DRP MP proposes amendment to lower age of juveniles from 18 to 16

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MP and Youth Wing’s head Ahmed Mahlouf has presented an amendment to the parliament to designate persons under the age of 16 years as juveniles.

Currently persons under the age of 18 are legally considered as juveniles.

”The purpose to change the age is due to the significant increase in involvement of minors in crimes sinister in nature, and they cannot be sentenced to the full extent as they are considered as minors,” said Mahlouf. ”Although they are considered as minors, they are sometimes very dangerous.”

Mahlouf said he has noted that children of the age 16-18 are more likely to be engaged in criminal activities because many finished their ordinary level education at the age of 16, and most of them did not prefer further studies which was leading them to the wrong path.

”They do not prefer or get the opportunity for further studies but they cannot even be employed because they are considered as minors,” he said. ”In a religious perspective also it is more appropriate to set the age of 16 as adults.”

Of the roughly 10,000 students who sit their O’level exams each year in the Maldives 8000 fail, although the pass rate is slowly improving.

Mahlouf also presented an bill to regulate the resort security which requires each resort and hotel to have a security system approved by police.

”This was submitted considering the recent attempts to rob resorts in the Maldives which could eventually effect the entire economy of the country,” Mahlouf said. ”The bill also requires police to supervise the security of the resorts annually.”

Recently, a 20 year-old man was found dead floating on the lagoon of Baros Island Resort and Spa, allegedly one of the seven persons that went to rob the island.

Mahlouf also said a DRP Youth Wing’s rally will be held Friday night near the Tsunami Monument where senior members of the party will address people about gang violence.

  1. The whole world has given much thought to the issue of children and has set 18 as the cut off age for minors under the convention of the rights of the child. What Mahloof is suggesting is like moving the goal post when your team is unable to score. Mahloof would improve his players not shift the goal post. This sounds like a suggestion comming from the MP who abused a minor and trying to make the minor an adult before his case goes before the court,

  4. We cannot bring the age of juveniles to 16,in order to protect the vulnerable young people. But we do need think about how this country is going to deal with crimes committed by under-aged. We cannot simply let them go nor can we jail them like adult criminals. Young people committing crime has not had a chance to live and choose and the system do carry a huge responsibility towards our young people. They must have a chance to a better life out of jail which requires the State to consider an education and rehabilitation to help them re-integrate in to the Society later.

  6. Yes! By all means, this should solve all our problems. Teenagers scare the living crap out of us. They are to blame for all our troubles. More teenagers in jail means less demand for jobs = no worries for the governors of this state. Yay! democracy wins. Egypt and Libya can kiss our tush 😀

  7. Now look at them – fighting even when they are down. Fighting to ensure that no Maldivian can live in peace, no Maldivian child can enjoy their childhood.

The DRP deserves more than to be liquidated. They deserve a fate worse than death.

  8. They do all this talking about ‘MDP selling out religion’ – but the previous regime enforced a ’100% islamic state’ by hook and by crook, just to get free oil handouts from OPEC.

What did they do to the free oil?. They sold it to Burma to fund their drug dealing empire. Is that not the ultimate ‘selling of religion’?.

Now look at them – fighting even when they are down. Fighting to ensure that no Maldivian can live in peace, no Maldivian child can enjoy their childhood.

Oh, and for all the people talking about cyber sex pictures, cyber-sex does not equate child abuse. And in case you’re interested, it’s almost always ‘mullah’ and mullah wannabes caught in child abuse cases. And it is almost always ‘mullah jurisdiction’ (I refuse to call it islamic jurisdiction) that lets them off scot free. Lastly, the enemy commander, Bilal Philips actually CALLED for state-endorsed pedophilia. So yes, this law is for the advantages of the mullah and their wicked child abusing underlings. The DRP has sold out not only the nation, religion, now they’re intent on selling out our children too.

The DRP deserves more than to be liquidated. They deserve a fate worse than death.
