Religious NGOs to hold “protest to protect Islam” on December 23

A coalition of religious NGOs have claimed that 100,000 people will join a protest in December “to protect Islam”, and called on “all Maldivians to take part”.

Speaking to the press at the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) studio, President of the NGO Coalition Mohamed Didi said that more than 127 local NGOs, music clubs, political parties and Island Councils would take part in the protest on December 23.

According to MNBC, Didi said the protest was not a movement against the government but a movement “against all un-Islamic ideas.”

Opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Deputy Leader Ibrahim ‘Mavota’ Shareef warned that “our faith will not be shaken by something someone says, but because of these things it might turn the non-muslims living in neighboring countries against us.’’

MNBC reported that the People’s Alliance Party (PA) had called on parents to bring children to the gathering.

Local newspaper Sun quoted Didi as saying that the government had been conducting many activities with the motive of erasing Islam from the country, and claimed that the NGO coalition was “left with no other choice but to protest to protect Islam.”

Senior officials from the Adhaalath Party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) and Jumhoree Party (JP) were present at today’s meeting.

Claims that national monuments placed in Addu for the SAARC Summit were idolatrous and hostility towards a call by UN Human Rights Ambassador Navi Pillay for a national debate on flogging sparked protests in Male’ recently.

“This practice constitutes one of the most inhumane and degrading forms of violence against women, and should have no place in the legal framework of a democratic country,” Pillay said, referring to the practice of flogging a punishment for fornication.

Press Secretary for the President Mohamed Zuhair did not respond to Minivan News at time of press.

  3. Can someone tell me where in Quran it says if you are caught drunk you have to be thrash with forty lashes.

Maldivian system has trash lots of people I know, the day light out of them for boozing, hence I have read the Quran translation looking for this "Dheenu ge Hahdhu" and could not find.

Perhaps I should read "Hadhees" perhaps I will find there. I really wonder if there are 100 per cent genuine "hadhees" es.

I suppose I should visit one of these scholars for answer's. Surely Quran must have an answer.

  4. Hey Religious NGO's, if you are not aware, please open you senses, Allah has been protecting Islam from the time immemorial, Allah doesn't need your Afghanistan type help. You people are just a bunch of Mischief makers.

  5. The whole purpose of religion is to brainwash the masses into a form of hysteria and the human race has been doing that for millenia. This is just another manifestation and continuation of that ridiculous effort. There is not an ounce of sincerity in anyone involved with it. For the most part, they are trying to score some cheap political points. These are all opportunits through and through!

Indeed, Allah has protected Islam and will protect Islam forever and Islam doesn't need a group of intolerant and narrow minded folk to go on demonstrations to protect itself. If 100,000 are prepared to take part in these demonstrations, I wonder about the percentage of these people actually practice Islam the way Allah asks them to! I bet that less that 5% will be the answer.

We should have a counter demonstration against this to wake up people to these opportunists who are misleading the weak minded.

  6. Islam is declared complete and the Religion of God who had promised in the Holy Book itself that He would protect His Religion. Why don't the Muslims leave it to Him to protect Islam and the Book? Does this mean they don't or could not believe in God that He will preserve the Religion and the Book that they are so concerned about Islam disappearing or being harmed by man?

In fact, it is a visible sign that Muslims cannot trust God's promise or they would not make theirs the responsibility of protection and preservation of Islam and the Scripture. It is claimed that Islam will survive be it the whole world is against it. The whole world comprises the minority Moslems, among others, and if all the people on the surface of the earth turn against it that includes Moslems who would reject Islam. Where then will the Religion exist? In Heaven? Unfortunately, if all the Muslims become infidel none will go to Heaven to adopt Islam even in the Heaven!

  7. Maryam, the punishment of a person taking wine (alcohol) on the earth is that he will not get wine in the Heaven (Bukhari 5147 and Muslim 3736 narrated from Abd-Allaah ibn Umar). Beware! Alcohol drinking is allowed in the Afterlife, i.e., in the Heaven. But it is forbidden and cursed on the earth. Why? Is the Heaven not belonged to Allah or His Religion doesn't apply there?

