Couple who died in Kuredu crash had been married for just seven days

The young couple who died following a quad bike accident at Kuredu Island Resort early on Saturday morning have been identified in the UK press as Emma and Jonathan Gray.

The two British honeymooners, who were aged in their mid-twenties and had a six-month old child, had only been married for seven days when the quad bike they were riding on as passengers crashed into a tree, reported the Daily Mail, among others.

The driver, a foreign national who has not yet been formally identified by police, was injured in the accident and is reportedly being treated in ADK Hospital in Male’. Minivan News understands that the driver was not a staff member at the resort.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam confirmed that the vehicle involved in the incident – initially reported in the local media to be a golf buggy of the kind commonly used in the Maldives to transport guests and their luggage – was a quad bike.

The vehicle collided with a tree and police were informed by resort management at 4:15am that two guests had been found with injuries.

Local newspaper Haveeru reported that Jonathan Gray died at the scene of the incident while Emma Gray died before she could be taken to hospital for treatment.

“Police are investigating how this incident occurred. We are confident at this point that it was an accident,” Shiyam told Minivan News.

Minivan News understands that the UK High Commission is assisting with the investigation.

The resort has meanwhile told media that it is unable to make a statement while the incident is being investigated by police.

Another British national, 42-year old Sharon Duval, died on Kuredu in October 2010, also while honeymooning with her husband, after her body was found on the beach by another guest.

An Oxfordshire inquest into Duval’s death ruled out “any third party involvement” while a portmortem conducted in the UK found that her blood alcohol level was three and a half times the legal UK driving limit, and gave the cause of death as accidental drowning with a contribution of alcohol intoxication.

Traffic accidents (which this was, even though on a resort island) are always the fault of someone, unless it was an act of God (or Allah). There is no such thing as a pure accident. I wonder if the rider of the quad bike was tested for his alcohol level, which may well have been a factor.

  4. It is very clear that person would have provided different varieties free booze and they would have had a gala time nincompoop son of the resort owner. This maybe how they met their faith!

  9. what sad news, having been to kuredu myself i struggle to understand how this happened as the island is so small there is no need for transport, we certainly saw no quad bikes when we were there just the golf buggies which were used to transport luggage etc, i also cannot see where they found the clear space surely needed to get the speed to cause this much damage, if it was the son the only way from that island at night is by sea plane?? did anyone hear that leave?? someone needs to take responsibility for this tragic accident.
    very sad news, very sad.

  10. Sorry to hear this story but this could have happen elsewhere in the world. i hear these kind of stories almost every Monday morning on the news paper "Drunk Driver dead". Mostly nobody has the intention of killing some body however when you consume a lot of alcohol you are not in your normal level of making the right decision. There are plenty of women and men which wakes up the next morning and feel so bad cause what they did on the night or over night is horrible.

Its a loss of life...its extreamly sad, but the person who has posted comments in this forum called "Universal Truth" absolutely has no clue of the story and just trying to create the "Big story" out of the blue.

I really hope people will learn a lesson out of mistakes and will not let them be repeated in the future.

The most saves way of travel is Airplane...however been inspected before flight and after flight unfortunately sometime people has face horrible incidents, but what happen good is the decision makers or the policy makers makes sure that those incident wont be repeated in future plus they also update the safety manual etc...

I am sad but also i am happy in a way...as for sure this incident will be a reminder for each driver in kuredu plus their policy and decision makers...and all of them will make a kuredu a much safer place for their customers in future.

  11. Universal clearly works on the Island and is speaking the nearest to truth account.. The resort owners will no doubt protect their interest and any wrong-doing by their family or staff.
I hope the Maldives police and the Kuredu resort deal with this incident with decorum, respect, dignity and moreover with a thought to the families that were involved. That includes all guests that have been affected by this tragic incident
The sad thing is that two youngsters have died leaving an infant baby parentless.

    RIP the couple!

  19. I got back from there on Thursday, it is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. This is a tragedy, the poor child.

As someone said I can't see where they could hit a significant speed, there are no roads?! I saw 1 quad bike, each time it was doing 10mph tops and I only saw 4 motor vehicles on the island.

Thoughts also with Laura on the island who I'm sure will be distraught.

