Police are investigating allegations that a female member of staff at the Shangri-La Vilingilli resort in Addu Atoll was sexually assaulted by a colleague.
The Maldives Police Service confirmed to Minivan News that it was investigating a complaint from a young woman working at the resort that she had been sexually assaulted by a co-worker. Police added that no one has been held or arrested at present over the allegations.
Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam said that according to the investigation, the alleged victim, who worked at a bar on the resort, had reported feeling unwell after drinking an alcoholic drink and was helped to her room by another member of staff.
According to police, upon being returned to her room, the alleged victim claimed that she had not been unaware of any assault upon herself.
However, Shiyam said that other sources had later come forward to claim that some sexual activity was believed to have occurred in the room involving the alleged victim.
“She doesn’t have any recollection and wasn’t aware of any sexual assault occurring, although someone in the room said they had witnessed something happening,” he added.
After raising the issue with resort management, the girl was taken to hospital, though police claimed that no injuries or indication of a possible sexual assault had been found so far.
“We have not arrested any one so far [in relation to the investigations] and the victim does not appear to have been injured,” he said. “We sent one officer to the resort and he couldn’t find any evidence related to the complaint made to police.”
Earlier this morning, a spokesperson for Hithadhoo Police Station also confirmed that an alleged sexual assault at the Shangri-La resort was under investigation.
Management at Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa confirmed the investigation was taking place. Resort General Manager Jens Moesker told Minivan News that a male member of staff had been questioned by police over his suspected involvement in the alleged assault, believed to have taken place on Saturday night (May 7).
Moesker claimed that the ongoing police investigation was being viewed as an isolated incident. He added that the company would wait for authorities to conclude their work before considering any operational changes for staff at the site.
“We need to wait for the outcome of the investigation before making any decisions on possible changes at the site,” he said. “If the [police] investigation highlights the need for any reviews of our systems we would certainly do this.”
Is this news?
Honestly, really? Is this news? Minivan News, you really need to have better judgement when it comes to seeing what is news worthy. What exactly is the point of this? What is the story here? that the girl drank alcohol? that somebody tried to assault her but she was unaware and could not recollect what happened? and there was someone else watching all this happening? So who complained? the girl? For God's sake really!!!

Let me tell you why this is news!!
Sexual harassment are often never taken seriously in this country! it happens almost everyday. I was pleased that someone came forward and reported this incident and its NEWS at the same time. I believe these type of articles will empower women who are often victims of sexual harassment to come forward and report incidents like this sort. In the last decade or so these type of harassment are being frowned upon ( which is an upgrade when it comes to our society). But harassment of this type being reported and investigated and now on news too is a complete advancement to our society and hopefully will keep perverts at bay! This comment is to everyone our there who was ever sexually harassed at any point in their lives.
@ dhon kamana (shazu) this is no news. first teach your self what is Islam and what is news.
The Maldives attracts employees from overseas, most of whom do not practice Islam. It is the responsibility of the employers to help educate the ignorant of the equality of the sexes and discipline wrong doers in the most appropriate manner. Sexual assault occurs on a daily basis in the Maldives - just speak to some of the women who are not afraid to have a voice. Some cases are severe and the perpetrators should be treated severely. Any employer who fails in their duty of care to its staff is as guilty as the alleged sex offender.
@Kummar Goar, what's the relation with your request that dhonkama teach herself Islam?
aisha & rocket
if this is news what is news for you??
sexual harassment is most barbaric and inhuman thing that is prevalent in Maldivian society but still not considered a serious crime!! in civilized societies even long gazes and long staring is sexual harassment which is prosecutable in court of laws. the thing highlights that the Maldivians need to be educated so that they can be enlightened out of their primitive and cave style mentality.
If the girl happens to be a 100% Muslim Maldivian from Addu, and if she was drunk (alcohol) of course and if she was gang raped by her collegues (white foriegners), and if some maldivian staff peeping into the guest rooms, encountered the happening, then its not only news, bit real Minivannews dho....
@Kummar Goar..
What is islam and what is news? You tell me.. This has nothing to do with religion. If you think it is then which book or hadhees says that it is ok to sexually harass women? Go teach yourself some morals and values.. If you dont know how.. I can refer you some very good books and websites
And who is shazu??
I fully agree with addu kalo, Maldivians should come out of their stone age living, the next is not only females even goats are not spared in Maldives. So please do not talk about relegion and values.