Well the punishment of a drinker of alcohol in this world is flogging as Prophet Muhammad is said to have flogged someone who drank wine with two palm branches stripped of their leaves and with shoes (reported by Muslim 3281 from Anas). There is disagreement as to the number of lashes. However, the view of the majority of scholars is eighty lashes for a freeman and forty for others.

  8. this is an example of biased news reporting - to simply mislead the international organisations..

the protest is planned by secular NGOs (more than 100 NGOs) and Maldivian public in general

  9. How do you mere mortals propose to protect Islam? Are you going to build a fortress around it? Why don't you let Allah do his job and use your little brains to concentrate on protecting your own sanity?

  10. PPL are flogged for drinking.

This is a good example of what I hate so passionately about the application of such laws in the Maldives.

Let me start by saying that I understood the essence of Islam to be Justice for the Poor and Oppressed, as expression of the Mercy of Allah. That is why I became a Muslim years ago.

Contrary to what I have been accused of, at that time, I believed in Islam so deep in my heart. I felt it, it pierced my heart like an arrow of truth.

Yet what I see have seen of Islam in the Maldives has really made me detest any religious law. I see the rich and powerful, and believe you me I see it, I see them party so hard, get drunk as skunks, and then, support the implementation of whipping the poor for drinking. I actually don't care that they drink, but, then, to be so morally cowardly so as to want to whip other drinkers publically to keep face!

I see Islam being used as a tool for oppressing the weak and the poor, in order to keep the luxurious, hedonistic lifestyles of those who control the law!

Don't ask Allah for Justice, because, you might be sad enough to see you do just get it!

  16. Lets ponder if everything in Quran are words of Allah :
    AL-FATIHA – THE OPENING(1:1-7)
[1] In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
[2] All praise is for Allah, the ‘Lord’ of the Worlds.
    [3] The Compassionate, the Merciful.
[4] Master of the Day of Judgment.
[5] O’Allah! You Alone we worship and You Alone we call on for help.
[6] O’Allah! Guide us to The Right Way.
[7] The Way of those whom You have favored; not of those who have earned Your
wrath, or of those who have lost The Way.

Seems someone else is praising Allah in this Sura in Quran. So everything in Quran can’t be from Allah.

  17. Ohhh..protest wont do any good. If you have built a good foundation than you dont need to scream on every street making others life difficult. We talk about climate change but we throw all sorts of plastic bags on the beaches and everywhere. Maldivians know only know to protest. You people are no more than a devil.
    This is a sick society..

    which is only Allah's word

may be that you have read only sura al fatiha

just pray that Allah guide u all to the the true religion of islam; which is only the the true religion
    @ musician
if u think Maldives is a sick society the just be some where else

  19. Thank You Ahmed Anees but it is no help until I know if these "Hadhees's are 100 per cent genuine, Whether its Bukhari, Muslim or who ever who collected them, actual question is are there 100 per cent original Hadhees.

  20. Maryam, If the Quran doesn't say there is flogging for drinking, then the simple truth is nobody should be thrashed for drinking alcohol.

I really don't think there are 100 % genuine Hadhees, Why on earth do you need Hadhees when these scholars are howling that everything is in the Quran to achieve salvation.

  21. While the organizers are adamant that the purpose of this whole thing is purely in the interest of islam, one cannot but help wonder. There is an air of political underpinning to the whole affair, and I for one, would like to question their true motives. l believe that their stated catalysts (the monument fiasco and the pillay scandal) are weak at best - far greater atrocities against islam have been commited in the past. Then why, I ask, has this become an issue now?

would it not be better to call into question the various blatant atrocities (such as the whole underage concubine business) commited by the "religious" people?

