 30 years to visit the nationals of our small country?
Most of us voted for President Nasheed, in support for MDP, but now we vote MDP in support for President Nasheed. He is more than what we expected. More than what we dreamt for a president.

"How much are you being paid to promote DRP propaganda?"

Answer: Nothing - I am not DRP. I voted Anni's Wathan Edhey Coalition!
