Maldivian arrested in Hong Kong for murder of 64 year-old retired missionary

A 29 year-old Maldivian man identified as ‘Fareed’ has been arrested in Hong Kong for the alleged murder of a 64 year-old British woman.

The Hong Kong Standard reported that police discovered the body of Janet Gilson inside a sofa in a flat belonging to her niece, Julia Fareed, the estranged wife of the murder suspect.

The Standard reported that the suspect had a history of violence and had been banned from approaching his ex-wife following their divorce.

The South China Post reported that the couple met while she was working in the Maldives.

The suspect was arrested by police on Hong Kong pier after finding Gilson’s body during a second search of the flat after she went missing on March 15, 10 days after arriving in Hong Kong. The body was reported to have severe head injuries.

Local media in the UK reported that Gilson was a long-serving Major in the British branch of the Salvation Army, an international Christian institution with a quasi-military structure known for its charitable work and rehabilitation of alcoholics and drug addicts, and had worked for 40 years as a Christian missionary.

“She had stopped the missionary work but she was still active and in a very high position [in the Salvation Army],” Gilson’s neighbour in her home of Leigh-on-Sea told local media.

Gilson’s niece, who reportedly has a three year-old daughter, told the UK press that her murdered aunt “was like a second mother to me”.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry confirmed it had received information regarding the incident, and that the country’s embassy in Beijing was looking into the matter. No motive for the killing had been identified, the Ministry said.

  1. Shame on you Maldivian. Your dirty acts have gone beyond the borders of Maldives now. This is what happens when criminals don't get true justice. Here in maldives all these crazy drug addicts, gangs and murderers get locked up for few months or years and then get released. After they com eout, they go on continuing their dirty acts. I believe Fareed with history of criminal record is one of them. People like him should be executed, so that crimes can be stopped for once and for all.

  3. there are no animals to hunt in maldives, that maybe the reason why maldivians are are hunting and killing other human beings. Murder has become our national sport. Hope this guy is prosecuted in China, and sentenced to death. (Honkong is part of china). Like china, we are also in need of capital punishment to stop all these "game killings".

  5. Well I guess he thought, being a missionary against our religion gives him enough authority to execute her. If it were in Pakistan, he would be hailed a hero. That is what these guys see.

And of course, you all know how Maldivian murderers get punished!

Well, I say we let him be executed for this crime, in hong kong, or wherever, (not here though, our justice would not have cohones for it) if he is proven guilty.

  6. dnt blindly relate this to religion.
this guy is married to a foreign non-muslim women, divorced her and after that also visits to her (for sex??) and he is now living in Hongkong, dnt seem like the religious type to me, more like the opposite, non religious secularist sort. anyways the one who got killed is also an ex-missionary.
so, let the Honkong authorities investigate the matter.

  7. No one is guilty until proven guilty. How about contemplating a scenario that he is innocent and trapped in a murder case? Looks like poor guy is victim of a conspiracy theory. The question is will he get fair trial in China??

  8. Alhamdhulillah, i hope this time Fareed shall not be given to the Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed so that he shall be eligible for what he did - capital punishment

  9. This a small scale result of numerous HATE MONGERING amongst Muslims towards non-Muslims.

We Maldivians should ought to learn to respect non-Muslims while we think, talk, write, comment and give public speeches. Otherwise, some of us, like Fareed, would go Phsyco and kill other human beings. Who knows that if this lady wasn't murdered she might have converted to Islam before her days are over.

My fellow Maldivians, be tolerant towards other people's beliefs, like our Prophet Mohamed (SAW) did. Mohamed (SAW) didn't kill the disbelievers in Islam. In fact when Gabriel (the powerful angle) approached and asked Mohamed (SAW) that if he wished he (Gabriel) could crumble one of the nearby mountains onto the heads of the non-Muslim Arabs. But Mohamed (SAW) refused.

So I ask all Maldivians that tricky politicians in the history of the Maldives have been misusing and taking advantages to 'eat-up' your brains by bringing mentioning religion in places where it's totally irrelevant.

The belief in God (Allah) is ONLY between you and Him. The prayers and other rituals too.

But the good sayings and the good deeds you do amongst other human beings are more than between you and God (Allah). Because God has made up this universe (including this earth and its people) so that things are depending on each other. If a smart guy (a physco) destroy the moon by blowing it up, the earth will go off from its orbit and may hit the sun with us all human beings. That means even people who're not involved in the stupid act are 'punished'. The same goes when a stupid physco kills someone or blows up a place, many others are inflicted by the result.