PROTESTING to protect islam is the most ridiculous idea I've heard of. Normally, when something is under threat of extinction you fight to revive and sustain it. Why is the making noise and drawing (international) attention to the "activities" and "failures" of the *current* government in ANY way an act to PROTECT ISLAM?

would it not be better to say, protest against the education system for failing to inculcate the values of islam into the current generations? would it not be better to protest against society at large for failing to preserve the values of islam in the first place? would it not be better to protest against parents who so easily discarded their *responsibilities*?

It seems to me that the average "islamic scholar" still takes the average maldivian to be a fool (if you don't mind my saying). They preach and try to force religion upon the youth and wonder why they fail when they fail. I have yet to see a throughly thought out, well researched initiative to educate people with good objectivity and scientific discourse (don't you dare say science is haraam now) instead of the run of the mill yahala yahala mantra.

I would like to point out that when Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) set out to spread the word of Islam he did not organize a massive protest against "un-islamic" activity. He did NOT go to war for such as either (if you believe so, I implore you to revisit your text books). Islam was spread with reason and understanding, not with tomfoolery.

  22. i think im going to make a statement similar to ones made by religious zealots, such as if you do not vote against this you are not a muslim but i think mine stands closer to truth.
    here it is :
"anyone who goes to this protest is saying they dont beleive God can protect Islam and have no faith in the doctrine they are so fervant to protect"

    what would you say?
forget abt the argument this is all politics, ppl know that, and they are in denial, refuse to beleive all of this is political.

  23. The biggest blunder to Islam is the sealing of Quran by those who composed Quran as unchangeable words of Gods. And during the Islamic history all political powers were used to protect it instead of overhauling the Quran discarding all irrational and absurdity in it. There is no doubt the Quran has been composed after death of prophet and Quran is full of errors and incoherent reading and full of absurdity. If Mullah are trying to project Islam from Quran and Hadhees in which there are so many thing that does not fit to 20st century mentality, these Mullahs are simply disgracing the prophet and Islam, because they can’t justify some of the things that they claim Islamic by quoting Quran and Hadhees.

  24. The True Muslim, that's a good suggestions. By the way, the Chapter Opening is possibly a set of verses of prayers that Allah has sent to Moslems and is to be repeated a number of times in our prayers. However, there is no suggestion that these words were meant to be prayers nor are the believers called upon to read these prayers. Else, these words seem to be ones addressed to Allah rather than Allah addressing them to the believers through the Prophet.

Contextually, sometimes, it appears that Allah speaks on behalf of himself and others as in, " Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them," Chapter 2, Al-Baqara, Verse 3. Notice the word We here.

  26. If we look at drinking and fornication, we all understand without any doubt that these things must be haraam or abstained from.

Any woman shall be either a mother, a sister or a daughter of someone. Who could tolerate a fornication with his or her mother, sister or daughter? That's one of the main reasons Islam has forbidden Muslims not to commit fornication.

When one falls sick, he or she goes to a doctor. Whenever we visit a doctor due to a cardiac or cancer like disease, the cardiologists keep us asking if the patient is drinking, smoking, or not having adequate sleep at night and similar questions. Here I think there is a lesson for those who think over the doctor's questions. Now tell me...Shouldn't drinking & be haraam (unlawful) or halaal (lawful) to lead a healthy life??? If a father dies with a disease caused by drinking or smoking, his wife and kids shall not suffer? If so, is it fair?

Since the Quran is revealed in Arabic, I think one must study Arabic & Quranic studies before commenting or confusing like the following:

Contextually, sometimes, it appears that Allah speaks on behalf of himself and others as in, ” Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,” Chapter 2, Al-Baqara, Verse 3. Notice the word We here.

  27. Malik :: Book 47 : Hadith 47.4.15

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Beware of suspicion. Suspicion is the most untrue speech. Do not spy and do not eavesdrop. Do not compete with each other and do not envy each other and do not hate each other and do not shun each other. Be slaves of Allah, brothers."