  20. Thank you, Minivan News, for letting me know that Jonathan was not the driver. I knew him as a child for 4 years.

He also leaves his twin brother and two other brothers.

May the Creator have mercy on us all.

  21. A great tragedy. May their souls RIP. I do hope that the government get to grips with the resorts, once and for all regarding these types of incidents.

It should be a criminal offence to transport any guests on any form of vehicle in a tourist resort unless it has been specifically licensed to do so. Anyone doing that should face severe penalties and ultimately the resort and its management should be held responsible.

This is not just an issue for Kredhu, but an issue for the whole tourism industry. Clean up your act! You're totally responsible for the safety and well being of your guests at all times. Never forget that.

  22. After the accident the driver(owners son) ran off without informing the authorities of the resort which may lead to the death of Emma cos she died while they were trying to transfer her to a near by island hospital .. People try to hide this issue .. Money can't buy everything the driver of the quad bike should be deported from Maldives

  23. hey everyone. the hotel owner's son ( Filip Petre ) is the culprit and he is still in hosital ( ADK Hospital in Male' the capital of Maldives ). whole of maldives knows it now even though the maldivian police is still trying to hide it. no one knows why? ok guys the story is as follows:

the couple were offered a ride back to their water bungalow after a wine part it seems by the elder son of the resort owner mr. lars petre. it seems the couple climbed on to the front of the bike. and yes it was an accident but you all can imagine the bike hitting a tree with the couple in the front railings and the bike was speeding. they both got smashed in to the tree and the husband died immediately. it's really sad but this is the news from kuredu.

  24. i have heard that the hotel owners son is still in adk hospital.

so it seems the culprit is him.

and the word is that the couple was offered a ride back to their water bungalow after a wine party.

this very well seems an accident and a speeding quad bike hitting a tree with the couple on the front railings of the bike can be very cruel.

  27. I do a reflexion. What does a quad in a maldivian resort? and I've been in Kuredu 2 times. In the resort exist rules, so the resort is responsible of the clients

  29. Dear All,
It is true that a family member drove the bike to our knowledge from a direct info from the resort. The son was under shock as he was badly injured himself. Kuredu is 40 minutes by seaplane away from Male, so he can not and would not run off. He called straight for help. We understand that the couple (god bless them and their family) was so drunk that they would not find their way. a family member offered to drive them and due to bad weather condition he drove a little faster, in order not to get them wet. a tire burst made the quad bike uncontrollable at this second.....
Let's wait and see what the outcome is before we judge someone. It's not our job to judge, law is doing that. Let's pray for the families.....

  30. This is an absolute tragedy & being regular visitors to Kuredu we have found this very sad for both the grieving families also those on the Island includig the staff who are all amazing. I am sure this is a tragic accident & could have happened to anyone including ourselves as we have spent many a night there a little worse for ware. We have never found any member of staff on the island anything but pleasant & at your service but unfortunately on this occassion an accident occurred, nobody's fault. For those people out there wishing to spread gossip think of those it is affecting, the couples family, their son, the staff & visitors on the island who are still there. Accidents happen every day however it is negative people who make the situation worse. I think everyone should leave it to the local authority to make their minds up about the accident & let our thoughts be with the couples family rather than the gossip

  31. IF THEY WERE SO DRUNK HOW WOULD THEY HOLD ON TO THE QUAD WHEN IT IS ONLY DESIGNED FOR ONE PERSON ..... The resort owners son should never given them a lift he is totally responsible for their deaths and should get a long jail term.... The person that commented that they were to drunk and would not find there accomadation is so niave as to say that they drove fast so they did not get wet to stupid to be real ... AT THE END OF THE DAY NO ONE IN THERE RIGHT MIND WOULD DRIVE THEM WHEN THE QUAD IS DESIGNED FOR ONE PERSON.... LOCK HIM UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEY ....

  32. come on guys, give the guy a break! u wouldnt say that if it happened to any of your family members. Filip petre wouldnt intentionally harm someone and he is paying the price for this accident. It is enough that he have to live with this incident for his whole life and I am sure he is still regretting what happened. Since he is cooperating with the police, let the police do their work. who are you people to criticise what the police do and who are you all to criticise on behalf of the deeased's family. We all shouldnt blame anyone unless the authorities have given their final report on this case.