PLS, MALDIVIANS, STOP HARE MONGERING and MISUSING the name ISLAM when actually everyone of us is not regularly praying (or maybe praying and doing some other Haram things). How can you keep callings others infidels when you're NOT PROPERLY following ISLAM?

I'm from Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong belongs to China, we have our own laws which is totally different from China. There is no death penalty in Hong Kong. As the murder was happened in Hong Kong, the suspect will get the fair trail in Hong Kong.

  16. I think this is a time that is easier for us to understand the seriousness of the ongoing Murder incidents that the country's Enforcement agencies (Police or AG Office or Criminal Court or Penitentiary) must be responsible for.

If this guy returns here under the criminal exchange program, this guy will also be released to our society and that he will get another chance to become a murder suspect. Now here we saw a Murder suspect's release to the society and he got another chance to become a Murder suspect and now i heard the Police is searching for him. We don't know how many times this guy gets such chances before Police is able to locate the guy...Sad story isn't it????

  17. They think that, because inside the Maldives, you don't get punished for going on a killing spree....that you can do the same else where? I hope he get's the death penalty if he's found guilty of murder.

And what the hell is Shiru on about? What has this murder...got to do with Zakir Naik and music shows? You delusional bro?

  20. Look at all you guys talking like this guy is already guilty of the crime. Read the article properly once more. It has the words SUSPECT and INVESTIGATION. Take a breather and let the cops and courts finish their work before you start blaming religion or maldivian culture.

  21. All the worlds pronlems are caused by religion. If an individual has a need for spiritual belief im ok with that, its when they have the urge to make every single person on earth follow the same views, thats when things get messed up.

Freedom of religion in Maldives NOW!!

  22. Whatever happens, we all understand and agree that the punishment that the overseas authorities will give this criminal will be just compared to the embarrassing judges we have in Maldives who just loves freeing criminals.

Maldives government better not try to save this guy with such a violent history and now killing his own wife! Foreigners should also be careful of people who they marry when they come to Maldives just like Maldivian girls should be careful of foreign men. Especially ones with a violent history or an anger issue.

Silly guy went of and married a christian missionary. No wonder your life never got better. Obviously her prayers didn't help you and you did the worst thing by killing her when you could just have left her. Now who can save you other than God? Repent so that your punishment is in this life with the will of God.

  24. Muad MZ--

you obvoiusly cannot comprehend what you read.

he is not SUSPECTED of killing his wife. his wife (or ex-wife as some are reporting) is not a christian missonary. the woman murdered is the aunt of his wife (or ex-wife as some are reporting).

shouldnt all people be aware and careful of people in general that have a violent and/or angry past.

i now understand how facts are lost and rumours begin.

  25. Do any of you actually read other peopls's comments? Tracy Ng has the correct information.

ALSO Lamma Island is a very small and tightly-knit community that it is difficult to keep secrets hence people believe him to the murderer.

This has NOTHING to do with religion and more to do with relationships.

ALSO Hong Kong's judicial system is separate from China and EVERYONE gets a fair hearing.

  26. I have been reading all these comments and quite frankly appaulled by the way that people think he is innocent. I know the lady he killed and she did not deserve this as she was only trying to help he neice because he was being violent towards his ex wife and causing major problems. Janet (the murdered woman) has served in countries all over the world and no one has ever tried to kill her. She was a very strong, kind caring and compassionate woman who did not deserve this especially to be stuffed in a couch. What type of animals are you if you can support this type of crime. have to admit now that i would not want to goto the Maldives or Hong kong as this is the type of behaviour you allow.

  27. this has NOTHING to do with religion at ALL and absolutely nothing to do with ALLAH! Why do muslims automatically think that anything that happens is against Allah... I mean who the hell cares, pray, don't, meditate, contact spirits, believe in the tooth fairy but DON'T push it down peoples throats, most westerners DO NOT CARE ABOUT ALLAH, or anyone elses religion, keep it to yourself. I knew Janet Gilson and she was a lovely, caring religious woman who did not deserve to have her head caved in.....period!

  28. we should check reeko moosa phone call records and see if humam made a trip to hong kong during that time. i suspect they have something to do with this...

  29. Although I am not Muslim, why is everybody bringing up the suspect's religious belief? Why can't it be... He has a criminal record, and he murdered the poor victim. All this relating to being Muslim blah blah blah is kind of like relating Maldivians to terrorist from Iraq?! That's absurd.

Muslims or non-Muslims, how many murders are committed everyday in the US? Are you telling me 90% of these crimes involved those of the Islamic faith?