  28. Are these 'Religious NGOs' really necessary? They are mostly made up of fat moronic thugs whose only remit......like that of the saudi religious police......is to stop people from having sex. Why don't you round them all up and dump them on some uninhabited atoll?
Why do muslims feel it necessary to go on hysterical protest marches to 'protect islam' at the slightest perceived slight to their religion? I don't see hindus frothing at the mouth and going apoplectic at the constant denigration of hinduism by muslims.
Mrs Pillay was right in her comments. The Maldives has some of the most archaic laws in the world today. Flogging women in public and banning other religions contravenes the UN charter on human rights......regardless of what sharia law stipulates. Most non muslim Maldivians......and there are thousands......end up living in India. Maldives should be kicked out of the UN if your primitive laws are not changed.

  29. Q.18:86-90
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: "O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness."
    Then followed he (another) way,
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun.
If we look at this Ayath in Quran, this is like a story of one thousand one nights. This is totally non sense and some Mullahs may try to twist very straight forward passage where the story teller projects the world in the eyes of an average Middle Age Arab Bedouin man who thought the sun sets and rises in a specific place in a specific time. How any sane person will ever think this are the words of Almighty who knows everything who created the sun earth and everything in the universe. If there is single rubbish in the Quran that we van clearly see, we can come to conclusion that there are so many thing that the composer of Quran has added to Quran to make it more interesting to those ignorant Arabs.

  31. In the fifth age, humanity will realize its spiritual destiny. In the sixth age, we will realize God within ourselves says:

n the mythology of the Aztecs, the first age of mankind ended with the animals devouring humans. The second age was finished by wind, the third by fire, and the fourth by water. The present fifth epoch is called Nahui-Olin (Sun of Earthquake), which began in 3113 BC and will end on December 24, 2011

The Mayan calendar comes to an end on Sunday, December 23. Only a few people will survive the catastrophe that ensues. In the fifth age, humanity will realize its spiritual destiny. In the sixth age, we will realize God within ourselves, and in the seventh age we will become so spiritual that we will be telepathic.

  32. Haha, my estimate for their numbers is close to around....10,000 at the most. 100,000, is just a joke. And the guy who said these are 'secular' NGO's, he's trying to mislead everyone into believing that these NGO's are somehow very nice, educated people who are capable to rational thinking. Actually, these are the same guys who wanted to behead Nazim when he declared his apostasy, and also the same guys who want to flog/behead Navi Pillay. These are the same guys who send their kids to Pakistani Madrassas to get military training from terror groups. These are the same guys who say democracy is haram and that they need to establish a global caliphate by eliminating the entire non-muslim populations.

  33. There is something very strange about the fact, in Qur'an, Allah refers to him/her self as WE, here are some examples;

"So We opened the gates of heaven, with water pouring forth. And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs. So the waters met (and rose) to the extent decreed. But We bore him on an (Ark) made of broad planks and caulked with palm-fiber: She floats under Our eyes (and care): a recompense to one who had been rejected (with scorn)! And We have left this as a Sign (for all time): then is there any that will receive admonition? But how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning?" (al-Qamar 54:9-16)

“We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).” (al-Hijr 15:9)

“We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, but for just ends. And the Hour is surely coming” (al-Hijr 15:85)

“And among His Signs is this: thou seest the earth barren and desolate; but when We send down rain to it, it is stirred to life and yields increase. Truly, He Who gives life to the (dead) earth can surely give life to (men) who are dead. For He has power over all things.” (Fussilat 41:39)

“Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to Our Servants sent (by Us). That they would certainly be assisted. And that Our forces, they surely must conquer. So turn thou away from them for a little while. And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see. Do they wish (indeed) to hurry on our Punishment? But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not) (al-Saffat 37:171-177)

    and now here is the kicker;

The word "We" has been used in the Qur'an 496 times. That s a lot of "we" to talk about one self, don't you think?
